New DD/project.

Post by SilverWagon05 » Sun Aug 10, 2014 8:04 am

With my recent move, my daily commute has increased substantially, which started to get very expensive, not to mention being very sad to see my off-road beast turning in to a pavement princess. I decided to pick me up a new daily driver/project......and here it is!

Put it to work the very first day I had it.

I'm now getting a little over 30mpg and having a blast doing it. I had one of these as my first vehicle back in high school and always kicked myself for ever getting rid of it. I had been looking around for another one for a few years now and just couldn't find one in any kind of decent shape or price. Then about a month ago, this one just fell right in to my lap. It's an '88 with 50k original miles and is in excellent condition. Being that it is my daily driver, it is going to be a very slow build and I'm not going crazy with it...yet. I'm not blasting through traffic with it, but it does pretty much keep up. The best part of all is I've now been able to teach my boys how to drive a manual. They love driving this thing out in the hills.

I looked for one about 15 years ago here in So Cal when I thought it would be good for hunting in tight areas where the full size trucks just couldn't go. Even back then there were none available at sensible prices because they were a bit of a cult item. So I quit looking.

That reminds me of a time we were wheeling back in some sand pits and a fella had one. His tie rod broke, we tied it up really good with mule tape and he went another two hours. Then he turned the wrong way and went too deep in a water hole and locked it. I pulled him back to his house about 4 miles away with my four wheeler. He took the plugs out, put some diesel in the crank case and turned it over a few times for about 20 seconds at a time. Drained the oil, filled it back up, plugs back in and fired it off. By the next weekend, he was back in action. Ha ha

I only do what the majority of the 4 voices in my head tell me to. In most cases, I ignore two of them because one doesn't speak English, and I suspect the other is talking to someone else.

Very nice! Need to do a 1.6 swap. My Dad did it to his Suzi! Big difference on power.

I initially started looking for one a few years back for the same reason. Hunting and trail riding. The whole family fits in it and it still has tighter dimensions than a RZR4!

That would definitely be nice. Going to hold off on major projects for a while though. For now, I have a few small maintenance issues to address and some minimal upgrades. I do have some crazy ideas swimming around though  I just can't leave things alone :excited:

You might want to check out one of my old crawlin' acquaintances from back in the 1999 2006 time frame. Chris built some wicked wheelers. I still know a few of the BTG crew.

x2! I remember rolling one of those multiple times... not as much fun as I had expected. The good news is that it was caged and we knew we were going to roll. It's still not a fun thing to get tossed around in since I could almost reach any part of it from the passenger seat!
