Tow Hook Replacement For 3G
Finally got myself stuck last weekend and realized that my big ARB jerk strap won't fit onto the PW's factory tow hooks. So, anybody have a recommendation for a pair of HD shackle brackets that will fit the factory bolt holes? Clearance is an issue because I have a light bar that is pretty close to the factory tow hooks.

Re: Tow Hook Replacement For 3G
Can fit a shackle, but would rather have mounts that I can just leave the shackles on. If I hang the shackles on the factory hooks, it will look tacky and they will rattle all the time. If the shackles are already mounted, it will save a lot of time and grief. Truck was buried in deep sand, and of course, all the recovery gear was packed such that a lot of other stuff had to be unpacked and piled in the sand to get to the recovery stuff. Would like to speed up the recovery process by having the right stuff readily accessible. And I agree that this is a stupid stuck. I got overconfident about the PW's capabilities and tried to take a shortcut through the desert near Yuma. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

At least it's not snow! I buried my 2004 past the axels a few years back. That was an adventure (and about a $300 tow bill).

$95 a pair, or just have some made.
I use a clevis/shackle on my tow hooks & put the PIN through the hook. It has worked many a times. If you want straight up clevis mounts, custom is the way. Make SURE the welds are deep enough & strong enough.
Could also call bubba rope & ask if they will do a custom short piece, then you could get 2 & go from both tow hooks to a large clevis.

Happens quick too. Heavy trucks find the bottom fast.
I run the pin thru the hook too. It only takes a few seconds to do even with the RED Inc. light bar. The pin goes in from the bottom very easily.

Throw on a ball to easliy move trailers around, vise and/or work station, couple seats for a football game (start a new trend like bumperin instead of tailgating).

I' m use to having a few trees around to winch from. Have you ever considered buying one of those land anchors that you wedge into the sand to create a winch point? Not sure how well they work.
I like the idea of the square receivers! Factor 55 has a hitch Link that would slide right in there.

Re: Tow Hook Replacement For 3G
PulPal is the only land anchor that works.
The only concern I'd have with the receiver is the side load with that extra length. That can be decreased with a bridle type of hookup.

Re: Tow Hook Replacement For 3G
That's what I'm doing. Got to do it again this weekend when a friend's Toyota got stuck on what passed for a road near Yuma.I run the pin thru the hook too. It only takes a few seconds to do even with the RED Inc. light bar. The pin goes in from the bottom very easily.
Those extenders don't really solve my problem, because there is still not enough space in the factory hooks to slip in anything other than a 2" jerk strap. 3" and 4" are not even close to fitting, so I have to use shackles. Would still like to find a set of mounts that will put sturdy shackles in place of the factory hooks. Thanks for the leads.

Re: Tow Hook Replacement For 3G
Just learned the hard way that ARB's straps bleed like a can of paint when they get wet. One of mine got dragged through a field of damp manure during the Toyota recovery this weekend. The stink was amazing so when I got home I washed it pretty thoroughly with a hose and hung it to dry. Still pretty wet this morning so I had the bright idea to tumble dry it on low so that I could repack it in the truck. Damned thing turned the inside of the dryer bright orange and now I'm into my second hour of cleaning the dryer before my wife sees it. Word to the wise.

No need to replace the tow hooks, put a D shackle on the tow hook than attach the snatch strap to the D shackle done it many times...Ducky's Dad wrote:Finally got myself stuck last weekend and realized that my big ARB jerk strap won't fit onto the PW's factory tow hooks. Re: Tow Hook Replacement For 3G
I think he meant put a shackle on the tow hook like someome else suggested, but you don't want that because they will vibrate and constantly be clanking around and be annoying.

Well you can't run around with the strap on so why not take the shackle off after use? I don't see the issue at all. Strap thru shackle, shackle thru recovery point.

Re: Tow Hook Replacement For 3G
The issue for me is that my truck is too small for all the crap I have to carry when we go hunting and my truck is the mother ship for a group of guys. Mother ship includes being the recovery vehicle for the Fords and Toyotas, so I'd like to have my shackles premounted on the front so that I don't have to dig them out of the bottom of the tool box at the front of the bed when the rest of the bed is packed full of other stuff and there is more stuff on top of the tool box. The more gear that I can have premounted and ready to deploy, the quicker and simpler the recoveries are. When the truck is fully packed and loaded, it can take 15 minutes to unpack enough stuff to get to the shackles, and then everything has to be repacked after the recovery. I don't want the shackles premounted on the factory tow hooks because they will rattle and beat things up, including my light bar and the lower chrome part of the bumper.I don't see the issue at all.

Re: Tow Hook Replacement For 3G
Most of my heavy gear (like the 14K PulPal, HiLift, bottle jack, etc.) is stored in a similar fashion - it takes a bit to get to it.
I have made up a gear bag of essentials for easy recoveries; snatch strap, a few shackles, 2 pulley blocks, and a couple tree savers, and a 50' 3/8" extension. If I need more than that, it's gonna take some thought and rigging, so the unpacking is secondary as it were...
Perhaps that's an option for you as well - just a few of the essentials kept readily at hand would make life easier.

Re: Tow Hook Replacement For 3G
That would work if the truck had a longer bed, but I'm using all the space I have for ice chests, ammo cans, decoys, waders, etc. Almost all of the recovery gear is in a cross-bed tool box at the front of the shell, and I have laid out the bed to accommodate the stuff I use or access most frequently. I had the gun drawer custom fabbed out of stainless steel and aluminum diamond plate so that I could slide in a series of hard containers between the drawer and the fender well, with little to no wasted space and no sliding around when the stuff is in place, so there really is no good place to stow recovery gear other than the tool box. There is a lot of gear in there including four snatch and tow straps, a big tree protector, tow-truck grade jumpers, winch extension, shackles and pulleys, rope, Hi-Lift accessories and bases, ARB X-Jack, full size shovel and hoe, ground tarps, fairly complete set of SAE and metric tools, tire patch kit, flares, inflator cans, air hose for the on-board air, a backup ViaAir compressor with its own hose, a few spares, gloves, jackets, etc. That load of stuff barely fits and it's packed like a jigsaw puzzle. Fortunately, the recovery gear does not get used very often so it goes in the place that is most inconvenient to access. I think I need a bigger truck.Perhaps that's an option for you as well - just a few of the essentials kept readily at hand would make life easier.
