Water Crossing

How many of you have done a water crossing in your wagon? How deep have you gone? And by water crossing, I don't mean a wet driveway after you have washed your truck

I did in my '09, it was a mud hole covered in about a foot of water that I had gone through in my stock Tacoma before. I locked both axles and dove in... I wasn't expecting the traction to be so good and I ended up pushing up a wall of water and it got to the point that it was coming up over the hood then BAM! Hydro locked the engine with 3,700 miles on the truck

... my insurance covered the engine replacement luckily. It snapped a con rod bent another cracked one of the heads and turned one of the pistons into pixie dust. Buy a snorkel and extend your breather lines.

I have all my breathers up to the bottom of the windshield/top of the bed level. I have a custom intake that should work much better than the stocker (since there is no 4g snorkels). Not saying I am brave enough to go through enough water, or mud (heavy truck + non-mud tires = bad day), to need any of this. I was just curious what the PW has been capable of.

That's a real bummer about the hydrolock. You wouldn't happen to have a video on youtube of this happening would you? I only ask because of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOmMTKfq80M

Nope that wasnt me, theres another guy on youtube from canada destroying his motor the same way, again not me. Mine was in a bit deeper hole and I aproached slowly once in I floored it and accelerated pretty good to the point it pushed the water up and in, so needless to say lockers are dangerous. This is the only photo I have of the incident and you cant see the 50' of mud hole i made it through before the water killed it. I opened the doors and my carpet was dry (barely). For refrence it was bone stock except stock size BFG KM2 tires. I now have a 2013 and cant wait for someone to offer a 4G snorkle.

I got my truck stuck in the Pecos river. That's the incident that prompted me to install a snorkel. Of course no pics though. I was too stressed to take any.

How deep was the water ? My big concern would be getting the interior wet. If you didn't get it all dried out then mold could grow.

I've gone through water up to the floor boards many times in my stock '10. Had the cooling fan blades hitting the water, had an empty cooler floating in the bed, the only issue I've had is the exhaust manifold bolts cracked since the water was close to freezing.

Don't our owners manuals state 24" at 5 mph? The key is slow speed and avoid the wave from the bumper...

Yeah. I was typing that last night but was too lazy to go outside and grab the manyal to verify. Didn't want to mislead anyone. But now that you say it too, I'll agree!

Slow and steady. And of course avoid the invisible 4 ft deep holes at the bottom of the 2 ft puddle...

There's an access panel in the upper portion of the fender well that if you open it about 2 freaking times it breaks off. Then you have a nice size hole about 2.5"x6" than is directly below the air intake and a direct route for the tires to throw water into the intake... If you take the bottom of the intake filter box out, you can look straight down at the ground in front of the tire. Piss poor design...

This is why military trucks have snorkels. It would be lame to have a little water stop you in your tracks. Also the same reason I have a snorkel on my PW.

I have to agree with piss poor air box/ inner fender design (I'm a little bias), my door opened where it sat in the picture and the water didn't get into the carpet even though the door was hanging down into the water, I think if it was another inch deeper it would have got into the cab... I would say the water/mud was more than 24' but I wasn't smart enough to read the manual, or keep my truck out of that hole. I also wasn't laughing after it happened like the dude in the red hat on YouTube was, I was so pissed at myself

I could have ripped a dictionary in half. State Farm was there and the only good to come of it.

As a young lad, I played around mud and deep water with a bunch of friends, and saw so many broken trucks, that I never played in Water that was deep. I love Mud and Rocks and tight trails, but water will kill a good time and a wallet. that is why I will never buy a Snorkel, for it may lead to that. I have had my truck in water that was about knee deep, but it was very slow, and did fine. Water will find a way...always....

Very much agreed. Real PITA to clean mud off a truck too.

I remember that True (Edwin probably wants to forget it--lol). It made me very cautious around water with mine. Although it did give us an earlier start on the apres wheeling party! We should get to Bobcaygen again this year with all the guys!!!

I'm in the same boat as you. There isn't very much water that is deep enough for a truck to play in around here (other than small lakes and creeks) that would justify a snorkel. But if I did have one then everyone would be asking why I had that snorkel then I may have to go in against my will. So I'll just save my money for something else.
