Oil/ Filter choices for 2016 w/ 6.4 ?

Post by JD 500 » Wed Jan 04, 2017 6:20 pm

So while at the stealership, I asked about oil and filter and was told the only oil OK for these 6.4's was the Mopar oil available only at the stealership.

Doesn't even sound right.

Went to auto part store, and the only oil they said they had said "Euro turbo engines" :wtf:

Surely there's an Amsoil that's better than stock ?

Thanks,

The price of amsoil fluctuates with the trade value of gold. The stuff is pricey. A full swap in a vehicle is expensive, their gear oil is crazy money. It really makes you consider if it is what you need. With their eA filters you can go for that 25,000 mile oil change if you want, although I don't think I would take it that far. You can get oil samples as your though and see what you really can safely do to your truck though. Maybe you can do 25,000 safely? Then amsoil becomes very cost and time effective.

Amsoil oil and filter...buy multiple engine and diff oil changes per order to offset club membership.

I went with amsoil as well. I just had a buddy who has an auto garage get it for me. I think it was up around $90 with the filter and oil, but cant really remember the exact number.

I will say that after switching from the factory oil to amsoil, the motor seemed to quiet down, especially on a initial startups.

That's a winner cause my truck is a clickin away when it starts, not for long , but noticeable for sure at startup.

Nice truck.I just got the same down to the color.

I just switched my engine oil to amsoil over the weekend. I used 5W-30 XL, not signature, but there was a huge improvement in the time it takes for oil pressure to rise. I had pennzoil 5W-20 in before and already thought the time to pressure was really good.

I'm not a fan of Amsoil (just due to the pyramid scheme, sure the product is fine.)

I have been running Mobil 1 0W40 "Euro" full synthetic and their filter. good price, readily available, meets all the mopar specs. Many cars spec only Mobil 1, am confident this should be fine. I ran 5W30 Mobil 1in my Vortec 8100 for 200k miles and it was running like new when I sold it. It got abused a lot more than the PW too. My wifes car gets Mobil 1 too (factory spec) but only has 62k and really isn't beat on so nothing to say it's better.

Most oil threads turn into giant rabbit holes as they are highly preference. If you can buy the correct grade, I would bet the difference after that is miniscule,

Does amsoil still have it's pyramid scheme? I usually just order it directly from the site these days.

I like Amsoil and PureOne Gold filters. Dunno why, just do. I was running Royal Purple in the 5.7 Hemi. I just felt like treating the PW with white gloves. We'll see how long that lasts.

I could be wrong. I was turned off a long time ago, never came back around, I am all for any synthetic quality oil (Amsoil, Royal Purple, Penzoil, Mobil 1etc.)

Not meant to argue, just know most shops only carry Mobil 1, don't feel obligated to go to the dealer.

My dealer sells cases of the 0-40 Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. I don't think they even stock it in the Mopar bottles. I put a Mobil 1 extended something or other filter on it this time.

I run amsoil signature 0w-40 and either amsoil or mobil1 (champion) filters. I run a 12-15k interval. It's actually cheaper than a dealer or quickee if you use their preferred customer discount. If I recall only Pennzoil Platinum and amsoil signature 0-40 are spec'd for the new 6.4 hemi.

My dealership also skips the Mopar bottle and just sells Penzoil. I can't remember what their price is, but I get a better deal online. I buy it a couple cases at a time on Amazon.

The AMSOIL Signature Series 0W-40 meets the Chrysler MS-12633 standard. Amsoil specifically notes this in the small print of the literature. It appears the AMSOIL Europenan Car Formula (someone posted about above) does NOT meet that criteria. So only the Signature Series AMSOIL 0W-40 apparently should be used....of course there are other brands as well.

I just use Fluid Film and Wix filters in my engine. I have the 5.7 though, not sure if the 6.4 is picky...

Just fill it until it reaches the top of the dip stick tube and then dump the rest down the side of the truck, right? Was it the three or four gallon jug? I always forget which.

I like that on cold mornings some of it slips past the rings and comes out with the water vapor. Keeps the bed nice and lubed up. Tailgate never squeaks now.

Well it says it right on their site:

"Powerful corrosion protection for all metals
and superior lubrication for all moving parts"

And since TwinStick and Olyelr seem to love the stuff, I thought I'd give it a whirl. So the last oil change I had, I ordered up 7 quarts of Fluid Film. They said they don't make filters so I had to buy a Wix one though, hopefully they get into that business soon. I was a little skeptical at first, because each quart probably took about 25 minutes to empty from the bottle into the filler neck on the crankcase, but I was changing my trans fluid at the same time so I had time. When j fired her up the stuff must have really been working! It coughed, choked, smoked and stuttered, I think it was getting all the rust, rain and road salt out of the inside of the engine Image   it's still fixing my engine up because it smokes every morning, but boy does she run good now!

Fluid Film. Great stuff!
