305-70-17 vs 285-75-17, help me chose (Toyo AT2)

Post by 08TwinStickPW » Thu Jun 30, 2016 4:23 pm

I am done with the trail grapplers and the noise/harsh ride.

Love the 295/70/17 width and square shoulder, AT2's are not avail. in this size.

Killer deal right now on treaddepot
305's are 33.9 x 12.2 -- $858 shipped
285's a 33.9 x 11.3 -- $850 shipped
Both are ok for the stock 8" rims.

I really like the width on the bigger tire and added contact patch how ever I am wondering how much that would impact MPG's and winter time snow.

FWIW I hated the stock AT's in the snow, though they were garbage and feel the nitto were drastically better if that means anything.

**EDIT, tires came in, went with 305-70-17, quick pic next to half worn 295-70 nitto trail grapplers still on the truck.
The online pictures do these tires no justice at all, I just hope they are not mud bogger loud like the TG's are now.

I know the 4th Gen is different from the 3rd Gen Power Wagon, but on my 2012 I went with the 285/75 Toyo A/T II's because I wanted to make sure I had room for snow chains. I've been really happy with the tires so far. Winter last year wasn't real extreme, so I didn't have the truck in real deep snow, but they did pretty good. I also had them siped, and that seems to help with the ice.

I just suggested the 285/75s for a bit less rolling resistance. Either size will do you well. If you went to 315/70 you would be closer to a 35 but I never seen a reason to do. 305. 1cm difference? You wouldn't notice

I debated on the 285-75's, I just not a pizza cutter guy.

They would be better for less resistance and better in the snow how ever I only have 43K on the truck. That being said most of my driving is around town so neither the added width or the rolling resistance should be a big impact, both sizes weight less and should roll along a bit better than the nittos on it now.

FWIW anyone looking at these in this size or currently running them I e-mail Toyo for what PSI to run and they said to run the Front@45psi and the Rear@40/55(un-loaded/loaded).

I will have them installed this month along with new BJ's and Universals. Should be a different and tighter truck after that lol.

Not at all, I would have loved 35's however there were a couple of things holding me back.

They were $132 more for (4) to only gain .5" in height and .25 wider I don't see the need to pay that much more and possible have rub issues.

Also the min. rim width for 35's is 8.5", we only have 8". I know many are running 35's with no issue on the stock rims I just didn't want to deal with running the tire on a non approved rim width.

I personally think the perfect size for the PW is the 295-70-17 (33x12) however I could not get that size so I went up one.
