Stock 2016 Power Wagon w/ 37" Tires

Post by Reloaderguy » Fri Feb 26, 2016 11:04 pm

The other thread drifted off course so I'm putting this in a new thread.

Here is my stock 2016 Power Wagon with 37X12.50X17 Toyo RT on KMC XD128 17X9 +18mm offset. I trimmed the hump off of the fender flare, pulled out the wheel well liner and trimmed the bottom hump, and then cut 3"X.5" strip out of the pinch weld. I used a heat gun to shape the lower back of the wheel well liner. I shot the exposed metal with flat black primer and filled the gaps with black RTV. There is ZERO rub on flat ground and looks like there could be a little under full flex while turned 3/4 to lock. The truck could use another 1" to 1.5" of lift in the front but only to achieve a level stance, my driveway slopes down to the front of the truck in the picture..

Here is what the stock springs look like with the axle sitting on jack stands.

37's look awesome nice. But am I the only one seeing the coil springs really warped? Is that normal?

That's why I included the pictures. The stock coils are bowed like crazy. The truck rides pretty well though.

I've just never seen a coil that displaced especially on a new truck with new springs. You should flex one side out and see if the spring returns to a more correct line as the bottom coil bucket flattens out or if the coil bows out even more. That's weird. Part of the new fron axle control arm design. Swing arm. Probably normal. I had one Carli coil bow out like that and I got rid of it. But hey. I'm not a spring guru. But the 37s stock height look mean

Imagine what the coils will look like with a leveling spacer. If you want lift over the stock Power Wagon height you need different coils. We'll see what Thuren thinks when he gets it in a few weeks.

Thanks for posting the thread as you know I'm planning a very similar Path. My coils look like that as well definitely an OEM thing. After making the switch and having driven the truck a bit would you do it again? Keep the updates coming!

Yes, I bought this truck with the intention of putting 37's on it. My stock wheels and tires have 485 miles on them.

I noticed the same thing with my 2016 just a few days ago. I had been up on the mountain in the snow, and had been hammering my truck pretty hard trying to check out the axle wrap / hop problem. I had it hopping and shaking so hard that the front end was banging pretty loud. After I got home I was looking the truck over to see if there would be some way to easily improve the axle wrap / hop problem on the front end, and noticed how bowed my front springs were. I wondered if I had caused some misalignment from getting the truck hopping and banging so hard, but decided I hadn't, and that that was just the way the truck is built. Your pictures confirm that all of the 5th gen trucks are that way.

After looking at your pictures, it looks like the easiest way to improve the axle wrap / hop problem is to just bolt on a set of 37s. Thanks.

Wow. You see so many 4G and 5Gs with graphics and you forget how good they look in a plain wrapper. Damn nice looking truck with that wheel/tire combo.

The front coils are a little puzzling. It's difficult to believe that the suspension team didn"t see that when they redesigned the front end. Does anyone know if 2500s look like that, or is it just PWs with taller springs?

The truck does look good with the 37's, good job. Can you post a pic of what that tire/wheel combo looks like from the front or back? Do the tires stick out past the fender wells very much?

I'd like to see more pics as well from front and rear and maybe a 3/4 view from front and from rear. Thanks!

Beautiful truck!!! LOVE the blue color!!!! (what's the name of the color?) Truck looks hot with the 37s!!! That bowed coil is crazy though. But, I guess it makes sense with the geometry of the new front end???

If those pics of the coils are with the axle at ride height then that is just plain ol effed up. They really dropped the ball there. The lower perch looks to be an inch or two too far forward and about 10 degrees off horizontally from the upper perch.

It almost looks like they didnt redesign the radius arms for the added height of the Pw, although i know they are different arms.

Looking at that picture. Think that when the suspension cycles up. The spring perches might be parallel then ??????? When it goes down. Then that's another story.

Yes, exactly. Like if the axle was up another two inches (like a regular 2500) i bet the spring would be much straighter.

After reading this thread I went out and looked at my springs. Like a previous poster said the bottom of the spring perch sits forward just a hair. Thus causing the spring to have that bowed looked. It definitely does not stand straight up and down like on most vehicles. I definitely like the look of the 37's on the truck. If I didn't tow so much and have the lifetime warranty I would do it as soon as the stock tires it the dust.

You can't really see them in the pictures but the axles are fully weighted on jack stands. The truck was maybe an inch taller than when it is on the tires.

As far as I know ( I think I read it here), the radius arms have the same geometry as a regular 2500. I've never measured either though so I can't be certain. Again, the truck rides ok albeit a little stiff/tight.

I have a set of 0 offset wheels, currently have 35's on them, but would like to go to a 37. Do you think it would be more or less trimming with a 0 offset wheel as opposed to a +18?

I love that color! Looks great with the black wheels and 37's.

As for the front coils, I wouldn't worry bout' em, they should straighten out as the suspension extends or compresses. Still, rather odd, are they like this on anyone else's radius armed truck?

Depends on the width but if your wheels are 9" wide you will need to trim more for sure. Before I cut the flairs I couldn't turn the wheel without rubbing.

Maybe I will just stick with the 35's for now. I would like to use the truxxx kit, but it doesn't seem like that is a good thing with the power wagon coils.

I didn't get to read all of the replies, so ignore this if it's already been said "or if you just don't want to read what I have to say. "

First, your truck looks amazing! Seriously.

Second, the coils are definitely not good and not what I have seen as normal. It looks like the caster is pretty far out from where it should be and I think your passenger side is worse than driver side, so it could just be a simple caster change to get it lined up better. I had to go way back through my computer to try and find pictures of the stock springs, I'm still looking for those. But you might find these useful. These are on my diesel, "non-branded" 3" springs, with stock radius arms. This is bad enough that the factory radius arms just don't allow enough adjustment to get the springs straightened back up at ride height, which is why "non-branded company" came up with the adjustable arms. "Another company" has their drop brackets to fix the issue.
coilspringbow.jpg
diesel 3" coils, ride height, stock arms
Here is a link to a picture showing them at full droop. You can see how much the axle swings with radius arms from ride height to full droop, and why long arms will be so much better for those who really use their suspension often. These springs kept popping out at full droop, the back side had some weight on it but they would just hop right over that center coil mount hump and hit the floor. The angles just aren't good at all. Adjustable radius arms fix this easily, but again I would say if you wheel your truck a lot, go for long arms "from any manufacturer that makes them."

The caster is correct. I'd prefer you didn't turn my thread into a DOR sales pitch.
