Facebook Group & Forum - Tire Popularity Poll

Post by OffroadTreks » Mon Feb 11, 2019 1:19 pm

I polled the Power Wagon Next Generation 2005-Present facebook group with its 3000 members on which tire was most popular among Power Wagon owners.

288 people voted in the poll.

By far, the most popular tires among Power Wagon owners are the

Cooper Discoverer STT Pro +55 votes
Toyo Open Country M/T +49 votes
Nitto Ridge Grappler + 43 votes

Interesting results. I'm just posting this as something to consider when deciding on a tire. Take it with a grain of salt.

- I'm adding a poll to this thread, so that forum members here may also contribute a vote sadly the stupid forum software limits me to 20 items.

Popularity doesn’t mean quality. KO2’s are a common tire with generally poor performance under these trucks. But they’re cool, the Toyota crowd loves them and they dropped them out of an airplane for a promo video.

All I know is the KO2 is a far superior tire in Vail, Colorado than either the Duracrap or the STT pros I had on it. The Coopers were downright dangerous.

So far. I've had one set of the Cooper STT, and 2 sets of the Toyo MT's. All 35". Like both the Cooper and the Toyo's. Think my next set is going to be the IROK radial. 36x13.5-17

I don't facebook.

I put Micky Thompson ATZ P3s on the 16. I liked them a lot. Now I have a new 19 and am back to the Duracraps that came with it. Going to get another set of the ATZs when my wallet recovers from buying the new truck.

Sell the duratracs while they are new. You would be roughly half way to a new set of tires.

I'd sell them if I knew someone that wanted them, but I don't have time to deal with craigslist idiots or the likes. Only home two weeks a month.

Best thing to do with them would be to find a big green brush pile that needs burned.

well, shoot; I've been trying off & on for a couple years to buy some used DuraTracs but they were either sold or too far away or....
Finally I just bought a new set from my local tire store; I have been pretty satisfied all around with the DuraTracs.

My Cooper Discoverer STT (old tread pattern, not the newer "PRO") finally got so noisy I couldn't take it any more - it didn't help that the front ball joints were worn out. New tires & new ball joints & new tires and $2300 later it is much nicer; should get me a few more years & then it will be Power Wagon time!
Trucks: 2003 4x4 Dodge 3/4 ton, 1972 4x4 Ford 3/4 ton (factory hi-boy), shopping for new Power Wagon (maybe 2024?)

They won’t hold up to off-road use on power wagons. Heck, they don’t hold up to dirt roads on power wagons. Good traction, didn’t have any complaints on that part. So with a 4000 point truck they are probably fine. I have a full set of low mileage if anyone is around abq.

I wonder if the load range E tires are stronger? Maybe another ply in the sidewall? Like the 35x12.5?

I've probably gone through 6-7 sets of the BFG ATs (old and new version) over the years. They're good in the snow and have strong sidewalls. Pretty much worthless in mud and wear fairly fast on a PW. I always started to look for new tires when I crossed 30K with them.

That's why I decided to switch to the ATZ p3s. Much better in mud than the BFGs and still decent in the snow. I can't run a pure MT all year. Too much snow and ice, not to mention 600 mile round trips every month to my place in WV.

FWIW, I won't run a D rated tire on these trucks. IDK why they come standard.

Sounds like another set of wheels is in your future.

I've got a set of Muds mounted for the 07 and I'll put them on if I'm going to someplace extra muddy. But I find the P3s a pretty good compromise the rest of the time. I like the way the truck handled with them and they have decent sidewalls.
