Re: Power Wagon Picture Thread
here's some pics from wheeling at Uwharrie this past Friday! Went with two buddy's of mine, one brought his FJ-80, the other rode with. It was really wet with all the rain we have been getting! The trails were almost entirely greasy clay mud! My (m)all terrains packed up like racing slicks. Definitely will not go wheeling out there in the wet again until my MTRK's are on. I seemed to have not but three travel modes- sliding downhill with my steering input merely being a suggestion not a command, pegging the rev limiter and bouncing off things while trying to climb hills, or stuck and winching. Still had fun though!
This was how slick it was (notice the tire packed full of clay and the 6 foot arc of sliding!):
/url]
There was one particular hill where I slid back down to the bottom whilst still in drive with my wheels spinning trying to get to the top! I also got familiarized with a very undesirable thing- front axle hop! (whilst trying to spin the mud off the tires to get traction on rocks) About got stuck a couple times whilst trying to do the locker shuffle since my diff locks were not always willing to engage as needed.
Had to use the winch to get up an entire section of trail. Kind of humbling side note: my anchor for the winching was a TJ Rubicon that was making his way up the trail just fine. (mud tires) Had to get him ahead of me, use his winch to anchor him in place (since else wise I would have just pulled him down to where I was! (that was why we couldn't use my buddy's rig as an anchor) Yup, had to get recovery help from a Jeep! Still, it was MY winch recovering me! it worked like a champ! Pulled me about 200' up the trail (stopped and moved the Jeep and reran the winch's cable a few times) with no thermal issues. Big challenge was trying to match wheel speed to winch speed since the winch needed a little help from the truck on occasion. Anyways, here's a stuck pic (it doesn't look like much but, 4" of greasy clay mixed with rocks and all terrains= forward motion ceases! Also, this looks like I am aimed downhill but, it is actually an uphill section, just a weird camera angle):
The rock sliders get a good workout, I need a better breakover angle! Here's a pic of them nearly kissing the top of a even a small berm:
/url]
I sure am glad I have them though, at one point when winching, I had to go around a bit of a corner and didn't think I was cutting it as close as I was, I pivoted the entire truck around the corner on a rock under the passenger slider! I also slid my truck sideways several times (no traction) pinging my sliders off rocks, trees, and berms. If I hadn't had sliders, I am not 100% sure I would have been able to open my door at the end of the day! The driver's side feels a little loose after having acted as a pivot point though so, looks like I need to frame mount them! (my sliders are rocker mounted Aluminess sliders, my pinch welds to my rockers are getting a bit tweaked from mashing the rock sliders so much but, the sliders have still prevented a LOT worse damage that could have been the result of my driving by braille, LOL!) Here's a pic of the driver's side (the mud covers the gouges I put in it!):
/url]
Lastly, here's a pic of my buddy's Land Cruiser! His success (not a stuck all day!) is a testament to his driving skill, the Cruiser's capability, and very handily illustrates the prowess gained when one has mud terrains (35" Kumho's in his case) instead of all terrains. He has open diffs front and rear and was still able to go where I could not (even with my truck locked front and rear) because his tires could eject the mud and bite!!!

I think my nav system was a little confused. We were at least 10 miles off the "unpaved road".

Going up the Bally Shasta Trail ( see data in upper left corrner)

Top of the Bally Peak Note Altitude

Some manzanita provided trail striping from the last 100 yards to the peak

looking forward to more runs like this i loved the drive didn't see much of the scenery till i got to the top. The giggles and ohhs and ahhs from the passengers, let me know there was lots of fun bouncing around and seeing what the trail offered
Some friends ill be visiting in early november

Re: Power Wagon Picture Thread
Did a little exploring right outside of Kirtland AFB this weekend, some great trails. Pictures make a mole hill out of mountain, luckily we found another way down the dune...the trail portion ended in about a 5 foot drop from a wash out. My buddy next to the truck for reference. Right before this we pulled two very stuck vehicles out of an arroyo, a 1st gen dodge was up to its bumper and a suburban got stuck trying to pull him out. Winched em both out no problem, wish we had a chance to take some pictures but there was a good size monsoon making its way towards us so time was of the essence to get out of the arroyo.

Re: Power Wagon Picture Thread
Drove out to Choke Cherry canyon today to see if the water was flowing down the arroyo again, from all the rain. Passed by this little mud hole left over from the rain a few days ago. The wife says, "Can we do some donuts in the mud?".
Couldn't resist!
My wife only took a few pics (I thought she was taking video), before we started hitting the deeper stuff. There were a few other trucks out there playing around along the edges (Jeep GC, Ford F-250, Chevy 1500 and 2500 dually), but once we rolled in and I stomped on the throttle the first time, they all pulled out, parked and watched. Got a bunch of screams and thumbs up. It was AWESOME!
Didn't get any pics of the deeper stuff or of the final result, but it sure was fun!
