Re: FilterMag questions/ found loose part in rear diff. 3400
Is he still in neutral from 4lo when he activates swaybar disco, cranks the dial to f/r lock and cranks the wheel, then throws it back into drive for 5 ft?

That's flat out BS. You do NOT have to disconnect the sway bar to get the lockers to work. And, there are times when you flat out do NOT want the front and rear locker engaged at the same time, like when your steering is critical, with trees everywhere. Sometimes you can't steer good at all with the front locked up. Mine will lock up either way, meaning, 4Lo, RR first, then turn dial again to FR/RR. Or, 4Lo, & go right to FR/RR. Either way, the rear actually locks before the front. If it don't, then the computer will NOT allow the front to lock. If it is having trouble locking up, doing a slow, partial figure 8 usually does the trick. There are names for this maneuver.JD 500 wrote:Felt like that when I was talking to the service writer.DamageWagon wrote:"Could not replicate issue. Part not necessary for operation."

Then I talked to the tech, and better yet he came out to the truck and showed me how they get the lockers to work.
So tech says those clips don't have any function because they are there to keep the wires out of the way during assembly of the rear end.
So then he climbs into the drivers seat and says the following:
4Lo
swaybar disco button
then he turns locker dial all the way to both front and rear locked without stopping at rear only.
cranks the steering wheel back and forth, drives forward 5 feet and bam, both lockers locked, took 5 seconds.
He said the instructions in manual are crap.
Known as:
The Power Wagon Shuffle
The Locker Dance
The Locker shuffle
When the sway bar is giving you issues by either not disconnecting or not reconnecting, going over a uneven surface usually does the trick, or you can get out of the truck & manually rock the front of the truck back and forth. This also has names:
The Swaybar Rock
The Swaybar Boogie
The Swaybar Dance
The Swaybar shuffle
Mine lock up in 3-5 seconds. The more you use them, the easier & faster they lock up. I found that if you have no torque/bind when trying to unlock them, they disengage VERY quickly. I just push in the clutch when driving straight & they unlock instantly. Swaybar-sometimes not-so-much, but driving over a little uneven ground always does the trick.
Re: FilterMag questions/ found loose part in rear diff. 3400
I was trying to lock diffs on pavement. I just wanted to confirm they were working. It was the first ever attempt. I got the rear to lock, but couldn't get the front to lock.
I think tech shifted to drive before the swaybar disco and lockers Rodeoflyer
The tech said this is what they found to do that worked the best. I don't think he said you had to do it that way, it's just what they've found to do that locks both lockers. I definitely know what you're talking about TwinStick as far as not locking front to be able to steer. And the tech said exactly what you did; the rear has to lock or the computer won't allow front to lock.
I specifically told tech I could not get front locker to lock. So I think that's what he was addressing.

Re: FilterMag questions/ found loose part in rear diff. 3400
Yeah, the way I do it is on a surface that the tires will slip on, like gravel, mud, wet grass. I don't want to hear a front axle u-joint pop & break. I tried to lock up once when we had the 30' toy hauler (10,500 lbs) on, in Pa. It was a gravel road up the side of a small mountain, about 1800'. They had just had some torrential rain the day before & there were 4 washouts in the road about a foot deep. It just would not lock up when the truck was under the stress/torque/weight of the camper. It turned into a whole family affair. Spotters, ground guides & stacking rocks so the camper wouldn't get the plumbing ripped off. We made it, took a while though. I was loving the ultra low gearing in my truck that day. Luckily we made it up without the lockers. It was digging in a little though. Kept turning the steering wheel back & forth so the front would kinda alternate traction from left to right & not stop completely & bury itself. Pucker factor was high that day.

"It just would not lock up"
Kind of Sh*tty that the lockers don't work when you need them.
Hardwire them, they work any time near instantly

Re: FilterMag questions/ found loose part in rear diff. 3400
I am about ready to do this. If it is fairly easy to just tap into a wire and add a switch (for each locker) I would do it. A couple discretely added switches somewhere is fine by me. But I am not good at wiring, and all the electronics in these new trucks has me flustered. Wasnt a big deal with my Jeep.trk4sale wrote: Hardwire them, they work any time near instantly
I prefer to leave the diff's unlocked and then lock them up when absolutely needed, but that can easily get you in trouble when they take a bit to lock up.

Re: FilterMag questions/ found loose part in rear diff. 3400
I heard the 2012 and older PW's have easier locking lockers and you can change the TPMS thresholds sitting in the driveway.
Re: FilterMag questions/ found loose part in rear diff. 3400
My reason for not doing this yet: I have a lifetime power train warranty. Yup, lifetime. That little gem has already saved me about $5000 in parts & labor. Any mods to the power train & they void the warranty. And trust me, after the $5000 worth of parts & work, they are looking for ANY REASON to void my warranty. They as much told me that to my face when I picked it up from that repair. Yup, dealers suck. Mine was the first Power Wagon they had to replace the rear tone ring/locker set up on & they said they do NOT want to do that again anytime soon. Since then, I have noticed no more new Power Wagons just "sitting on the lot" there either. It was a headache for them. It was on their lift for almost 4 weeks, occupying space that could be making them money. They had to send an employee to "get trained" on the PW repairs, they had to have special tools, that they did not have. Had it sent to them from another dealer somewhere because the dealer did not want to spend the $$$$ to buy one for themselves. Just a royal PITA for them and definitely for me too.

Easier lockers, I'm not sure about that but mine usually take about 5-7 seconds total for both.adeluca73 wrote:I heard the 2012 and older PW's have easier locking lockers and you can change the TPMS thresholds sitting in the driveway.
TPMS threshold is super easy to do with an air compressor and a beer. I would quote more beers for the job, but you'll barely have the first one cracked open by the time you're done.

Re: FilterMag questions/ found loose part in rear diff. 3400 mi.
Just going to necro-bump this thread because it was helpful.
I just changed the axle fluid on my 2019 PW with 20,000miles. Front fluid was still very clean and clear looking, rear was transparent but pretty dark. Front plug magnet had lots of metal on it, rear had less, interestingly. Cleaned off the locker sensor magnets with a qtip as is suggested, they were pretty coated with metal shavings already.
Added FilterMag GP101 magnets into front and rear diffs (hopefully this helps keep the lockers happy), refilled with Amsoil Severe Gear 75W90. Front took about 2.5qts, rear took about 3.5qts.
Probably will increase change intervals to 40-60k now that the magnets are in the initial wear-in fluid is out. Maybe more on the front since that fluid doesn’t get actually worked as many miles.
Worth noting: 2019+ Power Wagons still have helical gear LSD in the rear. “Regular” 2019+ 2500s with “anti-spin” rear diff is now a clutch-pack type LSD.

Re: FilterMag questions/ found loose part in rear diff. 3400 mi.
We've had lots of discussion years ago on the forum about the helical gear LSD. It doesn't work at all on sheer ice because there is not enough drive line torque to allow it to work. I had videos of my 2014 rear on ice with one tire just sitting there spinning... I think the clutch pack would work better for me (when I don't need the locker)btsbarton wrote: ↑Sun Aug 08, 2021 3:32 pmJust going to necro-bump this thread because it was helpful.

Maybe a bit better on ice depending on the preload.
Helical Gear type is smoother on the street, no clutch plates to wear out over time, no chatter, etc.
As you said, if I need to be locked up I can select that manually in the PW
2019+ let’s you lock the rear in 2WD

Changed my diff fluid recently and found my rear diff Filtermag was broken in half and had moved. Not sure what was going on, but I removed the front one and it snapped in half. I had not had any problems with them before, but I will not be running them any longer. I forgot to get picks when I was doing the change, but I figured I would put the info out. Not sure if anyone has had one bust.
