Traded in my 2011 for a 2014

Post by JBM Power Wagon » Mon Aug 25, 2014 12:07 am

Well, I bit the bullet and did it!!! Just over a month ago I decided to check out what the 2014's were going for and ended up dealing with a very good dealer. I was 100% honest with them and let them know I wasn't really interested in getting rid of my 2011 and would only consider it if the deal made financial sense over the long run. I use my PW for work so that really helps in justifying a new truck fairly often. But, I had become quite emotionally attached to my 2011. It was out of warranty and one thing I always regretted was not getting an extended warranty with it. The dealer came back with one deal but it just wasn't good enough. About 2 weeks later they contacted me again and were willing to do some more negotiating. Here is what I ended up with:

-They threw in a 5yr/160,000km extended bumper to bumper warranty for their cost (the standard warranty in Canada is 3yr/60,000km bumper to bumper and 5yr/100,000km power train).
-They threw in a set of Airlift Loadlifter 5000 air bags. I have already ordered the Daystar cradles and will do the install myself.
-They gave me what I owe on my 2011, which is really good considering I have a decent amount of bush pin striping and a few dents.
-They are deferring the payments for the first 6 months. I will just sock away they money and either put it right back on the truck or use it for other stuff.
-They will put my 315/70/17 Kelly Safari TSR tires on the new truck. They only have around 26,000km on them and after putting that tire size on I won't' ever go back. When I test drove a new 2014 PW it looked like the bigger tires should fit well. They will also recalibrate the speedo for me. The only thing they haven't confirmed yet is what the TPMS will do as with the bigger tires I run at 42psi max. They are looking into if they can adjust the warning threshold.
-They are letting me take all of my mods off of my 2011. I am going to use my tonneau cover on the 2011. I am selling my Airiad CAI, my Hellwig LoadPro helper springs and my Myoung locker bypass (I will post the locker bypass in the classifieds at a later date). I am going to keep the BullyDog for now as I called them and they said they are working on the 2014 Rams.

For the 2014, I am getting a Blue Streak SLT, just about fully loaded with just about everything except NAV and Rambox. Some of the key options include rear camera, park assist sensors, rear window defrost, trailer tow mirrors, power sunroof, 8.4 radio head unit, heated seats and steering wheel, remote start, security system, 9 speakers with sub, and spray in bed liner. When I did the deal on Saturday the truck had literally just dropped in Edmonton at the rail yard. It should be at the dealer by Wednesday or Thursday but because of a camping trip I won't be picking it up until Tuesday September 2nd. Once I get it I will definitely post up some pics.

As for mods, I won't be doing too much to start but here is the list (most I am just moving from my 2011):
-Airlift Loadlifter 5000 air bags with the Daystar cradles
-315/70/17 Kelly Safari TSR tires
-Cobra CB radio
-Wilson cell phone booster
-Truxedo Lo Pro QT Tonneau Cover
-Quick Fist clamps to mount my high lift jack and shovel in the bed
-Fire extinguisher mounted in the bed
-Magnaflow muffler (likely a 22")

Down the road I may do the following but it will depend on future funds:
-Paint the bumpers and the grill black
-Some aftermarket black wheels
-Rock sliders
-Levelling kit
-Bully Dog (I have it already so we will see if they come out with 2014 6.4L tunes soon)
-Cold air intake

Once I have the truck for a couple of months I will post my thoughts on how it performs vs my 2011. I will be taking the new truck hunting in early October so I will get the chance to tow my travel trailer with the bed full (quad, generator, gas, chainsaw, hopefully moose meat) and also do some decent off roading.

Congratulations
Considering all that you've told us about your 2011, I think it's the perfect time to trade. I think you got one helluva a deal.

If u don't mind me asking what did the numbers look like? I'm looking at a 2014 Laramie PW. Sticker is right around $60k and I can get approximately a 17% discount off of that price, cash deal, no trade. I understand if you'd rather keep your info private.

Sounds like an interesting upgrade. I look forward to seeing how it compares to the 2011.

I will be looking to see if the connections are the same. I am a little worried to plug it in though, don't want to fry any electronics on the new truck. MYoung, what do you think? If the connections are the same would I be safe to test it out?

If that's in Canadian dollars that is a steal of a deal!!!! Dealer invoice on my SLT was around $54000 Canadian, which is right about what I paid. Only reason they could do that and throw in some of the extras is the GM of the dealership used some of the volume rebate they get at the end of each year.

Exactly my question too. If my 2010 bypass fits on the 2014 and the airbags will help out with getting a bit more out of the loading capacity, I'll be after a 2014 soon too.

I pulled up the wiring info (wasn't available last time I looked) and the connector under the hood is the same. There are slight wiring changes but it shouldn't affect operation. They are now running two CANBUS wires though the harness on pins 5 and 10. Pin 5 on the older trucks is empty, however, I went ahead and ran a wire though for the hell of it so it will just pass straight through. The other wire on pin 10 that's now CANBUS (-) used to be the sway bar engage light, so I'm not sure what they are doing there. I'm assuming that if it's not disengaged that it's assumed engaged? Whatever they are doing shouldn't matter anyways since this is just another pass through wire on my harness. From what I can tell, it should also be in the same location.

Now what I don't know is, since they are now running CANBUS through this harness, is what the truck's computer will think when you plug up this foreign module. I just don't know what exactly they are monitoring that they weren't before. I'm 99.9% sure that you won't fry anything when you install it, but there's always the chance of triggering on of the many lights or errors on the dash. If it were my truck, I'd give it a shot with just the underhood harness, power, and ground hooked up. Twist the locker knob and listen for the relays clicking and the LEDs indicating properly. If all of this works, then you'll be good to go.

Cool, thanks for looking up the wiring!!! I'm honestly still nervous about testing it but I will see if I can work up the nerve. Your bypass kit is one of the best mods I have ever put on any vehicle so I would love to have it on the new truck.

Awesome! Good for you, congrats on the great deal, welcome to the growing 2014 crew!

I'm on the MYoung bypass list, so I'll be interested to see what you find out when you try it. Since everything electric is running the CANBUS protocol, it's reasonable to believe if you connect the main bypass bus+12V+ Grnd , pull into 4Hi, & activate the lockers, you should see if the relays open sending Pwr to the lockers.

No, none of the dealer ordered 2014's are coming with the the dual alternator set ups. That's the only option I wish I could have got but I didn't want to do a factory order. I am going to ask if you can upgrade to that set up and how much that would cost. Although the factory 180 amp unit on my 2011 always did what I needed. I use my winch but usually don't end up in situations where I am using it super hard.

Finally got the truck!!! So far I have only managed to install the tonneau cover and put all my tools and gear into all of the storage bins. One bit of GREAT news, the 315/17/17 tires fit awesome!!! No rubbing even when turning full lock left or right! The test will be when articulating but so far so good! This picture isn't the best but on the weekend I will post more.

Sweet. Can you take a better straight on pics of the 35" tires in daylight? I want to go 35'" Duratracs when the stock 33" Duratracs are ready to be recycled. Did the dealer reprogram the speedometer, odometer, and trip odometers?

Adeluca73:
You bet, I am travelling for work but at some point I will get more pictures up in better light. The dealer bought a Hypertech speedo calibration programmer to reprogram the truck for the larger tires, then gave me the Hypertech and said "I guess you get to keep this"!!! I checked it with my GPS and it is around 3kph off (I had the cruise set at 110kph and GPS said I was doing 107kph) so when I have time I will try to get it closer. I did get the tow mirrors and I also had them on my 2011. I tow my travel trailer A LOT in the spring, summer and fall so they were a must. They do stick out a little but also fold in with not much effort if you bump them up against a tree when squeezing down tight trails. :)

I agree on the "sexy" comment! The more I look at it the more I LOVE the Blue Streak paint color! I'm even starting to like how the graphics look on this color scheme. As we were driving home from the dealer my 8 year old son was telling me how multiple people on the road were checking out my truck. Haha!
Loving my 3/4 ton version of my old Jeep TJ!!!!!
