gotta little problem

Post by mcdozendriver » Wed Jul 10, 2013 2:23 am

This morning I noticed few drops of oil on my driveway under my truck. When I got home this evening I crawled under and found two leaks. Both are on the passenger side of the front axle. The one causing the drips is the end of the passenger side axle. Oil has leaked down over the lower ball joint and down on to the tire. The other leak is where the passenger axle tube meets the diff housing. Its a little seepage nothing actually dripping at this time. I went on a light trail ride a week and a half ago and knocked the front diff. Would it be possible that the hit to the diff would cause failure of the seal at the end or this just happened on its own? Anyone had this happen on their truck? Calling the dealer in the morning to bring it in, hopefully the extra money I spent on the warranty pays off.

I had the same leak last fall, but on the drivers side. 100% covered under the power train warranty.

Well just heard from the dealer. Apparently the weld between the diff housing and the axle tube broke and the passenger side tube actually rotated slightly. So now they are ordering an entire new front axle assembly. Cant wait to hear the time estimate to get that delivered and installed.

I would say that definitely could be related to hitting the diff.

Even hitting the diff shouldn't cause that I don't think. (unless he was going very fast at the time, and I'd say a busted plug weld would be the least of his worries at that point!!!) I hit the diff plenty of time on my ZJ's puny dana 30 and didn't have any issues. It looks to me like a manufacturing defect.

As myoung84 stated, there sure has been a lot of leaking going on here lately! It compelled me to go out and check my front end!!!

Looks like a bad weld. Never got enough heat to the tube and diff housing to stick.

Yeah I agree that the diff hit was not the sole contributor to the break. I was going under 10mph and the rock only hit the lower lip, probably only a quarter to half inch made contact with the diff. Also the wheeling trip was almost two weeks ago and I checked the entire under body when I got home and didn't notice the damage to the weld. But I guess it's a good thing I brought it in and am getting it replaced. Just hope it doesn't take a long time to get the new axle in.

Where the tube goes into the diff housing. Alot of people will weld the tube to the diff housing there, all the way around. Thinking on doing this myself.

Well, just heard back from the dealer and they are trying to track down the components. They gave me an initial time estimate of having everything in by the end of next week. I am not holding my breath on that, but we shall see. I guess this just gives n-fab more time to ship my steps to me.

Ok now potentially bigger problem. Corporate kicked back the warranty because there are scratches on the bottom of the diff. 4.7k to replace the axle. Has anyone had to fight to get something fixed on their truck covered by warranty? The dealership management and techs don't believe the hit on the diff was significant enough to do this. Any suggestions?

You got a bad plug weld that fell out from the lack of penetration. The other plug welds on the axle tubes is now questionable too since the axle tube rotated.I would fight them. Lawyer if needed.

Typical Corporate bait & switch. If YOU do what the commercial shows, then YOU void the warranty !!! It is OK to false advertise to sell a $50,000 vehicle though.

Remember the commercials where they dropped the Dodge truck/s from about 5' high ? Yeahhh, i suspect THAT would also void the warranty as well. I say fight for it. Tell them you will make & video your own commercial & post it on youtube, telling & showing how you are getting the shaft from RAM !!! Maybe it will go viral !!!

FIGHT IT!!! Call Chrysler customer care directly, document everything, take all kinds of pictures, get second and third opinions from other mechanics. That is an absolute joke that they are trying to deny warranty! I had a 2006 Nissan Frontier NISMO and I ended up grenading the front diff while trying to get unstuck and Nissan warrantied the whole thing.

i'll be honest...unless you have money for an attorney and don't have anything else to do, you should suck it up on this and accept it for what it is. yer in for alot of headaches. it doesn't take long to go through $5,000 in legal fees.

my in-laws got 2 lemons from VW Toureg (don't ask me why they bought 2 in a row). anyway, they shelled out lots of cash and time on an attorney and won both cases...but then they had nothing better to do at the time.

however, if it's all based on principal and yer willing to shell out money for an attorney, then go for it.

Well after nearly three weeks of dealing with my dealership and Chrysler I succumbed and let the insurance cover the repairs. So the wagon is finally back with an entire new front end. Just glad I have her back.
