3rd Gen or 4th?
3rd Gen or 4th?
Way back in 05 I was gonna buy a brand new QC PW........but then the 1st kid came along suddenly, then I needed a house. Then the 2nd and 3rd followed so there went that idea.
Now I want one again and cant decide which gen to get. although I like the lines of the 4th gen a bit better and the full rear door too. But of course the 3rd gens are much less expensive....
Sooooo, which gens do you guys like better? BTW- I cant afford a brand new one, but could prolly swing an 10 or 11....

Re: 3rd Gen or 4th?
If you weren't worried about the interior room I'd say 3rd because they are a bit better for off-roading. However, at 6'8" I'm more than comfortable in the back seat of the 4th Gen Power Wagon, so for your family situation I'm voting 4th Gen.

Re: 3rd Gen or 4th?
I think if I could get any year I wanted I would get a '13. I didn't like the interiors on the 3rd gens, just something about them looked/felt ugly, plus no room in the back. '14+s are really nice but I'm still not convinced on the coil springs and all the extra crap bolted to the rear axle for that, especially when I tow every now and then, I like the leafs better for towing and off road. That 6.4 is nice, but only 27 more horse I don't think is worth it. ' 13s have the best interior and room in my opinion and still have the leafs and the least amount of electronic nannies with the other better items I mentioned. It's all up to what you use the truck for though.

3rd gen for off road and tight trails (I'm partial to the 09
)
For creature comforts and passenger room the 4G hands down!
I wish they would just get with the program... and invent the transformer already! A 4G in the city but a 2 door Jeep TJ on the trails. One button is all we need LOL.

Re: 3rd Gen or 4th?
Agree with AZ 3rd seems to be better on trails shorter wheel base and better approach angles! 4th gen is a bit better on fuel and trust me with a tuner wow it will turn 37's for a joke!! On regular to boot! I think 3rd gen seats r more comfy personally. Added room in the back is nice but I don't take advantage of it all that much my dogs wouldn't care seems like they want to be right behind the front seats anyways! I'd save the money and jump into a 3rd if your okay with no blue tooth and crazy stereo like the 4th. Save some dough and replace the things that need to be replaced and beefed up anyways like ball joints steering apparatus etc! Maybe even free spin hubs? Just a thought!

Well, having a 14 year old, and a 9 year old, and just going from a 3G to a 4G, I can say this, your kids will be much more comfortable in the crew cab over the quad. And that's likely to be your biggest use. Love the 3G's, want a reg cab someday, but this works for me and my kids.

Re: 3rd Gen or 4th?
Truth be told I like the exterior looks of the gen 3. If I could only add the full doors and interior of the 4th!!
The interior of the 3rd gen is so Spartan and outdated. I need the split front seats for the 6th passenger. And I like my creature comforts too being 50 yrs old and all. ha ha.
I guess the take away is that I'd like either one!! They are very scarce tho the search marches on.

Re: 3rd Gen or 4th?
I've driven my '09 and a pre-production '10 over the same trail on the same day. The 9" difference in wheelbase didn't bother me off road, but the 18' loss of forward visibility did. The hood of the 4th/5th Gen trucks really suck for pure off road use. The '09 may one day be recognized as the best ever due to the combination of the 3rd Gen style and the 4th Gen engine.

Re: 3rd Gen or 4th?
Love my 2014. We are a family of 6 so the cab is great! Hood is harder to see over then my 2004 diesel but I'll get over it. miss my ramcharger as far as wheeling in the bush but that's another story. Lol! 6.4 is nice too. Power is smooth and definitely there when you call on it. I didn't like the 04 hemi halfton I had. The engine had nothing untill 3500 rpm. Thing acted like a 2 stroke! This new hemi is linear and smooth. Now if it just had 150 more foot pounds torque!

Re: 3rd Gen or 4th?
have you looked in Canada at all? I did find a 09 for like 29,000 with power train warranty on it still and a six speed manual when I was looking for my 12' in 2012. Might be worth it to slap it on a train and ship it down. Only if it's from a Chrysler dealer though!Numbnuts wrote:Truth be told I like the exterior looks of the gen 3. Re: 3rd Gen or 4th?
Like others have said all depends on what you are going to do. I purposly went after a 3rd gen becuase they are smaller and more manervable in the woods! Plus i almost crapped myself when i found a standard cab 8ft bed hAha

Re: 3rd Gen or 4th?
i owned an 05 with 35s auto until jan when i traded for 15 tradesman. the 3rd generations were pleasing offroad with the 4.56 gears and shorter wheelbase. The interior i thought was awesome until i sat in a 4th gen. My new truck with 4.10s and bluetooth is like a caddy on the highway. I havnt put the 15 through the ringer offroad like i did the 05 but i do know that if you can find a clean low mileage 3rd gen with the manual then go for it.

I'm biased, I think i got the best of both worlds with my '13 Laramie.
Wouldn't change it for the world.

Re: 3rd Gen or 4th?
I would cast my vote for a 2011. Nice big roomy back seat. 4.56 gears. no nanny controls like traction and stability control. Lots of power. Going from a 2001 Q/C Off-Road to my PW was night and day in terms of power and comfort and off-road ability.

Re: 3rd Gen or 4th?
My thoughts we be around what you are planning to do most with the truck. I do more exploring and camping from the truck in off the grid locations where it's a lot of highway miles in and a bunch of off road miles the rest of the way and back again. The larger and more comfortable cab in my gen 4 meets my needs. That said, there have been times I would have liked to have the better wheeling of a 3 rd gen when things get tight or a little more rock crawling is required. What do you plan to use it for?
2012 - Aluminess sliders, Century High C Shell, Wilderness Rack, Rigid D2's on front bar, sleeping and storage platform, Carli High Clearance Arms, springs, control arm, track bar, Bilstein 7100's, Day star rear shackles, 35" Cooper ST MAXX., Front bumper and under carriage camera set up
Re: 3rd Gen or 4th?
My PW will be Daddy's toy. I will prolly use it for running errands, picking up kids at school, occasionally hauling bulky stuff in the bed and taking the family to places on holidays and such.
Prolly not much off road use except for maybe a trail or two when I take my older boy on an overnight scout trip but that's about it for wheelin".
I'd say not much more than 5k miles per year all told.
