If it's still under warrranty, you have the option to take it to the dealer. I don't think you need the whole unit. I know that's how they sell it, but it's possible to possibly just clean it out and put some dielectric grease in there, which is what I've seen others do. Maybe someone else can give you more specifics on this, such as Pit, Russ, Eric, etc.
Warranty is expired or I would have just taken it to the dealership. I have already cleaned it and the magnets in the diffs.

Cruz,

Thanks for the link with the wiring diagram.

I would suck it up and buy the parts if I thought that would resolve the problem indefinitely, but they seem to be problematic. I have already had my Power Wagon to two dealerships on several occassions while still under warranty trying to get the lockers to work properly. I don't want to drop that kind of coin to just have the same problem again in a year or two.

Does anybody know if the proper voltage required at the axle is to make the actuator work or is it for the computer and or switches?
I think we need to talk to Quasimoto over at DT

Checked my pricing... damn! You're better off buying them online because either someone bought them back in the day when they were cheaper or they're actually loosing a lot of money trying to sell it to you. We get some pretty smokin prices on Mopar stuff and even the dealer cost was more than the prices your listing... and that's with a dealer carrying a 6-8 million dollar parts inventory at any point in time!

Quasimoto shows how to do the locker hardwire quite nicely as well. Look at the thread. Looks like the smartbar can be hardwired too. Interesting>>

Hmm. Pit and I were discussing the difference. Apparently it may have something to do with proprietary Mercedes circuits for 06 they may be paying royalty on, where the newer years were changed after the DCX-Mercedes breakup to avoid that or under contract to no longer use it. Kind of like the Apple & Samsung thing. :D

Depends on the year. The 06 bar wasn't that much before DCX broke up.

It's tough to tell what things actually cost from what Dodge/Chrysler charges for them - my previous employer supplied components to them, and I discovered that parts we sold them for $7 were listed at close to $250. And, they didn't even change the packaging!

OTOH, some parts didn't have much markup at all...I never did figure out any rhyme or reason to their pricing. However, I'm guessing that when Dodge was selling the trucks in '06 they probably didn't have much money in the smartbar system...judging by what they paid us for various types of components, I'd be really surprised if it was more than $100. As others have said, perhaps the current replacement price has something to do with licensing, or perhaps issues over who currently has/owns the tooling. A lot of strange stuff goes on behind the scenes...when one of our suppliers went bankrupt, we ended up making a trip to their factory and stealing all our tooling back in the middle of the night. Technically we owned the tooling, but I'm guessing that breaking into a closed-up factory with bolt cutters was a little bit less than legal...or at least it would have been an interesting conversation with the local authorities. :)

Well, my smart bar on my 2011 just bit the bullet. The shorter end somehow ended up slightly pulled out of the locking mechanism. You can see the teeth on the bar and even though the computer thinks it is locked up it isn't. I have a new one going in under warranty tomorrow but just for curiosity sake I will ask how much it would cost if I had to pay for it.

Bet the diameter is different and the length of it isn't long enough to go across the frame.

See if they will let you take it apart for pictures. I'm interested in seeing how that bar pulled out of the gear, and what holds the gear on the bar.

Well, the dealership would not let me take the old smart bar. Said because it was under warranty they are required to send it back to Chrysler.

I got the same answer when mine was replaced. Mine was not under warranty. Guess they still need to figure out how to make the F-nn thing work right even after 7 years of being in production!

I'm sure that is true, but i was thinking of just the actual disconnect part & the plug in. The part that EVO sells for the JEEPS also fits out PW's. Doesn't it ???

Yes it does. So it would only make sense that the mechanism is the same for both?
