Easiest way to get 35's on 4th gen

Post by silver13 » Mon Aug 05, 2013 11:06 pm

Hey guys, new to the site and had a few questions. I just picked up a '13 and have seen where 35's are a snugg fit for most. I was looking for some advice on the easist way to get them under without breaking the bank. Ideally I would like to lift about 2 inches front and maybe 1 in the back. I am happy with the suspension now other just wanting a little more lift. Truthfully the truck will see way more on road than off so I really don't need a top end offroad suspension. I know lots of people here recommend carli or thuren, but can anyone guide me to the pieces I may need without buying one of the complete kits. Like I said, I mainly just want to be able to run 35's without them looking stuffed or rubbing. Thanks!

Welcome and congrats on the new truck! You won't need to touch the rear to fit 35's and they won't looked stuffed. The front needs some work though. At minimum you need some 2" spacers and possibly some longer control arms. The longer control arms will push the front axle forward a 1/2" so the tires clear the back side of the fenders. These may or may not be required as different tires have different dimensions and each truck is a little different.

Having said that, I recommend buying a good suspension system the first time around. It saves a lot time and money in the long run. I ran coil spacers for a short while and they were ok, but after riding in my truck after the new Carli parts, I wish I would have done a long time ago. As far as the Carli kits, you can't use the sway bar end links or the rear leaf packs so you have to piece everything together, which can save a little money.

What I would personally do (and have already done) is buy the Carli Hemi coils which will give you about 2" of lift, Carli track bar, Carli control arms, and then decide on what shocks you want. Those parts will run you $1485 plus shocks. The Bilstein 7100 remote reservoir shocks would be a great option at $1330 or the King pin top 2.5" shocks at $2080 (Plus $130 for limit straps and reservoir mounts) would be even better, which is what I am running. With these parts, you are going to have a truck that's much better on and off road and be able to fit 35's with no problem. I know it's a lot of money, but in my opinion it's well worth it. To save a little money up front, you could always keep the stock shocks for a while until you save up the funds to buy new shocks. You'll still have a little better ride up front compared to stock but once you add the new shocks, it will be so much better.

myoung84,
I seen and read your write ups on the Carli system, you are one of the main reasons why I went with the system. Hand down a Super Great suspension system.

If you call Carli, talk to Dan at ext 107. Tell him what you want, and what you want to do to your ride. He will set you up.

Just put 35" tires on my 2012 on stock wheels. The only rubbing I have is on the control arms at full left and right turn. I have ordered Thuren control arms with the bend in them which should give the clearance I need. The only other spot they touch is the inner fender in the rear at full flex which is only because the tire have some heavy tread on the sidewall. A little trimming will fix this. Hope this helps!

Thanks for all the help guys. I really appreciate it. One more question, if I want to run 35x12.5 on factory wheels would I need the Thuren control arms since they have the slight bend or would I be ok with the Carli to prevent rubbing?

My tires are 35/12.5/17 on the stock wheels. I ordered the offset Thuren ones. I did the offset just to be on the safe side! Not sure if the Carli would do it.

For all that work and money I would just keep the 33's on and love your wagon. In my opinion there is no way to justify spending thousands of dollars on new suspension and tires on a brand new truck just so you can have bigger tires. Drive it until those start wearing out, then replace them.

That's kind of what I have planned now myself. That being said, the Carli stuff is pretty sweet.

That's what I did but I sure had a tough time waiting and ultimately justified the upgrade with used 35" Yokohama AT tires from a 37 Toyo upgrade. Even so the expense was immense once I totaled up my suspension stuff I purchased. It was a good thing I planned ahead and saved up for the impending upgrade expense. I really like my decision but if I were back east and in salt road territory I would have done a few things a little differently to protect things from corrosion.

If this is the case, I would just put on a set of 35's.

I run Hankook Dynapro MT 35x12.5-17's on stock Dodge steel wheels in the winter and they barely rub the control arms at full lock, and only on one side. I am not sure what the offset is on those steel wheels though.

Small hijack from a 3G owner...
I've found no need for me to get larger tires. I replaced my worn out stock BFG's with these Falken Wild Peak AT's. For what I mainly do ATs work best. Very happy so far.
