Oil pressure sensor question

2008 QC w/5.7 & G-56.

I am getting erroneous readings from it. Oil is full. No light has come on---even when it is barely reading any pressure. If i shut truck off & restart, it goes right up to where it is supposed to---about an 1/8" to a 1/4" past the halfway mark. That is where it has been since new. Only 40,298 miles.

Do you think it is the sender/sensor ???
Could it be the oil pump ???
If it is the sender, if goes completely bad, will oil gush out somewhere ???
How hard is it to replace ???

Does it only happen when you start it on a real cold morning, like around zero? My 07 did that once and I think it was a low voltage condition to the module that controls the instrument cluster. I cleaned the battery terminal and all the grounds I could find and it's been fine since (knock on wood).

No, i doubt that. New battery. 270 amp alternator. In addition to all the factory grounds (also removed, cleaned, reinstalled & sprayed with Fluid Film), I ran a bunch more that i made out of 2 gauge welding wire. I soldered on my own cable lugs, cleaned the mounting spots down to bare metal & after hooked up, sprayed them all real good with Fluid Film. I ran one from back of bed to frame, front of bed to frame, bed to cab, rear of cab to frame, drivers side front fender to frame, pass side front fender to frame, battery to frame & battery to front drivers side fender. It think it is the most grounded truck in the history of trucks.

The most comon issue is they start to seep oil into the sensor body and into the connector. It may not even be wet on the outside yet. This will cause incorrect readings and can reult in intermittent zero reading on the gauge. They are cheap and fairly easy to replace.

I've replace the hemi oil sensor for exactly the situation described (on a 2004 Hemi Durango). The internal seals in the sensor started leaking through to the connector, and I would get an intermittent oil pressure light. For my situation, the dash light came on / off quickly (along with the really annoying "ding") when the engine was warmed up and I was idling in drive. This also happens to be when oil pressure is generally the lowest. It's just screwed into the front of the engine, though you may be a small hassle to get direct access. The new sensor I bought already had thread tape installed. Make sure the sensor mating connector is cleaned up before reconnecting.

The power steering sensor went out in the same fashion on the same vehicle, and I only noticed by the transmission fluid drip on my driveway. Also fairly easy to change.

Yea, sounds like the sensor is going bad. Cheap and easy to replace.

Miracle of miracles, my dealer had the part in stock. $35.++. Part is in & done. Easy too. Right above the oil filter. I changed the oil too (even though it really didn't need it yet) & replaced the sender while filter was off. MUCH EASIER this way. 1 1/16" deep well socket with a 4" extension to get past the radiator hose. I also put 2 full wraps of teflon tape---in addition to the stuff on the threads. Part was only $10 online but it was out of stock.

Done.

I had to replace my wife's jeep one a few times. I installed the cheap generic one from parts store. It went bad. So did the next 2. So finally I put in one from dealer. Been good for a long time now. And they really aren't too bad for price

That makes me feel better about the $35 vs the $10 online---but rock auto was out of stock when i checked. Good thing i guess.

I've had that on my PW and Jeep filter since they were new.

But this is even more important for our Locker equipped differentials. It helps to keep the magnets in there cleaner. It also works in the OEM transmission pan (just keep it away from the solenoid packs and wires).
