Tire width vs wheel width
Anyone have a little information on a good rule of thumb for the proper wheel width for a particular tire width? I've been running 12.5" wide tires on stock 8" PW wheels for a while with no problems but was wondering if I could run a 13.5" wide tire on the stock wheels or if I should upgrade to a wider wheel with a wider tire? Thanks

Re: Tire width vs wheel width
Almost all of the major tire manufacturers will have rim width recommendations on their web site. Look up the specs for the exact tire you are considering and they will provide the range of recommend rim widths for that tire, and will also provide the inflated dimensions and revs per mile for that tire on a specific rim width. With that info you can do a little interpolation to figure out how the tire will fit on your rim. I have often run fat tires on somewhat narrow rims because I did not want to buy new wheels. The only real issue if you don't get too extreme is that at higher pressures the tires will wear in the center. Keep the pressures down most of the time and you will usually be OK.

Nice, thanks...yeah Interco's website has 8.5" as the lowest but like you said should work on a 8" wide wheel...just might run into wear issuesDucky's Dad wrote:Almost all of the major tire manufacturers will have rim width recommendations on their web site. Yeah she was strangely ok with it, especially once I convinced her what a good deal they were. They were actually at a Discount Tire that came off a hummer limousine after about 50 miles when they realized they rubbed with people in it, if anyone is around Colorado Springs they said they have another set of 37x12.5x17's they're trying to get rid of.

13.5's on an 8" rim is what we call a poor man's bead lock. They worked great for rock crawling at 4 to 6 psi.

Re: Tire width vs wheel width
Just stick em on!!!! I'd only start widening rim if you hit a 14.5 or 15" wide tire honestly. A 13.5 isn't that much different like the main man said! Poor mans bead lock. Will only stay on there better when low. I can't see it honestly affecting tire wear or stability in the tire itself that's all dependent on tire pressure. Just do it if you like the factory wheels...if you don't...then it's an excuse to by another set

Re: Tire width vs wheel width
Yeah, I don't need to put them on for a while...so I'll keep an eye out for a new set of wheels but I'm not holding my breath for a decent price coming up on a set of walker evans, so if worse comes to worse I'll just mount them on the stock wheels.
