Orders to DC--PW future?

Post by adeluca73 » Tue Apr 26, 2016 3:59 pm

So,

As some of you know, after 20+ yrs in the military, I was planning on retiring soon, moving out west or back to Alaska, and spend my retired days exploring and hunting off the beaten path. That's what I've been slowly preparing my PW for the past few years--not today's need, but tomorrow's plans. I'd say I was about 1/2-2/3 of the way complete w/ my PW transformation, and since it's not my DD, I was planning on having it out of commission for several weeks this summer doing more sustained mods, so it would be completed before I retire....

That was the plan. I just got promoted a few weeks ago, and along with the promotion, I was also given a new assignment to the Pentagon (DC :thppt: ) with a 1 September Report No Later Than Date (RNLTD) Apparently retirement is going to have to wait. I can't imagine driving the PW around DC is very practical, and I'm sure I'll be busy on most weekends, so the question is this: is it practical to essentially garage the PW for 3-4 years until this assignment is through and I can retire, or cut my losses, sell it this summer, and start over again with a 2020 PW when it's time...

Tough choices...it's all happening very quickly.

Just my 2 cents; if it were me I would park the Power Wagon but try to run it a little every few months at least.
As long as you have a decent place for storage should be no problem.
You have done a lot of nice Mods; would be the pits to have to start over.
I have only been to DC once (as a tourist) and found it was easier to get around with bicycles than a car, so I would agree a PW may not be the funnest in traffic.....

I would sell it and start over when you retire. 4 years is a long time to pay insurance, storage, and depreciation if you're not using it.

Hello adeluca73,

3-4 years is a long time and with PW production numbers very low there is no guarantee there will be a 2020 PW. Is it possible for you live outside of DC maybe in Virginia and do some occasional off-roading on the weekend while you build your retirement PW?

Hey Coder, yeah--I could, & probably will live in Virginia somewhere, but it's all a huge trade-off w/ commuting distance & time--how far from a bus line, to a train, to a metro into the Pentagon vs. living further out in the country where off-roading & hunting etc. is more accessible, not really happy about all this...

i'ld pull the locker bypass out and sell the PW. you'll save alot of $$$ on insurance, registration, and storage. having a vehicle in storage is just inviting gaskets, tires, etc. to dry out even with period engine starts....don't forget to have someone drive it a little to throw vital fluids in drive train too. if they aren't producing PW's when your ready to buy again, you can always buy used.

my wife almost got transferred to DC and i was going to have to move. thank goodness it didn't happen as i worried what i was going to do with my 05' pw and all my guns! plus the only thing to hunt in DC was politicians and lobbyists.

I'd sell it now, get a Prius and in four years get a new PW.
adeluca73 wrote:That was the plan.
So you start a new plan and one year down the road, another new plan falls into your lap, or four years from now a 2020 PW is a watered down POS, What now? No PW, so now you try to find another PW, that may or may not meet your expectations. If you love your present PW like I do mine, keep it!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, "in the future, I may own another car or pickup, but I'll always have my '05 PW".

Keep the PW. This way you can join us at Rausch Creek. You already have done a lot to it. Also you never know if there will be a 2020 PW. The V8 is on the way out for most vehicles starting in 2018. Might be a 4 banger in the 2020 PW. There is a lot of places around the metro DC area that has bus and train to get around.

I dunno. I have a 1999 Pontiac Trans Am Firehawk that I bought 10 years ago with 24k miles and now it has 34k miles. I kept it in a storage unit when I was renting and now that I own my home I keep it here in my garage. I've been payin insurance and registration for ten years now and I still wouldn't sell it. I used to drive it more but since I've gotten back into duck huntin and I have a lab that I've trained myself, I don't drive it as much as I should. But if I sold it I know I'd regret it everyday. I change the oil and check over everything every year and run at least a tank or two of gas thru it. It always starts and doesn't usual all have any problems. Knock on wood. As much as you have into this truck and how you enjoy it, I don't think 3-4 years is too long to keep it. Just my .02.

I would say if you plan on having a power wagon in the future then keep this one assuming you are happy with it. The way I see it is the price tag for a new 2020 PW may be crazy high, democrats may take over and put all kinds of regulations on the 2020 and like the others said it may not be made in 2020.

Keeping it you know what you have, can mod it every once in a while to get away from work and keep your dream alive.

Thanks for all the sincere perspective --all good to chew on. I'm torn for sure. In the end, it is only a truck, but damn if it's not exactly what I've needed & wanted for years. I have a few months to mull it over. If I can get somewhere 20-30 miles outside the Beltway, keeping it might be ok. It's nearly paid off already too...

You may not be able to mod a 2020 like your current PW. You never know what regulations RAM will have to follow. Or if there will be aftermarket support for suspension, engine, etc.

And do you really want to start over when you retire? Wouldn't it be better to have it sitting there, ready to go, waiting for you?

Keep it, put it in the same storage containing as your M1A. You already took the largest percentage of depreciation, your truck's value will remain relatively stable over the next 3 or 4 years.

Pay it off. Put it in storage, it will not hurt it if you store it away. I have another truck that I have stored for about 10 years now and literally did nothing to it, not even an oil change. I put my original PW battery on it recently, put fresh gas in it, started right up just like I left it. I'll be putting it back on the road this summer and am absolutely glad I never got rid of it! Even though all the pressure from everyone telling me to sell it, and the practicality of not needing it for the 10 years, it paid off. It owes me nothing and I never needed the cash from selling it.

If you don't need the cash from selling it, and it is something that you absolutely will be using in the future, then keep it. 10 years will go by in a snap. Your only talking about a few. That's really nothing compared to what I've been through. It will suck having to start all over again, especially if you can't get the same configuration and options you had already owned. And if you do sell it, keep in mind that you will end up cutting your losses twice; the first will be when you sell it, the second will be all the time you will have to spend again to get everything back together the way it was. That's assuming that you don't spend more time later because it ends up being more difficult to get the same results. If it does take more time, well then that can be a greater loss in itself in that it's time that should have been spent enjoying what you should have saved in the first place.

Maybe live in DC for the shorter commute and rent a garage in VA for the PW, drive it occasionally on weekends.

Again good points...I don't need the money, and I guess it wouldn't hurt to just sit on it for a few years using it sporadically. As it stands now, I maybe drive it once a weekend, so I'm already sort of doing the same thing since I quit using it as a DD a few months ago. It would be nice to keep the miles down as well. I was on track for over 36k at the end of year 2.

Reloader--my M25 Crazy Horse (Mod'd M1A) is the least of the firearm storage headaches I'm trying to figure out right now :lockedandloaded: I may need to off load 2+ safes of guns at my folks in Michigan before departure. Moving is great--move number 8 in 20 years :patriot:

Sell the truck, it would be dumb to keep it.

Your in quite a dilemma... I am just trying to help

In all seriousness though, I dont see a reason to sell it. If this curve ball wasnt thrown at you and the plan of retirement was still in play, would you be selling the truck in 4 years and changing up? Probably not. So why sell it now? Just because you wont be using the truck like planned for the next several years doesnt mean the thing will turn into a pile of junk when you finally get to put it to your intended use. Just drive it once and a while and keep taking care of it. Plus you can keep plucking away at mods and upgrades when you have the time. Not to mention the damn thing is about paid for... Just keep the ol girl.
