Anyone keep track of their trucks lifetime avg fuel mileage?

Post by MoparToYou » Sat May 07, 2016 8:21 pm

My truck has two trip meters, one of which I reset often, the other has never been reset. This is what the computer says the average lifetime fuel mileage is on my truck, from day one when I picked it up at the dealership. This includes daily driving to and from work, and taking the wife out on the town on Friday nights. It also includes all of my four wheeling trips, and 1/3 of the miles on my truck have been towing miles, with a 16' enclosed trailer that weighs about 5000 to 6000 lbs when loaded.

What is the average lifetime fuel mileage of your Power Wagon?

My 2012 only has one average, and I decided to do it for one year for fun. I'm only 6 months into the experiment and I think it said the average was around 11.8mpg.

I'm getting about 12.4 mpg, most of that is highway. Just over 14k miles now and three months of ownership.

I average 13.8 if I don't reset it. It's accurate also, speedometer is correct.

I use the Fuelly app: http://www.fuelly.com/car/ram/2500/2015 ... ure/425067

I only have one complaint - it offers city and highway miles, but no towing miles.

Life-to-date average on my '05 is just under 10. I have never reset the computer since new, and it shows 9.7, but a good portion of that was on an uncorrected speedo/odo with 35s. Hand calcs came in at 9.9 or so. I now have an Edge programmer that corrected the speedo/odo, but also bumped the power a little and changed shift points. Truck is getting slightly better mileage with the programmer, but is a lot more pleasant to drive.

So do you guys just not tow that often? Or do I get the led foot of the year award? Because my average posted at the start of this thread is less than 8 mpg. Here is a picture of the trailer I tow, ... not that big of a trailer.

Image

I refueled at a gas station about 45 miles away from home yesterday and reset my other trip meter at that time. The return trip home was on the interstate where the speed limit is 80 mph, and home is 3000 ft higher in elevation than where I fueled up. The truck was able to maintain the speed limit for the most part, but did drop to 72 mph briefly on the steepest grade. Fuel mileage on the way home ... 5.4 mpg.

Anyone keep track of their trucks lifetime avg fuel mileage?

Post by Low_Sky » Sun May 08, 2016 2:32 pm

Well, if you do 80 mph on the interstate, or pull that box trailer a lot, your mileage is going to suck. Wind resistance is a b****. Aerodynamic drag is a function of velocity squared. 70 mph vs 80 mph is a 15% increase in speed, 30% increase in drag.

Most of my highway miles are 55-65 mph. If we have any 70+ mph highways in Alaska, I haven't found them yet.

FWIW I averaged 10.5mpg when it was stock. Tuner and 37's put it in a better hwy gear. 60mph mostly.

I never tow, but my traveling weight is around 8500 pounds, with roof rack, water tank and bag awning on the rack.

I averaged 18 mpg on a trip last week. About 500 miles, although much of it was between 45 and 55 mph (drove to Yellowstone and toured around for a couple days and drove home) and I spend the extra $ for premium so I can get fuel without ethanol which seems to just about pay for itself with the improved mileage. I wish I could get a good tune to really take advantage of the higher octane.
