I really hate salesmen

Post by shaner82 » Tue Apr 15, 2014 11:32 am

I e-mailed a local dealership recently inquiring about the best price he could give me on a 2014 Power Wagon. I told him I had a 2013 so I probably wasn't buying one, but that if the price was good enough, I would strongly consider it. I told him exactly what I wanted and with what options.

He e-mailed me back right away asking if I wanted a regular cab, quad cab or crew cab. I knew right then that he didn't know jack about the trucks he sells. Anyway, I answered him and told him crew cab just to get things moving.

He then e-mailed me back and told me he built the truck I wanted, but he built it with the diesel engine and he wanted to know if I wanted diesel or gas. He also asked me what I meant by the ramboxes as he didn't know what those were. I explained what the Rambox was and told him the diesel PW doesn't exist. He insisted he built it with the diesel

So frustrating. I wish we could just build our trucks from the website and avoid the middle man altogether. I just want to get a price right from Chrysler and possibly buy right from Chrysler and avoid these people that know nothing about the trucks they sell. It's so frustrating.

I went to my local dealer with a print out of my built PW summary and said I wanted to order this truck. The guy takes it and without even looking at it starts walking to the lot and talking about what he had on the lot. I said unless you just happen to have that truck hiding somewhere, you don't have it and will need to order it. He insisted on me looking at what they had in stock and they didn't have the first PW in stock let alone the one I wanted. I stopped him and asked for the manager right then. He asked why and did he do something wrong. I laughed and said just let me speak to someone that will order this truck today. We went into the sales managers office and I grabbed the summary from the salesman's hands and handed it to the manager and said I want this truck. He looked it over and said, I have one very similar to this out back. I asked if it had the Power Wagon package and he said no. Beginning to get mad I said well order this one. Then he goes on telling me how long it will take, long story short they kept trying to sell me something they had in stock and I told them to go somewhere and went to a dealer an hour from me. That dealer went straight to the computer looked for about 5 minutes and printed out a summary of one exactly like the one I wanted except it had an upgraded radio, carpet in the floor and a sliding rear power window at another dealer about 30 minutes away. So I was able to get the truck I wanted to order that day! They got me for life and I've bought 4 vehicles from them since.

I only do what the majority of the 4 voices in my head tell me to. In most cases, I ignore two of them because one doesn't speak English, and I suspect the other is talking to someone else.

I had some bad service issues with my dealer with my 04 2500. When i ordered my 08', i asked for the owner. At that time, it was the oldest family owned Dodge dealer in the entire United States. Hawley Motors in Batavia NY. It was a small dealer. I asked the owner if he knew what a Power Wagon was. He replied, yes i do. I asked if he ever sold one, he said yes. I asked when they sold the last one, he said 1954 & his dad sold it. I KNEW i was talking to the right guy then. I asked if he knows about the new PW's, he said yes. I asked if he wanted to sell & order one today, he said yes. So, I told him he has to give me maximum coin for my 04 2500 on a trade w/26,000 miles & minimum mark-up on the new one for me to afford it. They drove my 04, said they would give me $18,900 on a trade & my payments would be xxx.00 a month. Done deal. So he was going through the options with me, blah blah blah, then i thought i heard the angles sing !!!!! , he said "do you want an auto or a 6-speed manual ?" I said WHAT, did you say a 6-speed manual ? He said yup. It was like the world stopped for a second & trumpets sounded. I asked exactly WHAT 6-speed was it ? He said G56. I told him to wait, i gotta go home & research it & get the gear ratios. He asked why & i told him my 04 2500 w/hemi & 4.10's SUCKED for pulling my camper & that it was geared all wrong for HD work. It would either be screaming in 2nd or lugging in 3rd just to maintain the speed limit on flat ground & constantly hunting for a gear. And that the new PW's had 4.56's in the axles. An hour later I went back to the dealer & signed the papers for the PW w/G56. It works EXCELLENT for pulling the same camper with the 4.56's & manual trans. This is why i always say that "not everybody needs a diesel, they just need a gas engine with a properly geared trans." When i was a kid, we pulled a camper not much lighter than the one i have now, WITH A STATION WAGON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! With no issues.

He since sold the dealer & it is now called Castilone Dodge/Jeep. They got off to a REALLY bad start with me. They have since fired almost everyone they first hired & my last service experience with them was fantastic. Hope that continues.

Keep in mind that dealer volume plays a part in willingness to order, some dealers get allocated certain models. Say they order a power wagon or say viper they may have to take another one that they may sit on forever or get sent x amount of another vehicle they may not be able to sell easy? For some dealers it's not worth the risk. That's how it was explained to me anyway?

I ended up driving 600 miles to pick up my Power Wagon because of how bad the local sales guys were to me. I'm just glad our local service department is really good, otherwise I'd be in a Chevy (or local Ford Service Department is freaking scary bad).

It really depends on the dealership. They can make more money with what they have in stock over ordering something. If the dealer doesn't want to work with you, then go somewhere else. Our Durango we bought new in 2008. I found it on line at an in state dealership. I called the dealership up and the salesman would not deal with me on the phone. I wasn't driving 3 hours to do something that could be done over the phone. I hung up and called another dealer 3 hours away in an other direction. I told the saleslady what I was looking for. She called back and told me they found the vehicle I wanted. I gave her our trade-in information and confirmed numbers over the phone. The next day we went and signed the papers and low and behold the vehicle we purchased was the one from the other dealership that wouldn't deal with me over the phone. I bought my PW over the phone as well. I know the owner of the dealership and called him up. I was initially looking at ordering a new ST Powerwagon. The dealer was was driving a 2010 PW for a demo. I had looked at his demo and liked it though I wasn't wanting all the bells and whistles the SLT PW's have. I was able to get a lifetime warranty on the 2010 with only 26,000 miles and two years old. That and it saved me several thousand dollars over a new one. The deal was made over the phone and I went and picked it up later in the week. My credit score is over 800, I make deals over the phone. If they don't want to deal with me on fair terms I go somewhere else.

Bought my PW over the phone, then flew 400 miles to pick it up, relatively painless. Bought a new Toyota over the phone locally, but to get that deal done I wound up yelling at the kid at the dealer that I wasn't looking to get married, I just wanted to buy the car and have it ready when I got there. Reminded him that a Toyota is just an effin' appliance and I had no emotional attachment to it.

Have had the PW for over eight years and my local dealer has still never seen one other than mine. They tell me that every time I go in to buy the odd part.

I drove 660 miles to pick mine up as well. I didn't want a new one because I couldn't afford it, but went to the local dealer to price one anyway for curiousity. They didn't even know how to price one or build one to my specs. I asked them to look for a nice used one to fit in my price range, after two weeks they finally said they found one and sent me pictures. It wasn't even a power wagon. Was a regular 2500 with power wagon badges.
Shoot the dealer I bought mine off of didn't even know what it was. But I got lucky that the Internet sales manager knew what they had so I delt with him and him alone.
Was very nervous buying it over the phone because of the fact that very few people know the differences between a power wagon and a regular 2500.

I was looking at an 09 1500 at the local dealer, said they had to check on a check engine light it had, call them in a couple days. Called back and they said they had it fixed and I could look at it the next day, took off time from work to go look at it and found out they sold it the previous day. "Anything else you want to look at?" Thanked them for wasting my time and walked out.
Found my 09 PW at a dealer about a 100 miles away, not as many bells and whistles as the 1500, roughly the same mileage and price plus they kept it till the weekend for me so I could go look at it. Drove it home the same day. It's twice the truck the 1500 was.

I went and ordered my Laramie Power Wagon (Granite Crystal) on Friday the 11th. It was pretty painless since I have been dealing with the sales gal for almost a year, I called her on April 2th and told to sell her sales manager that on April 7th I can order the PW. I called her on the 7th and she yes I could order, but they are going fast. Anyway when I went in the sales manager started asking what options I wanted and asked if I wanted the luxury group, My response "The Laramie has that" his response "they don't make a Laramie PW" disagreement started so I grabbed his monitor turned it around and pointed at the 22J PW option. Then he asked me if I wanted the 220 amp alternator, I responded I want dual alternators. His reply" you can only get those with the 6.4 L" you all no my response to that, so then he says " yes the PW has a 6.4 L but do to weight restrictions they don't put dual alternators on the PW and besides around this country a 220 is more than enough" Another disagreement occurred and I argued until he called his boss who also said "No dual alternators" , I continued to argue until he called Chrysler and discovered the power wagon can handle the extra weight of another alternator. There were a couple other small "funny" disagreements. The worst part of it is that our dealer knows what a power wagon is and sells a lot of them . Our area in S.W. Wyoming has a lot of them running around.

My experience was very different. The local dodge dealership put the power wagon on the lot right beside the red light I have to drive by everyday to work. Without my knowledge my boss set the deal up to a point I couldn't refuse. I walked into the dealership on my early day off. The owner's son came out handed me the keys and said the power wagon has to go and we're prepared to give you 5000 off sticker, we've been talking to your boss. They said the only catch is that you have to get rock rails and accessories that go with the power wagon. Somehow the paper work was done about an hour after the test drive. I was driving a power wagon before I even had a chance to drop a word with my wife. Funniest part is the dealership did their official picture on red carpet after installing the rock rails. It was a Monday and the truck was no longer a trail virgin. The detailers and mechanics went nuts saying the outside was all scratched up and they didn't do it!

I must've got lucky on mine. Went to a local dealer that my dad had went to several times and got one found and priced all in one 2 hour sitting. I also got lucky on the salesman because he owned a lifted Jeep and knew all about the PW and was jealous of me to an extent. I also went to another local dealer that was a 2 story dealer with a basketball court indoor and bunch of people running around everywhere and NONE of them knew what the PW was or hardly anything about it. They had one on there lot 1 week before hand but sold it. So they tried doing the same thing to me as they did to you guys and selling me a 1500 Sport, then a 6.7 Laramie Cummins dually. Then after they ran me around the dealer 20 times trying to get me to buy another truck on the lot and then finally trying to get me to pay 50k on the same PW that I priced at 45k at the other dealership I told them they just lost a customer because I could get that same truck for 45k at another dealership and they said "Well we just can't go that low" I said goodbye and walked out.

If they were deep thinkers, most of them would not be selling cars. When I bought my PW over the phone, the sales guy had a degree in microbiology from UC Davis but I didn't know it until I flew in to pick up the truck. Asked him why he was selling cars with that degree in his pocket. He said he just liked cars and trucks. Bingo!

I love stupid salesman and sales managers, when I found my PW I was actually at the dealership checking on an engine problem with my Dakota. Killing time I was walking around the lot and in back I spotted a PW. Some guy named Robert S. Herbert had ordered it fully loaded and in the color that would have been my first choice. To make a long story short, he didn't take delivery and I negotiated a hell of a deal on it. Being only 30 miles away from lots of dealerships around the San Francisco Bay Area, and armed with prices on non PW 2500's coupled with the fact that they didn't know what they had, IMO I got one great deal.

So while the truck was getting the oil changed I went in search for a Jeep Grand Cherokee brochure. Talked to a nice salesman, probably 24 years old or so. I asked about the Grand Cherokee Trail Hawk and he said there was no such thing, just in the Cherokee. When I asked if it was discontinued he told me they never made the Trail Hawk in the Grand Cherokee. At that point I thanked him for his time and walked off. It appears that the Trail Hawk is no longer an option (it's not on Jeep.com) but still really irritates the piss out of me when I know more than a sales person.
