Occasionally exceeding payload?

Post by MrG » Sun Oct 01, 2017 5:04 pm

So, I’m planning on purchasing a PW, and just saw the payload capacity is absurdly low. I have a 300 gallon water tank that might get carried maybe once a month for 10 miles or so. My question is, is this an issue that should worry me? Should I just abandon my PW plan?

Thats about a 1000lbs over. Frankly a lot for any truck. But once a month for ten miles? I don't see that as a huge issue, I have done so far worse I don't want to start a flame war here about how dangerous I am. Its one thing to do that, another to drive 500 miles over loaded, or drive 80 on the highway over loaded. A Tundra towed the space shuttle....only a few miles at a few miles an hour...... You figure engineering is at least 50% greater anyhow. Just take it easy on the bumps off road. I am sure there are things you could do to increase payload capacity if you had to, its only the off-road tuned springs holding you back. (different springs, air bags) Other 2500s would be all right.

You should be fine. I tow a 12000 lb mini excavator on a 2000 lb trailer from time to time without any trouble. Just take it easy and you won’t have any problems.

300 gals of water weight close to 2,500lbs. I've had 3,000 to 4,000 lbs in the back of mine a few times. But I didn't have to travel far. Only a of couple of miles.

It can handle it. Just don't drive stupid. I've put 4000lbs on the pw springs. It can do it. Sags a lot. Airbags help

Once a month warrants rear suspension help, at least in my opinion. Not sure what year your truck is but helper springs, HD coils, air bags or Timbrens would be in order. Worth their weight in gold when you need them. I have 4 leaf 1 ton Hellwig Load Pro 35's on my truck. I love em. If I had a newer truck with coil springs in the rear, I would put some reg 2500 rear coil springs in it. The lift on 3rd Gen PW's came from lift blocks in the rear, not sure about the new coil rear ends. I tow a lot with mine.

Better watch out, the payload police will get you. And if not, you'll kill yourself and a family and some puppies. Read that on the RVing forum.

I haul past published capacity at times, the difference between a wagon and regular gas 2500 is softer suspension period. A set of timbrens or air bags will make your occasional overload no problem.

Not an issue if you are careful. Get Load Range E tires if the stockers are LR-D, and don't do anything stupid. Air bags will help but are not necessary. I regularly carry 4,000 pound loads in my GMC 1/2 ton, but I have upgraded to 1-ton brakes and LR-E tires, and I am careful. The PW brakes are more than adequate.

Agreed...

But don't be fooled by load range E stamped tires. Check the actual load rating in Kg and Lbs that is stamped on the tires... I've seen load range E tires that have a lower weight capacity than load range D tires of the same size.

When you exceeding weight capacity there better be some double D's.
