Red Neck Bed slide is done !!!

Post by TwinStick » Sun Oct 11, 2015 2:05 pm

I think it came out awesome. Enough "sticksion" so it won't slide out on it's own, but give it a good tug & it comes right out. Yes, it does slide all the way out. The back bottom part is secured to the bed tie downs with 2 turnbuckles, so it won't tip very far at all...if it ever does.

Image

^^^^^^^The posts on the tailgate are adjustable supports i made, if i ever have it all the way out with lots of weight in it. PVC pipe & end cap & oak closet rod. The brackets to hold them are right in front of the bottom caster wheels. I have not decided if i want to put stops on the slide yet. Sure is easy to remove it now if i have to.

I still gotta put some kind of finish on the wood. Any recommendations ???

Looks good. For the wood. Tong oil or a polyurethane finish.

Tung oil is easy to apply and to refresh but not too tough. Polyurethane (whether solvent or water based) is tough but very difficult to recoat when it gets worn or scratched. Proper recoat requires sanding or scuffing the whole thing, and that stuff is hard so sanding is an effort. Boat bottom paint might be a good choice if you want color. If you like the wood look, best compromise is probably a solvent-based spar varnish (not the polyurethane that masquerades as spar var in some markets, and not the low-VOC crap that they make us use in California.) Another choice would be a roll-on bed liner, like the Rust-O-Leum that Walmart sells in gallons. I used that a few years ago on an old diamond plate tool box that was bolted into a duck blind, and it held up just fine. You might want a rubber mat or a piece of thin carpet on the tray, depending on what you are hauling.

I was going to suggest the bed liner. This will depend on the clearance between parts of your system. We use a bedliner-type product on the cabinetry in the back of fire command SUVs that I sell. It is the most popular choice, by far. The right product will hold up well to the potential abuse the back of a truck may see.

Well, I like the look of wood, so I'm thinking spar. I am also thinking of a light colored carpet, so it is easier for my old eyes to see things that are in there. Thanks for the suggestions & compliments. I gotta do this before i can bolt the ARB fridge tiedowns in. Winter is coming soon. I will have this done by next spring/summer, I hope. Life just throws you a curve sometimes. Rusty knows that all too well.

Friday, GOD reached down from heaven & bitched slapped us hard. Wife has been having headaches. Got an MRI/catscan & found out she has an aneurysm on the very top of her brain stem, smack dab in the middle if everything. Making a appt tomorrow with a neurologist. See what options, if any, that we have.

So, trying not to think about the bad shit right now (didn't really work though), I bought a gal of his: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Minwax-1-gal ... /100632309 . Seems to be really good stuff. 2 coats made it look real purty & shiny.

Thanks. Prayers welcomed & needed.

^^ that's good stuff. It might take a week or so to fully cure and will be softer than say a good floor type poly but will stand up to UV and moisture.

05:00 Tuesday morning. Took all this time just for our insurance to pre-approve first procedure. Yet, at work everyday, they send the worst people on the planet to the outside hosp for a stomach ache !!! 3-4 weeks recovery time for her, then they will look into doing the 2nd one. They are thinking a clamp & then coil for this one (on top of brain stem).......& if you can believe it, done through the artery in her leg !!! Technology is a gooooooooooood thing in this case. Odds are strongly in her favor. Surgeon said 3% chance of death & 6% chance of being a vegetable permanently. Probably for legal reasons.

Prayers needed.

Thanks

Mike & Becky

I was starting to worry. No up-date. I know how you feel about the insurance. I had a good plan at work, until obamacare screwed it. With what you said. Sounds like your wife will have minimum down time. How you holding up?
