The journey to 37's
So I bought a used set of 37's along with a bunch of other Jeep parts off of a guy in NC a few weeks ago to mount on my fancy new Method wheels I bought for my PW.
So I picked the best looking set of 4 our of the 5 tires and headed over to a local shop to have them mounted and balanced. Ended up dropping them off on Saturday and went to pick them up on Monday. That's when things started going down hill. One of the guys asked how well the tires rode before, I told him I didn't know since I bought the tires used but did notice that one of the wheels had an exorbitant amount of weight on it. He said they could only static balance the tires and they might ride rough. First wheel on, and the lug nuts wouldn't fit. No problem I thought! They put the original wheel back on. Quick trip over to the parts store and i'll be good to go. Lo and behold, no one local carries the thin style lugs that will fit this wheel. So I get home and order some gorilla lug nuts from Amazon that will arrive on Wednesday.
Get the lug nuts shipped to work and head to the next town over to get the wheels put on. Wheels installed now. Sounds awful at half turn and barely noticeable at full turn. Get out to check where it's rubbing and it's in the back part of the inner fender as other members have noted. no big deal, can take a heat gun to that later and get that squared away. Start driving again and the tires howl a bit which is expected. Accelerate past 40mph and all hell breaks loose. Steering wheel shimmying like i've only seen once before in my JKR. Drive like a grandma all the way home staying below 40mph where the steering feels great!. At that point I start questioning my choice of purchasing used tires as one might imagine. It starts raining outside so there's no switching tires tonight, decide i'll go ahead and drive it to work like this in the morning and re-asses after that.
Next morning a friend on facebook suggests to have tires road force balanced by a local shop near my office. So we give that a shot. More bad news. One tire is good to go. The other three have...well lets say issues. One RFB at 35 lbs and another at 50ish i believe. They were able to half this. Another had some other type of issue which I can't remember. Needless to say the technicians notes on the tires were plentiful. I wish I had a copy of that sheet in hindsight. But they thought the tires should ride better as the previous balance was way off. They didn't.
On the way home I decided to push through the monster shimmy at 40mph to see what would happen. In my Jeep there were certain speeds that tires behaved similarly. Thankfully I was able to cruise at 60mph with minimal shimmy. Next step? Let's put stock tires up front and see how she handles. So that's what I did. Two 33's up front and a pair of 37's out back. Mad Max look. She drove great!
Full disclosure. I had $900 invested in the truck load of used parts I bought off this craiglist seller. Thus far i've recuperated $360 of that and still have a set of 5 wheels with TPMS sensors along with a OR Fab tire carrier for a Jeep left to sell. When it's all said and done I should have less than $400 invested in the tires. Their primary purpose is for offroading at various trails. I'd rather drive on the 37's to the trailhead than swap out tires once I get there, but at this point that's not going to be feasible. So for now i'll swap the rears the night before we head out and the fronts once I get to the trail. Or I may trying mounting them all up again when I get some time to see how it rides with the tires in different locations. Two of the wheels/tires don't have much weight on them at all. For some reason one with a bunch of weight and one with very little were the two up front. I feel like two with very little weight on the front axle would be the better combination.
And now, the pictures...
TLDR: Bought used tires - they ride like crap

Yes, big fan of those indeed! Its a shame they appear to only offer a 0 offset rim in the 17" size. I need a +18mm to fit 37s on my 15'.

Re: The journey to 37's
Mine is a 16 and they fit these 37's just fine with the exception of the rearmost part of the inner fender. I'll take pictures later, but it's similar to what's been illustrated by other members.NickTF wrote:Yes, big fan of those indeed! Its a shame they appear to only offer a 0 offset rim in the 17" size. Send some pics of the contact points and the front and rear of the truck with the wheel pointed straight if you can when you have time. What tires are you running?
Re: The journey to 37's
Well it looks cool! Great looking wheels but too bad about the tire but at least you didint lose your ass on them. What sliders are those?
If I start listing Mods I would have to change the list daily

Custom made by a shop nearby. They used my vehicle as a template. Very happy with them so far.RamGentry wrote:Well it looks cool! Great looking wheels but too bad about the tire but at least you didint lose your ass on them. What sliders are those?

Re: The journey to 37's
I failed to take any from the rear of the truck. I'll have to do that the next time I mount them up. I do have a couple of the front however! The tires are 37x12.50 R17 Cooper STT's.NickTF wrote:Send some pics of the contact points and the front and rear of the truck with the wheel pointed straight if you can when you have time. I had no issues fitting 37's. I had all the correct parts up front and only took an hour to trim.

Re: The journey to 37's
Sorry to hear about your troubles! That's odd that you had that much difficulty with Cooper STTs! I had a set (in 37x12.50R17) on my '87 K5Jimmy and LOVED them!!!! I had similar difficulties to yours when I had Goodyear Wrangler MTR Kevlars on my Power Wagon in a 37x12.50R17 size though. (ended up getting a full refund from Goodyear, they were THAT bad) I hope you are able to work things out! I have Nitto Trail Grapplers now and absolutely adore them!!! (second set, I toasted the rears of the first set being a dummy and doing burnouts, fronts were at 50%, had a big offroad event coming up and got a full new set. I kept the old set and bought six new, was going to run 2 new and 2 50% tread on my other truck (86 K30) (along with the 2 on the wear bars ones as spares) on my other truck but ended up selling the truck. (I actually still have the 6 (2 new, 2 50%, 2 on the bars) and am trying to sell them locally since I (sadly) don't see myself getting a second truck again anytime soon) Anyways, good luck with your tire dilemna! Hope you get it worked out okay; glad to hear your not too much $$$ in one them!
I love those Method wheels, I keep hemming and hawing about maybe picking up a set of double standards in black for my 'Wagon! I just haven't gotten the gumption to swallow the price yet, LOL!
Great looking 'Wagon you've got there!!!!! (I could be partial to gray though, LOL!) I look forward to seeing how you solve the inner fender rubbing problems, my 37s have been rubbing for oh.... 46k miles now and I still haven't gotten around to dealing with it; maybe seeing your fix will be the kick in the pants I need, LOL!

Re: The journey to 37's
Trimming the fender liner is very easy. Pull them out and cut them with an angle grinder or dremel. I used an angle die grinder with a cutoff wheel on the pinch welds.
Since I took this picture I drilled two small holes and zip tied the fender liner to the holes in the body mount just behind the fender. I also heated the hump with a heat gun and formed the fender liner around the pinch weld.

Turning into another good "fit 37" tires thread". I really do like those wheels but American Racing has an Ansen wheel which has a similar machined face/black satin fake beedlock ring that I really like and is the correct 18mm offset. Decisions decisions.......... Was going to just use 1.5" wheel adapters to move the OEM wheels out 1.5" but I've talked myself into running new wheels. Ansen wheel can be seen here: http://www.americanracing.com/wheel/279 ... n-off-road

Re: The journey to 37's
Those do look pretty good. I'm just a sucker for the Method wheels. My final contenders were this wheel and another Method wheel. I'm happy with my choice Of course i'm a bit biased, a friend of mine has them on his Raptor and my mom has them on her JKU. I think they look great on any rig.NickTF wrote:Turning into another good "fit 37" tires thread". Re: The journey to 37's
Can't fault him too much over his choice. It's a Roush Raptor, supercharged and all that good stuff. Very nice truck. I considered a Raptor before buying the PW, but it's honestly not well suited for the type of offroading available out here. Will wrote:Just fucked up the thread with that Rapturd

Well damn, look what I stumbled on in a parking garage in Atlanta GA. Looks like a street queen to me. Haha. Re: The journey to 37's
Just in case I didn't catch it- have you done anything to the suspension to fit the 37s? There's a guy in my 4wd club with a 2016 Wagon and he wants to know if he can run 37s stock. Thanks!

Re: The journey to 37's
Yea,a supercharged Raptor is no joke. Hell, even the stock ones are legit for intended use. I just could not get by with no seating for 6, lame payload, fair towing lbs, short ass bed, no winch, no lockers, did i mention mini bed?.......just to name a few things. It was an easy choice.PW But I did look and drive a few.
I have 37s and a most of the Thuren check list at 2.5 king stage 3. I do rub at FULL lock on control arms but its getting less and less as thing wear down and settle in. People trip because it looks stock but just bigger. With 37s I did loose some pop but the ride quality, body roll and over all handling is WAY better.
Wheels and stance look great BTW!!!!!!
