Split Personality Tailgate

Post by 04Ram2500Hemi » Sun Jul 14, 2019 12:18 pm

So I had a chance to see the new Ram tailgate. As per the sticker it’s a $1,000 option. I like this much better than the GMC Tailgate. I’m not sure I loved the $60,000 sticker on the new Rebel, but it was a nice truck.

There's no way twice as many parts could have twice as much wear. I don't see how this can fail.

What a stupid design. Is this for real? How would load anything into that?

Like it. So long as the sides swing far enough to not impede any loading, I think it is a winner.

Split Personality Tailgate

Post by Rodeoflyer » Sun Jul 14, 2019 1:14 pm

Ok I see...had to go watch the video. It swings down as well. I don’t know, seems like a solution that doesn’t have a problem.

It may be good for someone who needs to step up into the bed often or maybe someone with a disability.

The Lincoln version of the F-150 had this type of tailgate as well.

The honda ridgeline has had a tailgate like this for years as well.

If I didn't have the need for a swing-out bumper, I'd be interested. Not sure at that price point, but...

Barn doors. I can't see the latching mechanism, but I could see a load shifting, push open the gates, and spill out the load. I wonder what the weight rating is before the latches fail.

With as light as the tailgates are with the auto open I don't see the need for these other tailgate tricks whether Chevy Ford or Dodge.

They aren't focusing on the right things in my opinion.

A soccer mom of lazy dad could lift and manage the aluminum tailgates.

Focus on thing that make the truck better or more powerful or functional. Not a split tailgate. This is something that seems born out of the Jeep Gladiator. Another waste in the way it was executed.

GM recognized a demand for barn doors on Suburbans for many years prior to rear lift hatches. Being able to get to the actual bed surface without a gate is a plus for some folks, including those that bumper pull trailers (assuming the larger gate half will clear the tongue jack).

I have a shell on my PW and even though my fridge is on a slide, it would be nice to actually be able to pull it out and have full access to the contents. Same goes with loading gear in and out of the bed especially given how tall the bed is. Other times, the fold down gate makes a nice work surface for meal prep and other things.

Options are a good thing, and this is an additional function as you stated.

But that is just my opinion.

That'd be a big noooooooooope for me.

Get the hitch and trailer's jack far enough from the receiver that the trailer clears the tailgate. Not that big of a deal.

Great points. I often forget the myriad of ways people may use their truck in not so traditional manners.

I’d much rather this if I wanted to compromise... doors swing all the way open.

I just want removable roof panels on the front cab that I can store in a special compartment in the bed.

Oh wait maybe I also need a Jeep
