Quick update ---diff temps...w/Mag-Hytec

Post by TwinStick » Tue Aug 09, 2016 5:29 pm

Just got back from another camping trip. Power Wagon, camper, 50qt ARB & the bikes. All went well. Truck performed awesome. Was able to pull hills @ 70 mph all day long (as long as i didn't get blocked in behind a pokey person). Mostly 5th gear @ 3400 rpms. Sometimes 4th @ 5200 or so. I passed a LOT of other pickups w/trailers up the hills. My particular truck likes to make it's power above 4200 rpms. When i go from 5th to 4th, I can accelerate up the hill as long as I keep the rpms up. Temp only went up the width of the needle, to exactly the halfway mark on the gauge. Except for one hill I pulled in 4th @ 5500+ rpms, then it went the width of the needle above the halfway mark. Not too shabby. My 30,000 lb aux engine oil cooler is not installed on this truck yet either ! LOVE the way the truck pulls this little camper. ARB worked flawlessly. Had it plugged into my 500/1000wat inverter. It drew 110-150 watts-according to the digital readout on the inverter. Here is a weird thing----12v power outlet in dash & the one in the center console both say 12v 20 amp, yet the alarm on the inverter kept tripping when it was plugged into the one in the center console. Digital readout said it was fluctuating 11.3-12.5 volts. The one in the dash said 12.7-14.5 volts & it did not trip. So, we kept it plugged into the dash one on pass side. It was nice, brought a load of frozen prepared veggies from garden for my mom & then changed it to fridge & brought a load of stuff back, that we bought when down there.

 Average mpg's.........................................7.4 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh yeah, forgot to add: Rear diff temp on way down 256*. Rear diff temp on way back 215*.

I was driving a little harder on the way down. 70-80 vs 65-70 on the way home. Both times measured at the halfway point. That is with the factory full syn fluid. Not a fan. Getting me one of these soon, like tomorrow: http://mag-hytec.com/store/index.php?ma ... ucts_id=27 and I am gonna fill it with this: http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/g ... e=FGRQT-EA

Perfect choice for towing, had mine on for several years and couldn't be happier with it, very well made and extra capacity and better cooling.

Any particular reason why you choose the long life gear oil over the severe gear ? I recommend the GP101 filter mag also.

I'll be honest, I am sick & f-ing tired of changing gear lube. I figure if that shit is good for a 1/2 million miles in a semi truck, it should last longer than 12k in my truck pulling a f-ing 3500 lb camper. When the oil was $8 a qt it was no big deal but now some of that shit is $30 a qt. http://mag-hytec.com/store/index.php?ma ... ucts_id=57

I was gonna use that stuff, but $30 a qt ? NOT. It actually ran 10* cooler than the Amsoil. http://www.fourwheeler.com/how-to/trans ... wing-axle/

It was $18 a qt last i checked & now it doubled in price.

The long life Amsoil is designed with a different chemical additive compound than the Severe Gear oil. The long life gear oil is designed for big rigs, heavy farm equipment, & construction/ excavation equipment. The ring gear sets & carriers are much much larger on big rigs, and hence, have far bigger sumps & much higher capacities. As a consequence, their overall temps remain well below the magic shearing (onset oxidation & acidic conversion) temp of the oil. Their lubricity properties are conserved much longer, and thus, the additives are less aggressive in heat amelioration than the Severe Gear. The long life is designed as a low temp, high mileage (500K), fluid. The severe gear is what I'd run, it's only about $3-$5 more/qt and can go 100k miles or 2yrs between changes.

Today's findings: Ambient air temp-74*F when I started the truck this morning & took off. 80*F when I got back.

25 mile trip there with the camper in tow (water tank empty). 25 mile trip back with no trailer. I removed the extra 1/2 qt of fluid i added & brought it down to factory spec for fill level. Mopar 75/90 full synthetic (according to the dealer anyways & only 2-3000 miles on this oil. Speeds: 55-70 there & back.

Rear diff oil temp upon arrival with camper: 170*F
Oil temp after sitting for 40 min. : 140*
Oil trmp when i got home without camper: 160*F

Not sure if that is normal or not for a simple 25 mile trip. It certainly is within the temp range of gear oil. But the 256*F & the 315*F readings were not, IMHO anyways. To be fair, the 315*F reading was a few years back, pulling our 10,500lb toyhauler. But that is still way too friggin hot. Even @ 160* today, I could not hold my palm on diFF cover for more than a second or 2.

Temp gauges used were as follows: HFreight IR laser thermometer, today-along with an analog food thermometer, actually put into the oil through fill hole & a digital food thermometer, also directly in the oil. All were within 2* of each other. Analog one only goes to 220*F. Anyways, i believe my readings to be accurate. I sure hope the Mag-Hytec coolers fins & double the oil capacity will significantly reduce temps. Trying to avoid being stranded on the side of the road in BFE when we start traveling long distances across the USA once my wife retires.

Should get cover within a week or so. stay tuned.

Upon further review I just may use the Amsoil 75/110 severe gear for the rear & use the stuff I already have in the front diff. Trouble is every manufacturer posts different specs that some companies don't & vise/vera. Makes my head ache reading all of them & trying to figure them out.

I've been usin the amsoil severe gear for almost 150k km (bout 90k miles) and have only changed it once. Check it every 10k miles and it was done at 75k miles. I tow a fair bit heavy and work the truck. Very little metal filings on magnet. Just crud. Gears look pristine

So, here are my :wtf: findings:

Old fluid had 1000 miles on it. Magnet was all gunked up. (they replaced it when they did the work) Took 10 Q-tips to clean it good. Inside factory diff cover was coated in the silvery stuff you find in diffs. But g-damn, this stuff has only been in there 1000 miles.

Got the cover today. made a trip into town & back before install. Reading: 130*F.

Installed the cover, new Amsoil. Exactly 2x the stock fluid. 6 qts total.

Drove into town & back. Reading 130*. :wtf: Maybe I will only see the difference when towing & working it hard ?

I am gonna be pissed if $300 & double the oil & cooling fins got me the exact same temps. Camper should be ready in a week or so for pick up.

I took a lot of pics but my g-damn phone is not letting me upload. Kid moved out so I have no phone/internet tech anymore.

Stay tuned.

130* is a very respectable temperature for normal driving I think. Get yourself a filtermag gp101 for next time and that will cut down on the crud covering everything. I'm glad you're going to the effort of checking temps like this, it'll be good to have solid information instead of just theory and advertising. subd and thanks

Well I sure hope it works much better when towing.

I know 130* is respectable. That is 45* under the "critical 175*F mark." If it does not make a difference in towing temps, $300 was a LOT to pay for a drain plug !

Regardless, I can now change fluid yearly, with ease. Dipstic with magnet goes right into the oil at least, unlike factory one that is above the fill line of the oil.

I asked my wife: "does that cover make her rearend look big or phatt ?" She laughed.

Stay tuned PW fans ( in the voice of the old Batman tv movies)

I finally found something with temperature readings: http://www.bestlubeusa.com/gearlube.pdf

They recorded up to 370*F !!! Maybe my vehicle's diffs ain't broken in yet ? LOL  At least it makes me feel better about my 315*F reading.

Brought camper home today, still not fixed. Outside temp was 70*F. Diff temp when I got home was 149*F. I was doing 55-70 but it was raining too, so i figure that lowered the temp some?
