Tires

Post by verdesardog » Fri Mar 14, 2014 9:31 am

!!$@%%!#$ new tires are making my truck ride like a horse. Have been balanced three times in a week now, they have less then 10k miles on them, dealer said they will give me 20% credit to replace them with the same type. Continental Geolandar's. I'm not doing it, I'm getting A/T KO's and hope they are a better tire for my needs. Dealer thinks airing down made the belts shift inside the carcass.... :box:

I actually like the BFG A/T KO's in everything but mud & deep snow. Now that they make them in a load range E, I may get another set of them myself. I just want 35's.

I have gone through a bunch of sets of BFG AT/KOs and now that I have switched to Toyos, I'm never going back o BFGs unless they are really cheap. Had Toyo MT 35s on the PW and when they wore out I put on a set of Toyo AT-IIs in 35. Really happy with the Toyos. The used Tundra that I am picking up tomorrow (I hope) has a fresh set of AT-IIs on it and that is one of the reasons I'm buying that truck to replace my old GMC. The GMC is going on down the road with what will probably be my last set of BFGs. That truck had BFG AT and AT/KOs in 33", 35", and back to 33". Good tires but I really prefer the Toyos.

I have to say I love my Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx tires they generally all come in Load E and their biggest size is 285/70R17. I have beat these things in the rocks and such and have done great. They are also pretty good in the snow have not tested them in the mud.

Don't do it Michael. You won't like the BFG's. They chunk way too easily for a truck of our weight. The tread is too tight as it were, the blocks too small, and tear off with the torque you have.

Take a look at the Toyo AT2 XTreme in the 285/75-17 size. I've had the 35/12.5-17 size on the truck for a full year now, and can say they have exceeded my expectations.

I'm with the others on the Toyo AT II's. I know a bunch of guys who are running them, and as soon as my stock tires die I'll be putting them on my truck.

I just got a set of Nitto trail grapplers a week ago. I've done little offroading so far but onroad they have been extremely smooth! 2 out of four have 1 ounce balance on them(37X12.5's). Keep in mind I had square iroks on the truck before these. The guys at 4wheelparts talked me into them. They clamed excellent ride, a good mud tire and very resistant to chunking on trails. I can tell you they clean out properly in mud but not much more offroad.

They are great on the highway. But they are not very good in mud and they work well in rocks but chunk REAL bad! Sorry for this news. I have a set and have huge chunks missing out of them. Good luck and they do wear good and last a long time.

The set of Nitto's I had got the dreaded left pull after 15K or so. Never had a problem when new, but as they wore, the pull got progressively worse. Great traction - I'd say they were a close second to the MT/R as far as that goes.

At least it's not a full price hop. FWIW, when I had 35" BFG AT/KOs on the IFS GMC, I had an incredible simulation of death wobble at 40-45mph. Tires looked fine, but after several wheel balancings, tire rotations and alignments, the tire shop said I had a bad set of tires. Changed to a fresh set of BFGs and the problem went away. The early PWs ('05s) had a run of BFGs that supposedly contributed to DW and I think some were replaced under warranty. What does the tire shop say about your problem (other than that the truck is not a PW)?

Note to self: Never, EVER, admit to "airing down" for off road use if a tire issue pops up. Dealers look for ANY reason to blame the customer for their faulty product.

Are you SURE it is the tires ? Just asking.

Just wondering what is going on with my 2012 PW with 28K miles. I installed 35x12.5r17 BFG KO2 tires on new set of rims. Michelin / BFG has replaced all 4 because of wheel hp and shake at several speeds on road. I never had this issue on old compound factory BFG's. Now Michelin in having Kauffman order 4 more for replacement. Is this tire related or suspension in your opinions. By the way Kauffman/Discount Tires/and a local tire company Butler Tire in ATL have all taken a stab at balancing. Butler even did balance on the vehicle. Ideas?

Could be a few different issues.

I ran into an issue once where the tire balancer machine was way off & calibrated wrong. Tire shop swore it was cause my truck had 80,000+ miles on it & said all my u-joints were bad. Replaced all 7 of them, same issue. Went to a different shop, they rebalanced them & problem solved. They showed me that 3 of the 4 tires were off by 1oz on 1, to 4 oz off on the worse one---before he took the old weights off. They were actually better with no weights at all, than after the first place balanced the new tires.

Could be some of the components are worn, but at only 28k, i doubt it very much. I would start with the cheapest thing first. Take them to another tire shop & tell them you want them to put them on the balance machine BEFORE they take the weights off, just to verify that it is not the other places tire machine that is out of whack.

Thanks TwinStick. It's been through 4 tire shops now. Michelin has contacted Kauffman's to order 4 more at no cost. I assume they think it's the tires? So these next four will make 12 tires totsl.. Everything points to the tires, but it's funny. Some people are saying that All Terrains do this. You have to expect it...etc. But the last set of old compound TA KO radials handled very smooth. Oh well. We'll see./ Fred

I know that NO ONE in the industry will admit this, but i swear they make bad tires, know it & sell them anyways to unsuspecting shops & truck manufacturers. It is cheaper in the long run to entertain the few lawsuits that even make it that far, then it is to throw away 1/3 of their product. I have just known too many people that have the same issues over & over & over, even on brand new trucks & cars, for it all to be coincidences.

I think you are correct. I used to run Dunlop Radial Rover RVs and Mud Terrains and I got a few of them over the years that were damn near square. I was fortunate to have a local shop that would acknowledge and take care of the issue. I suspect they were eating it though rather than Dunlop taking care of it.

Apparently, these tires were specifically designed for heavy, full-size, offroad trucks (specifically diesel 4x4's). They weren't designed for smaller vehicles, then adapted to larger sizes (keeping the same compounds). The rubber compound used is likened to tractor-trailer tires. This allows them to hold up to the weight, heat, and abuse an 8,000+ lb truck would put them through. They're relatively new to the market, so it'll be interesting to see how they do. While most offroad tires start in smaller sizes (for the Jeep and Jeep-like market), then gradually get produced in larger sizes, these tires began as a design specifically for heavy offroad vehicles.

Saw those the other night on Diesel Brothers show. Suppose to be tougher than regular tires aimed at diesel/heavy duty world. Thought they were made by federal tires though

OK. 12 Tires have been in play on this 2012 PW. BFG TA KO2 35x12.5r17
Unfortunately the wheel hop continues. I admit that this third set is a little better, but no cigar. :excited:
Michelin will not offer refund. Only new tires. They actually suggested I try selling the tires and wheels on Ebay. Of course if that happens I'm definitely going to get a different brand. Anyone want a set of tires and Rims? Seriously tho ...Is there a way to check my shocks? Before I drive home tonight I'm going to 45 PSI in all 4 just to see what happens.
