2017 2500 Power wagon towing...

Post by smithr179 » Thu May 18, 2023 7:13 am

Hey all,

Looking for some guidance and advice about these power wagons, I'm very close to pulling the trigger on this 2017 2500 HD Power Wagon Laramie, which fits the bill for everything however I missed the fact there is a weight loss for towing between the power wagon and non power wagon versions.

Originally thought the max towing is around 12,200, but if I'm correct it seems it's actually just over 10,000.

I see alot of people towing more than this amount, however I'm looking to haul my 8500lb trailer, plus with it fully loaded I can expect that to be ... much closer to probably 9500-10k.

Is this overloaded? Is there a path with upgraded parts to increase this towing capacity to a safer margin? I see some info in regards to upgrading the springs and air bags, but honestly I'm not sure whether this is a safe bet or should I pursue a non power wagon / other trailer?

Appreciate any advice in advanced,

Welcome to the forum!

Power Wagons have softer springs for off roading. They still have all the same HD drivetrain components as the other HD Ram trucks, so if you just add some air bags and or a weight distributing hitch, you'll be fine. One benefit of the Power Wagon you're considering is the 4.10 gears that it comes with, which makes it more tow friendly.

My 2008 has a GCWR of 17,000 lbs. I added air bags and Daystar cradles to my truck and have exceeded that rating on a couple occasions.

Yep softer suspension is what down rates the rating. I've been at max many times, no issues. I'm getting ready to put bags on and start towing a 30ft lowboy with 2 Jeeps. I know it'll do it but it's gonna be hard on her

need mods... too little time and money

I'm setup for combined weight of 25,000 pounds - Airbags and upgraded brakes are a must!
