Engine Trouble

Post by coder » Sun Jul 10, 2016 10:48 pm

Yesterday I was out running errands, stopped at the last store and when I came out and started my truck I heard a faint boom the engine turned real slowly but would not started. I tried several times but no luck I thought maybe it a bad battery.

Today I had the battery tested all was well, checked for codes and had 2 P2172 (High Air Flow - Vacuum Leak Detected - Possible bad Throttle Body) and B1623 (Engine Diagnostic Code). So just to make sure I replaced the Throttle Body and recharged the battery.

The engine started but just for a few seconds made a loud propellor while rotating sound then dies. It's been sitting in a parking lot for 2 days now, tomorrow morning I will tow it to the dealer. I am not sure what going on, but I'm bracing myself for the worst but hoping for the best.

The engine has 140k miles on it, has been meticulously maintained and run flawlessly until now.

Thoughts, ideas, anyone else have engine problems similar to these?

Suggestions: check MAP sensor and connections for leak .... it uses vacuum.

A few people have reported the intake manifold may have split/broke. You mentioned a "faint boom" . I guess it is made of plastic. This would make huge leak. There may be some other problem causing a backfire that could split intake.

Hey Coder, sorry about your troubles, a vacuum leak will cause the backfiring you're experiencing, the leak upsets the fuel/air mixture balance the MAP sensor is looking for. Have you checked vacuum hoses for loose connections, dry rot, or worn/split gaskets? The boom sounds like a lean misfire from unmetered air f'ng up the mixture --bad PCV valve or an EGR issue could cause this--is the boom periodic or continuous?

Also I believe the brake booster pump pulls significant vacuum, spray soapy water around that fixture to see if it's got a leak or broken hose, operate the brakes, if that's the issue, you'll hear a whirring noise from the booster or under the pedal.

My moms plastic/composite intake manifold cracked on her 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis. Had same issues as you describe.

Just got off the phone with dealer, a valve guide broke and fell down in the cylinder and did some very bad things, a 5.7 long block is in my future.

I know the cost but I won't be sharing the details, however the work is being done at dealer I trust with all factory parts so the cost will be higher.

I could find a general repair shop to source and install an engine for about 1/2 the cost. But I plan keeping the truck for awhile, and don't have confidence that I would be getting the same quality.

For a transmission I would go to local shop for a rebuild but not for an engine.

Just curious. Did they say if it popped a hole in the piston or ventilated the block?
Sorry for the bad news! Odd for something like that to happen on start up. I guess anything can happen though. :(

The lifetime warranty wasn't available when I purchased my truck only a 100k mile extended warranty, which would have been expired if I purchased it but, I didn't.

I still feel that 5.7 Hemi's is a solid engine, most last well past 250k miles.

I did have some ongoing symptoms:
- Burned a quart of oil every 3k miles
- Significant knock on cold start-up
- Slowly disappearing coolant even after replacing the waterpump, hoses, and radiator

These may have been telltale signs of this failure, but I don't know for sure.

I don't think there was a hole in the block but it sounded like marbles in a blender when I tried to start the engine.

Thinking about this a little more. Valve train failure when starting could be the initial cranking torque jumping/breaking the timing chain or camshaft and then valve and piston collision occur. I would be interested in knowing if the dealer does a deeper forensic inspection.

I'd like to know when happened too, unfortunately I'd have to pay them to take it apart and do a deeper inspection and there's no benefit at this point the long block has been ordered.

Curious if you'd be willing to share the name of the dealer you trust to do this? -Given that you are quite near me, I might as well look for a good, capable dealer for the upcoming regular service visits for my '16.

Sure, Tuttle-Click Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram in Irvine, I originally purchased my PW there and when I need work done that's' where I take it. They have two new PW's on the lot right now black and a White one, and a inferno red 07 on the back-lot waiting for an engine.

If you live in South Orange County expect to pay $100-$140 in labor at most shop/dealers so that's to be expected, I do much of my work myself for that very reason. As far as ladyboys I have never noticed that, unfortunately nothing surprises me anymore here in California.

I heard recently that many manufacturers don't pay the dealership techs for diagnostics time. -If thats the case with RAM, then I can see how the dealership in some cases will want to have their time covered one way or the other when spending time diagnosing

If you are under warranty everything is covered. If not, they will charge you 1 hour labor for diagnostic time then deduct that from the cost if you have them do the work. I have paid them to diagnose something before then fix it myself for a lot less, depending on the situation.
