Help me understand Spyntec & RCV

Post by ACRucrazy » Sun Dec 14, 2014 1:23 pm

Thinking of possibly doing a SpynTec conversion and RCV axles in the spring.

Just starting to research this now and feeling rather noobish about it. Hoping you can clarify some things for me.

Looking at this kit.

Image

Part number 1. That is the outer stub shaft that is included with the Spyntec kit correct? 35 spline? OEM is 33 spline from my understanding.

Looking at the RCV axles

I would need RCV axles with a 33 inner spline and 35 outer spline to go with the Spyntec kit if I am understanding this all correctly. Not the 33/33 kit they show on their website (for stock hub kit?)

Thanks!

You're correct. Have you checked out dynatrac's kit? I would ask if it's possible to not include the stub shafts at a lower cost since you won't need them at all if you're putting in RCVs at same time.

I have the RCV axles with the Dynatrac freespin kit. When you order the axles, you have to tell them which freespin kit you have. There could be a difference in the length of the outer stud axle.

I have checked out the Dynatracs and they are a consideration. Your point about not including the stubs were exactly my thought process when I started researching all this. I wouldn't want to pay for some redundant parts if possible.

Thanks for the info!

You also need a 90 deg needle to grease the joints when you need to grease them. The fitting is a bitch to see and get to.

Also when you install them. You have to take a die grinder with a flapper wheel to the area where the old unit bearing fit and clean up that area so that the new joint will slide through. The orange boot that comes with the RCV axles WILL NOT fit through that hole. That means you have to hold the boot in one hand there the old u joint was, and slide the RCV shaft through the knuckle, through the orange boot, into the axle housing. Then you have to make sure that the orange boot is over the new joint.

Are there any negatives to running the RCV on the OEM hubs? I was at one point considering this as an option. I was concerned that high speeds would expand the boot and start slinging grease.

No negatives. The boot will not expand. It's some type of hard plastic. I've had my hubs locked in and was doing 100 mph with no issues. The only problem I've had with the RCV axles is greasing them. You have to remove the tires, turn the steering wheel all the way to one side. Rotate the axle and wipe the bearing housing off, trying to find the grease fitting.

Yup,
When running a free spin kit you would need to get the 35 spline outers with the RCV shafts. And like Rusty said the length on the outer shaft will also need to be longer than the normal 33/33 spline versions.

Dynatrac can supply the lengths needed and/or RCV will know what to build if you tell them your plans.

I know that you weren't planning on doing anything until spring but Dynatrac has the Free Spin kits on sale for $100 off until the end of December and we offer free shipping on them as well. With the RCV's being more popular option these days we can take the outer shafts out of the Free Spin kits and take $230 off of the retail price.

I emailed RCV, Dynatrac & SpynTec on Sunday. Only RCV followed up with me on Monday.
I will try again later. Thanks again for the info! Maybe I will bite on Dynatrac a bit early, but with a new house, appliances, carpet etc and Xmas. funds are dedicated to other places at this time.
