How do you remove the locker connector

Post by leo72987 » Fri Apr 04, 2014 7:50 pm

Hey guys I'm replacing the harness on the front axle of my 2005 power wagon. I found the issue but I already broke one connector trying to remove the red tab..... How are you supposed to remove it? I can't install the connector with it in place.

Be very careful here. I broke the plastic housing that comes out of the axle on my '13PW when I was installing my locker bypass kit. The only way to repair it was to buy the entire actuator from MOPAR ($466), drain the rear diff and replace the actuator. I'm not sure what problem you are having exactly with your connector or if the 05 and 13 are even the same. Just some friendly advice.

Push the red tab up towards the end of the connector. Then the black tab at the end should be pushed down and the plugs pulled apart. I just installed my bypass today and took my time. I used a screwdriver to slide the red taB forward. You can see the little track it slides in. But yeah... Be careful. And I understand :nopics: but I don't got none. Sorry

The red tab slides back and there is a button to press on the connector to release it. There's not much clearance so it's a pain in the ass. I found using a small flat head screw driver helps to simotainiosly press the release and slide it out.

It is a PIA. Both of mine broke, so I took the plastic "guts" out of the connector and cut some solid plastic pieces that will slide in and hold with friction. Works much better.

Just don't do what I did with the screwdriver pry method and "let the sparks fly"!! disconnect the battery first! $3000 mistake.

Re: How do you remove the locker connector

I know this is a bit of an old thread but I was wondering if there is any more information on the best way to remove these connectors.
Are you guys removing the cover around the connector for better access? Are they all the same or are the 4G axles different?

I can't seem to slide the red tab to unlock the connector and have already broke the red tab on the front. I don't want to do the same in the rear but I can't figure out how to disconnect them with the limited access available.
Anyone have access to a 4G service manual that might explain the "correct" method to disconnect the locker connector at the axles?

Thanks in advance.

Not sure how big you are (I'm 6', 200 lbs) but I was able to slide on my back from the rear of the truck, under the axle and then sit up right next to the third member and gas tank. Then, you can work the connector from the front of the axle instead of messing with that cover.

I found by spraying the connector real good with WD-40 helps wash it and also helps the red lock slide backwards. Once you slide the red lock backwards, there's a black finger tab directly under where the red lock was when it was closed. Push the black tab down and pull it apart.

I'll load up some photos in a couple of minutes...

Alright, here's a couple of pictures that might help. This is my old plug with a plug in the end after installing myoungs bypass kit. As you can see, I broke the red lock off of this one but didn't care because I wasn't going to use it any longer and frankly, I think it would be fine without it. Let me know if you need some different angles but this should help.

In this picture, the arrow is pointing at the finger tab that you need to push down to release it, you can see the remains of the red lock, if the red lock was still there, it would be to the left of the arrow towards my fingers to allow access to the tab underneath.

Image

This one just shows the other side of the finger tab catching the male portion.

Image

Here's the female end once removed, you can see the tab inside, when you push down on the other end, this end goes up releasing the lock.

I find that spraying the connector with WD-40 and letting is soak for about 15 minutes helps a lot in getting it to come apart with breakage.

Thanks Will and Coder for the pictures and WD-40 tip.
My problem is getting my figures around the connector guard to get at the red tab to unlock. I think that once I get it unlocked I should be able to push the release tab with a finger or small screwdriver and disconnect it.
And the fact that I broke the lock tab off the front connector is going to make removal that much more frustrating.

If it helps to after I snapped off the red tab the connector still wouldn't budge.... It was caked up with all the New England salt, dirt, dust, etc... I ended up using a flat head on the connector piece to push down and another small flat head between the connector housing to pry out. This loosened the connector and didn't break anything.

Just thought I would update the thread and post that spraying WD-40 on the connector loosened everything up and the connector easily came apart. Thanks Coder.
