About to pull the trigger on a 15 PW, need some advice!

If it's about Power Wagons, all generations, this is where it'll go. This is the original PWR Forum Power Wagon Technical Discussion Section. And this includes everything that doesn’t fit in any one of the other categories related to the truck goes here!

I bought my 15 PW and now have 32k on it. I love it. I bumper pull a 11500 38foot open range camper all over the country. I guess I have been lucky, the only mods I did was a muffler delete so I can hear hear my engine and shift points (old school) and I installed no drill Firestone 5000 airbags to accomidate the 1200lb hitch weight. I also swapped the factory 285/70/17 duratracs after 30k for Bridgestone at ko2 315/70/17. The Bridgestone are E rated so thicker sidewall and of course wider. This, according to and verified by Dodge changes my towing capabilities to that of what a similiar ram 2500 non power wagon would be- 15k towing 3300 payload but with all the off road capabilities of the pw when unhooked. I drive a lot of desert trails in Arizona and Colorado and except for the width as compared to my previous jeep I love my pw.
Did they change the sticker on your door? By law. You have to go by the sticker on the door for your weight. If you get into an accident. That is what the police will go by. If you are over that, tough titties.

There is no way changing the tires added any capacity whatsoever to your truck. Technically the stock tires are rated for a normal 2500,they will just do it with more flex. You are lacking the springs of a normal 2500, without those your payload is about half that of a normal 2500.

Well, kind of. There isn't a direct correlation between spring rate and towing capacity. Tow rating is more like a summation of all the parts, D rated tires included. Springs, tires, sway bar, etc all go into the towing and carrying capacities.

There pretty much is a direct correlation when the only difference between the power wagon and normal 2500 is the springs. The low payload on the power wagon knocks down the towing capacity quite a bit. The tires are rated for more than the 10000 pound gvwr that the normal 2500's get, you just need the springs to match.

That simply isn't true. The Power Wagon comes with D rated tires, softer springs, and lighter rear sway bar. The closer you look, the more you find that nearly every chassis part on the Power Wagon is different than a standard 2500. Also, while the springs do contribute to carrying capacity, there isn't a 9K, 10K, 11K, etc spring. The weight ratings of the truck are a formula, not a specific rear spring. Will a stiffer rear spring tow better? Sure, but so will the E rated tires you were so quick to dismiss. There are plenty of guys who have towed over the max rating of the truck with no consequence whatsoever. The ratings are simply a label on the door sill (to a point).
