14-15 rear coils
14-15 rear coils
does anyone know if the rear coils springs of the power wagon and the normal Ram 2500 are the same length? is the power wagon lifted with longer springs or spacers from the factory? reason i ask is i am wondering how feasible it is to swap in 2500 rear coil springs to increase load capacity in a 15 power wagon (of course the sticker post weight wont change). i know it wont flex as good, but there are some after market springs for the 2500 out there from Carli that fall halfway between the power wagon and 2500 for stiffness, and 1" longer than stock 2500 according to Carli.
OR, anyone know of stiffer power wagon length coils, dont seem to be anything available that i can find, only 2500 stuff

Re: 14-15 rear coils
I have a buddy with a 2014 2500 and I helped him take his coils right out and swap in an aftermarket rear air suspension. He really didn't like the ride of the coils. If I remember right the PW springs are a little longer as I don't recall seeing any spacer in my truck vs his. When he had to drive my truck once he called it a "Cadillac" compared to his.coguzzi wrote:does anyone know if the rear coils springs of the power wagon and the normal Ram 2500 are the same length? is the power wagon lifted with longer springs or spacers from the factory? reason i ask is i am wondering how feasible it is to swap in 2500 rear coil springs to increase load capacity in a 15 power wagon (of course the sticker post weight wont change). i know it wont flex as good, but there are some after market springs for the 2500 out there from Carli that fall halfway between the power wagon and 2500 for stiffness, and 1" longer than stock 2500 according to Carli.

I have the Air Lift Loadlifter 5000 airbags with the Daystar cradles and would do the air bags any time vs swapping in regular coils. Our trucks ride so good from the factory I wouldn't want to lose that.
However if you plan on having your truck loaded with a lot of payload almost all the time then heavier coils might be the best option.
Loving my 3/4 ton version of my old Jeep TJ!!!!!

What he said.
If you just load it down once in a while, I would recommend just adding airbags.

Re: 14-15 rear coils
I believe I read somewhere the front is 2" higher and the rear is 1" higher. The main difference was the regular 2500 has progressive rate coils, the power wagon does not, I can confirm my regular 2500 does not Flex worth anything.
Re: 14-15 rear coils
it would have close to 1300lbs in the bed 90% of the time (four wheel camper pop up slide in). i havent bought a truck yet, trying to decide between power wagon and normal 2500, but i do hit the trails in CO with the camper in. i would love to keep it "all spring" to handle the weight, but air bags have benefits to (adjust side to side loads)

Re: 14-15 rear coils
I would still get the power wagon.. just cause. If the springs don't work well enough for you and you don't want bags, simply stick the normal 2500 springs in there and add correct size spacers to get it sitting up level.

Re: 14-15 rear coils
The Spring Constant (or rate), 'k' in N/m, is different for the coils on a std 2500 Vs the PW. Spring rate is found from Hooke's law: F=k*x, where F is the load applied to the spring, k is the spring rate, x is the linear elongation or compression. PW 2500's have a linear or constant value of 'k', which means the coil maintains constant material properties, constant inner diameter, constant wire diameter. The standard 2500 has a progressive variable rate of 'k', which means the amount of force required to compress the spring a fixed distance varies as the amount of total compression changes through the cycle driven by changes in material properties & geometry along the linear length of the spring.

Re: 14-15 rear coils
Isn't that backwards? The pw should be the one with constant coils and the regular 2500 should be the one with progressive rate coils.adeluca73 wrote:The Spring Constant (or rate), 'k' in N/m, is different for the coils on a std 2500 Vs the PW. Re: 14-15 rear coils
Power wagon has a single rate coil. Let's stop F=x?!!! Around here. Lol! !!

I have an '05 that I use with a Grandby camper. While suspension is different It would probably ride better with something in between stock PW and stock 2500. Just a little bit too much sway with stock at times. Drops rear about 1 1/2" when loaded. Best bet is to get and try stock for a while and see how it feels. Then decide air bags vs. springs. I have tried Super Springs. Feels better with camper on and too stiff when off.
Re: 14-15 rear coils
thats good to hear flattire, almost apples to apples. i have a hawk (6.5') camper, and you have the granby (8') camper. do you have a single cab long bed, or just let it hang out of the back of the short bed? i used to work for four wheel camper, know the models well. i also see your generation PW has a slightly higher payload than the 10-13 or 14-15.
I'm still really leaning towards the 15 power wagon though, knowing air bags will probably be required and see how it goes with coils after that. 2500 capacity sounds nice, but dont sound like they flex much at all, and CO trails can use some flex for sure
