Wheel hop, axle wrap...

If it's about Power Wagons, all generations, this is where it'll go. This is the original PWR Forum Power Wagon Technical Discussion Section. And this includes everything that doesn’t fit in any one of the other categories related to the truck goes here!

True. That shock isnt gonna help much for hop i wouldnt think. Looks like it was addded to combat wrap. But how the hell can the axle wrap?!

Quit talking about it and video it, its not wrap, it can't be, my front has done what you describe and there's no way it will wrap with upper and lower control arms with solid joints, not factory control arms here. It's hopping which is more than likely tire related.

... And the nice soft, plush, flexy suspension. But yes, low air pressure would definitely help the matter i would believe.

But yes, for the love of God somebody gopro that sheeeeiit!

2wag is the one who go pros everything lol.

Simply put we have a known issue across all generations of trucks. We all agree that it's a pain and can be damaging. Dodge redesigned the rear end to improve ride and claimed load capacity. Some of us think that the KISS system of leaves is still superior to the new design even though there are other ways to design the rear end using multi link that can be tailored to each or our usages. We work with what we got right.

 In my humble, non-college educated mind, one brings on the other. Yes, in my mind, it IS that simple. When the axle wraps, it can only go so far & then it hops back with a loud bang. It repeats this (sometimes very fast) until something breaks, you back off the throttle or tires start spinning faster.

 That's my story & I'm sticking with it !!!

lol I agree with this they seem to be paired together. The twist of the axle causes a hop after it springs back and loses traction plus dodge bushings are never that strong as it is five link or not there's always a ton of play to keep noise levels down and Squeeking to a minimum .

You can see in those videos how much that axle twists on accel it's quite astonishing to see for the first time.

The new Kings have planted mine now, no more wrapping/hopping in soft sand. Mine was apparently due to worn out shocks and no axle control.... just saying...

Yes the motions are similar, and wrap, if violent, coupled with undulating road conditions, will result in vertical movement of the axle in the air, which can be interpreted as hop. However, the kinematics of the two, the instigating mechanical conditions, and the necessitating dynamics resulting in the on-set of both phenomenon, are distinct.

Slow---it's near graduation time, and I've got 3 Master's students I'm trying to graduate, evaluate their thesis research, and still do my other day job, so nights are busy reviewing and editing thesis documents...but I've taken a few measurements under the frame that should work for a mount, then I need to get a drawing of the go-pro so I can design a mount for around it...or I may just be lazy and buy an off-the-shelf mount, and figure a way to bullet proof it to deal with driving under the truck.

With my King 2.5' shocks and airing down my tires to about 20 psi. I almost never get any wheel hop, even in deep snow, sand, mud, etc.

Will the new leafs go to the axle without spacers? That would help reduce some leverage.

apperantly their pretty bad on the diesels for wrapping/ hopping but a lot of those guys seen to not know about airing down??? Strangely enough..... They say it makes traction higher so axle hop worse?

Doesn't look like there's any spacers at all just leafs!

Neener neener I have mine already and someone else broke them in for me so they haven't settled any since I put them on. I love them they are about what a PW offers but much more travel and little or no axle wrap even when running bypass shocks. I love mine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
