Locking Under Seat Storage Drawer

Post by Retired BLM Rig » Sat May 28, 2016 3:51 am

So I decided that I wanted to add some kind of secure lockable storage to my truck, just some place to lock up my wallet or other valuables if I decided to venture off on foot or to keep something away from the grandkids' sticky fingers, when I wasn't looking ;) . After looking around on the internet I realized that the choices were pretty slim. I liked the "Console Vault", but the price was a little more than I wanted to pay. I then started to consider my options of modifying something else to work from some other vehicle. What I came up with was the Bestop locking storage drawer for a Jeep TJ (#42641-01).

It also comes with a locking cable, so that even if someone wanted to take the time to remove the mounting bolts, it would still be tethered to the seat frame.
It wasn't an exact fit, but it would serve the purpose. After taking measurements, I decided to order it to see if it would work.
The box fit under the seat with an 1/8" to spare, but it would have to be shifted to the inside to clear the power seat motor and the bracket was 2-9/16" too narrow.

The unit comes with a bracket that attaches with countersunk screws to the bottom of the box.
My solution was to cut the bracket 1-1/4"+- offset from center and drill new screw holes 2-9/16" farther in on the longer bracket that would be on the outside. I considered making a whole new bracket the correct length, but this is really quite strong and if someone really wants to steal it, they will.

My truck has vinyl flooring so I punched out four small felt pads to put over the other screw heads that would wear into the flooring (this wouldn't be an issue on carpet or on the Jeep it was designed for).
IMG_0493.jpg
Here's the finished product. I slid the seat forward so you could see what it looks like installed.
IMG_0494.jpg
The drawer opens all the way, however a floor mat would interfere with access.
The drawbacks are that it's not accessible while you're sitting in the drivers seat and it will interfere with the foot comfort of a rear seat passenger that's not a grandkid with small feet.
One thing to consider is that if you decide to try this and your truck has carpet, it may be a tighter fit.
Overall I'm very happy with the quality of the box and the way it turned out.

Now I'm interested in hearing and seeing the ideas that some of you have had to add extra storage capability to your trucks. I have a couple more ideas that I'll be sharing soon.

Has anyone tried to add 4G rear in-floor storage to a 3G truck?

Keep calm and mod on. Happy Memorial Day! :patriot:

That's a great idea, nice work! I've been looking for an alternative to the console vault as well and have come up empty handed. I may have to doing something similar.

Do you think it'd be more accessible for the driver of it was mounted under the passenger seat? I think I could probably reach that, but I have longer arms than most folks.

Possibly, but that's where the factory jack mounts so I did't consider that option. If you wanted to relocate your jack, I'm sure it would probably work.

Yeah, that's about what I paid for mine. Sometimes you can score an open box return on "Amazon Warehouse Deals" for about 10-20% off.

Long ago and far away (on DodgeTalk in the 3G PW Forum), there was a discussion and a group buy of some sort for a locking, steel center console insert that was secure enough for firearms. Looked good at the time but I did not bite, so don't remember all the details. Would have been around 2006-2007.

I bought their metal storage console that you are referencing, they are no longer being made or even in business. Diesel-Max was their name.

You can see the old page on it here. No pictures though.

Not to hijack your thread, but is there a cheaper place to get the keyed locks for the floor storage bins in the 16 trucks? $100 seems like an awful lot for what they are.

I like that, except that it looks like the lock isn't flush with the panel.
