Perhaps we should have had them powder coated in Rust Color instead of black?

I am not completely positive yet, but I am pretty sure my powdercoated wk sliders are starting to get little tiny rust spots on them  I knew it was inevitable, but I thought I had a little more than half a winter before it would start
It's not just the rust belt either. When I lived in Florida, I had the same problem happen with powdered coated stuff. Salt in the air from the ocean. I hate salt!

DamageWagon's sliders are nice.

If you can, make them Sliders by Yourself.
I did mine in my Shop and they where nowhere near the Price of anything you can buy.

FYI, The N-Fabs and lots of other nerf steps have a plastic plug at the back to "finish" the tube. Problem is that at the front of the main tube where most of them bend in under the body, the tube is cut on a bias and there is no plug because the hole is no longer round at the point of the cut. So as the truck moves forward through rain, snow, mud, muck salt, etc., the inside of the tube packs up with crap that holds moisture and starts the rust process, because it can't exit through the back. And none of these tubes are powdercoated or metalized or galvanized or even painted on the inside. So, pull the plugs and flush them out occasionally. Maybe shoot the insides with something like Fluid Film before you install them.

Heavy duty no doubt.

Again, I don't have a shop nor the welder to assemble them.

Thanks Mike! I don't know how but in my dozens of checks and double checks I somehow made the support bars about two inches too long Imagemaybe I made them exactly how I wanted and now they I see it I wish I made them shorter. I'll fix that later. They are great protection against door dings and random stoplight-blowing Honda civics.

I'll pay you to make me a set when you get to Oregon. There's a guy in Calgary making them too but I'm not sure I'll have my truck with me the next time I'm there.

Reloader I think we can do that. I'll need to acquire my tools first though, I won't have a tube bender or a welder when I move darn it. By the way, we will be in state on Tuesday and up north by Wednesday.

Numbnuts I was half joking, but that is the problem. Shipping a crate with 300lbs and 8 ft length is expensive.

Has anyone tried to line-x or bedline the sliders to keep them from chipping and rusting?

I sprayed mine with bedliner. It works, but anything you use will wear through from shoes, rock hits, road debris, etc. I think you need to plan to have to touch up anything you use.

I thought about getting mine X-lined. But I would just tear the bottom off of it by dragging the rails on the rocks. I use bed liner in a spray can from Advanced Auto for touch up. I have to redo the whole rock rails now. Just too much rust on them for touch up. :(

My sliders are Line-X'ed and are closing out their second winter in Alaska with no rust stains peeking through anywhere. They mostly get used as steps, and so don't have any tears through the Line-X yet.

That's been my debate and worry. I got the sliders from WKO with the powder coat. I haven't really banged them up to much. But they were so slick this year in the ice and snow. I've been thinking about Line-X. I guess I'll see how badly I bang them up during the Moab event and then maybe Line-X them.

@Low_Sky Line-X improve the grip any when they're wet?

I put some leftover skateboard grip tape on mine, it's decent when dry, and useless in mud or ice/snow... I wonder if adding line-x (not the spray can stuff as it tends to be smoother and peel easier) where you step would maybe help? The line x in the bed of my dads truck definitely feels grippy when wet, not sure about snow though. Could be a crappy idea, just spitballing.

I used some rubberized grip tape as well. I'll get a pic later. Works well and doesn't thrash my legs if I'm wearing shorts.

Which nerf bars?

Post by Low_Sky » Mon Mar 13, 2017 12:23 pm

Line-X on the round tube is quite satisfactory for stepping. I have expanded metal treads below the doors, and the Line-X in that high traffic area isn't showing any signs of wearing through.

I got my sliders for rocker/door protection for those "oops" moments. I don't have any plans on hard core wheeling my daily driver and I'm not worried about the usual gripes about bed liner on sliders (it doesn't "slide" over rocks, and you'll just scrape it off when you try).

They have paid for themselves a few times. Once they stopped me from backing/turning over river boulder big enough to get into the rockers. I've also felt them pivoting the truck around trees and deep ruts on one of the really tight Jeep trails around here. No visible damage to the Line-X.

I bought a set of these and really like them if your looking for just a step. They are very solid for a step and they're at the perfect height. My truck won't do and serious off-roading until it's paid off so these are great for now. I plan to build a set of sliders eventually but these will serve my purposes for the next few years.

Yes, I actually had mine delivered from WhiteKnuckle direct to the local Line-X place back in Ohio where I was previously stationed. I had their std. blk LINE-X applied. No cracks or rust on the top surface, no rust on the screw holes for the diamond plate, and no rust on or under the diamond plate. The only rust I see on the attch bolts, the attachment flange, and on the bottom of the attachment brackets where the coating wasn't sprayed on that thick and I've rubbed them pretty hard on a few rocks. I wire brushed the rust best I could, and applied some 3M rubber undercoating touch up.
