Toyo Open Country R/T vs Open Country A/T II
So my Toyo A/T II's are about shot (32,000 freaking miles, we'll see how they honor the 50,000 mile warranty). I like the 285/75/17 that both tires come in, so I plan on sticking with that size. Has anybody had the R/T as well as the A/T II? I'm just wondering how they stack up? Most of my miles are pavement miles, but in winter I do deal with snow, ice, freezing rain, and very little mud.

Supposedly I have 30% life left on my tires, so warranty won’t come into play with my tires. However, they want me to buy their 60,000 mile warranty tire and give me $60 a tire for my old tires, and in exchange I give them $1,100 for new tires. I think I’m going to shop around.

Ran their ATII’s - 2 sets, very satisfied; then last set I went w their Open Country All Terrain, have been good so far on highway towing; gravel & dirt roads in wet, have not had them in snow & ice yet. 35 x 12.5 x 17; stock PW wheels; but I don’t due much rock or hard core 4 x 4 except for hunting season. Am liking them so far 5,000 miles +/-. Will get back after this winter on how they do on snow & ice.

Supposedly this is 30%. I think it’s Les Schwab not carrying Toyo anymore and wanting to push their tire on me and not give me any kind of warranty.

Anyhow - I have not run the R/T. I have ran the AT & the MT and I got about the same mileage, I think a little less out of both sets. TankerZak hasn't checked-in in a while, but he was running the R/T's and had about the same results. The Toyo's are a fantastic tire, don't get me wrong. But good damn, do they wear fast on these trucks. And at their price point, it's just a bit too much. Especially if you're doing a lot of on road traveling.
Right now, I'm running Winter/Summer tire sets. To help save overall. And increase longevity. MT's in the summer when I do most of my offroading and AT's in the winter.

I already put a bunch of miles on both this year. And just put the General Grabber ATX's back on. They've been great overall. Especially in snow and sleet. Do well on ice and in the rain. And have less roll resistance compared to the MT's of course. These things are wearing great. And I suspect I'll actually get 50k out of these. Maybe.
These big trucks just seem to eat tires. But I've been really impressed with the wear so far. If you're looking outside of Toyo's.
I'm just rambling at this point. Dunno where I was going with this post.

In the past Les Schwab has been pretty decent to me. I can't say anything bad about the guys that work there. My problem is the fact that my Toyo A/T II's took a digger on me with 32,000 miles, and they won't stand behind the warranty (they really wanted me to buy their new A/T). The 30% that they claim the tire has sure doesn't give me the warm and fuzzy going into winter. I've actually got some Cooper Discoverer AT 3's on order from Tire Rama. I haven't ran Cooper's since high school, but the reviews look pretty good on the tire. I need something that is good in snow, ice, and mild mud. I don't do any rock crawling so I'm not worried about stuff like that. If the Cooper's go for 40,000 miles I'll be thrilled. Toyo RT was a fine tire but didn't fit my use case. They aren't snow rated and if you sipe them they die early. Siped they are good on ice. I wasn't impressed with deep snow. They did fine in Moab but balled up in Oregon clay. Wouldn't buy them again. If i was doing an AT I'd do the Kanati Trail Hog for sure. It's like a Duratrac but for men... (sidewall that doesn't suck).

Also check out the Falken AT3W’s. Im pretty impressed with them thus far. I went with the 35x12.5/17, although they have them in a 285/75/17 too (which would be better for snow travel in my opinion), and they have them up to a 37”.
They just feel like a heavy duty tire. And if weight has anything to do with hd, then these damn things are tough because they are quite heavy.

i cant believe your actually upset about 30K + miles on a set of tires, that are like new to some people out there...
there is in fact tread left that will keep you safe on dry pavement. Yes, they no longer inspire confidence on wet roads or off road, but you could travel another 10k miles of desert highway if you wanted too.
the warranty is in place on the carcass of a toyo.....it wont pop, or go flat in 50k miles, thats for sure. even when showing some metallic skin.
but the wear rate is not entirely considered.

I've actually been pretty impressed with the RTs. I siped them for a little better performance on icy/plowed roads. I have about 15k on them so far and I'd say getting another 20k will be easily doable. No doubt, with the siping, they'll be chunked to hell and back by 35k or 40k miles. Largely as I drive a lot of dirt/gravel, much of it bladed granite which chews up tires really well. I've also towed a lot with them. I'd say overall, really good tire. Wearing okay for a heavy truck in harsh conditions. Very quiet for this type of tire. Deep snow and mud, they do decent. Everything else, quite well. Now that I have a better winter daily driver, I'm considering doing just MTs on it next, likely without the siping, as I won't have to hit the icy pavement often.

If I was on just dirt roads or it was spring, I wouldn’t worry as much. The problem is I’ve seen it snow 2-3 feet overnight where I live, and the tread depth on these tires don’t give me a lot of winter confidence. I had just hoped that these tires would have looked like this at 40k and not 30k. there is in fact tread left that will keep you safe on dry pavement. Yes, they no longer inspire confidence on wet roads or off road, but you could travel another 10k miles of desert highway if you wanted too.
the warranty is in place on the carcass of a toyo.....it wont pop, or go flat in 50k miles, thats for sure. even when showing some metallic skin.
but the wear rate is not entirely considered.

for sure...we drive some heavy lards.
the tires best for winter, are not suited for summer pavement.
winter tread does not burn away on cold pavement,
but summer tread will burn away faster then when on hot blacktop. And most AT tire compounds are pretty soft.
you need a winter set, you need an AT every other season set. Your winter set will go for many seasons.

and im palm tree green with envy....
actually though. I hate the heat, and used to snowboard at least 60 times a season when i lived north of the south.
Im a snow guy and would deal with snow for most of the year, but the Open country AT ll cant be the most logical option for that scenario.

The trick is finding the best tire for year round purpose. For me a reasonably aggressive A/T Tire with good highway manners works best. I need something that works in snow, ice, wet pavement, dirt roads, and ice. I don't expect a tire to last more than 40k miles with my use. I'm just disappointed about the wear the Toyo A/T II's have. ,I think there is a finer line between 50k highway/all road miles vs age/gravel/load varied use.
Ive never had a tire last me more then 20k miles, because like you, wear bars indicate you now have lesser traction.
All my Suvs did tires in with about 12-15k miles
my sedans were about 15-18k miles
jeeps and trucks are about 20k miles with AT tires-because all terrain tires suck once you hit wear bars, even though this is when they start to wear the slowest and seem to last forever. By getting rid of them now, you are losing out on 1,000s of road capable miles.
To me, TIRES ARE EVERYTHING, as your truck cant do anything without them.

I did 3,500 miles on my Nitto NT555r rear tires, highway only, with the hellcat. Sold them everytime to someone who was satisfied with the tread.
I absolutely loved my toyo RT 35s, but like you, at 20k miles, wet traction was not ideal.
im now on 37s and expect another 20k miles of perfect performance and then ill decide if 40s are a go, or the next gen 37 RT.
Best all around tire for a PW right now in my opinion. Including the size! ( i have no comment on snow performance)

Also, dont forget about the nitto at’s. I put a set on my wifes denali xl and they have been a great tire. Its by no means an exact comparison to a ram 2500, but it aint no little suv either. Heres what they look like with over 40k miles on them....

They are certainly not as soft as they were when new. Thats a little bit what I am skeptical about for this winter. They worked great last winter. I am seriously impressed with how they have lasted. I was not expecting them to hang in there this well.

Replacement tires for the Toyo Open Country A/T II’s have been installed. I went with the Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT’s in a 285/75/17.
