Locker light theory

Post by pdavey » Sat Feb 16, 2013 3:22 pm

Everyone by now knows that I replaced my 4x4 indicator switch last week. A few months before that I was having my RR locker light and SERV 4x4 light come on periodically. Then my 4x4 indicator light malfunctioned and I continued to have random RR locker light blinking. Well, after I replaced the switch, I haven't had the light come back on.

It could be just a coincidence and I will continue to monitor it, however given the way the switch works by sending a different voltages to the smart bar based on resistance in the switch I am wondering if it hasn't been sending a bad signal for a while causing interference in the smart bar which caused the RR signal to go wonky.

Again just a theory but thought I would throw it out there.

Damn why couldn't you post this yesterday ?....only kidding...I just dropped off the pw at the dealer...the new smart bar didn't help...their answer was rear plug and rear actuator....pdavey all you changed was the transfer case switch ?

Yep. When I had my axle bearings changed I didn't have them change the locker as the locker works.

Remember the dealer is just a parts replacer. I hope it fixes your problem and have no clue if my theory is right, however it seems solid given what I know about the smart bar.

I bet your right...my lockers and sway bar all work fine....Im off from work,so I just let the truck run in my driveway for an hour the lights went on and I called the dealer, drove it there and told the mechanic the issue....for sure it's a little stupid thing that causes this issue

My theory/s: The SLIGHTEST bit of corrosion on plugs/wires/connectors can change the voltage. And: the SLIGHTEST bit of dust/dirt/smoke film/etc on the switch contacts can also change the voltage.

Put some dielectric grease on the sway bar and locker connections ASAP! Then apply a good coating of fluid film to them too! My sway bar wouldn't reconnect after some icy water crossings and some grease and fluid film fixed everything. I was just lucky the circuits weren't fried. Do it now, don't procrastinate and risk permanent damage.

Once you get everything working again, it will be MUCH easier to carefully remove all the plugs associated with the lockers, swaybar & 4x4 & spray with a liberal amount of Fluid Film, then carefully put them all back together---than it will to repeat the process you just went through doing this. I'm just sayin.

That shit is magic in a can.

It's a rust & corrosion prevention product. It works very well as an undercoat, or on electrical connections. It keeps water out, somewhat like wd40.

Dont forget to also do the backside of the connectors (where wire goes into the plugs). I live in the worst state for salt use in winter. Mine still lock up in about 5 sec or less.

so the truck is finally in my hands today so i can work on it. i think i figured something out with my issue, when the serv 4x4 light comes on and the rr wants to kick in if i turn left and right and get the truck swaying it turns off. possibilities? i was thinking the smart bar isnt staying connected? the light shows its connected but i read somewhere where a guy cudnt get it reconnected and flexed it alittle and it reconnected. i really dont know whats going on so im trying to think of ideas. im about to go clean all the connectors and all that good crap so i would like some more ideas on this lol ive never really dealt with lockers much and deffinatly never a smart bar

I never had a problem with my lockers/smart bar untill I did a stream crossing on vacation...got the serv lite...and it came on less and less as it dried out. When I got home I cleaned the smart bar connector pins with contact cleaner-blew out with air-put dilectric grease on the connector sealing surfaces' (remember don't put the grease on the contacts) then sprayed a 3M wax based corrosion sealer over the top..no more issues...the snorkel kit should include a smartbar/winch addon...
