Truck felt squirrely on drive back
I don't normally drive long distances at high speed in the truck, so I might be misunderstanding this, but with new 37's at low 40 psi I found the trucks handling at 60+ a bit disconcerting last night driving back from Moab. I don't remember this on stock 33's. I can't describe it really other then sort of floaty, I just got the feeling I shouldn't be driving that fast. And hitting rough sections of the highway at 60 was a bit alarming, the truck seemed to bounce a lot and not in a totally straight line.
I was at about 50 psi outbound and it didn't seem that bad, but I also was pretty tired last night. I also went a sightly different route, so no 75 MPH sections.
I'm curious as to what people think might be going on, assuming it wasn't just in my head.

Re: Truck felt squirrely on drive back
Definitely need more psi for that heavy truck. Just allows too much sidewall flex.

Re: Truck felt squirrely on drive back
I can’t remember from PWIM, but I think you are on OEM track bars? How many miles? Might be time for Thuren or Carli replacements.
I’ve been battling the same thing, but I’ve got a lot more weight up high in the rear. Higher tire pressures and a stiffer tire helped me, of course with a corresponding drop in ride comfort. I’m running about 40 up front and 38 in back on the highway as a compromise.
When I got back I had this in my driveway and the rest of the hard parts arrived a day later - hoping Don’s custom valving and raised rear track bar will fix me up.

I am on OEM, but only about 6200 miles.
That looks like a very expensive box of fun.

Re: Truck felt squirrely on drive back
I ran 35/30 with 37x12.5 tires. You could try more air but I doubt that's it. I'd probably start by checking the torque on all of the fasteners in the front end. I found hand tight bolts under my truck at 2500 miles.
Re: Truck felt squirrely on drive back
I've doubled that speed on 37's. Haha

Re: Truck felt squirrely on drive back
My truck was squirrelly too and im on the stock tires. It whobbled so bad it set off the abs and traction control. This is still with the original crap trackbar bar. So thats getting replaced asap.
Re: Truck felt squirrely on drive back
Honestly, ALL of the stock tires are JUNK.
The tire itself makes a huge difference also, the 37" Yokohama AT/s was the best riding one I had. Extremely street mannered. The Hankook MTs are rougher and can "walk' around a curve depending on psi. They do best with 50psi. The Yokos I ran 40-45 front and 30-35 rear if unloaded.
The tread on the ground plays a big part in it feeling squirrelly. Like a brand new set of MTs feel real damn loose until you get 500+ miles on them.

Re: Truck felt squirrely on drive back
these are 37 toyo MTs you are running?
yea, its going to be squirrely.
the check is, find the speed that makes them squirrelly, if they are the same kind of squirrely at 75 and 85 that they are when at 65 MPH, then your ok.
just not used to a True MT. and you could use aftermarket trackbars, specifically in the rear

Re: Truck felt squirrely on drive back
Different ball game on larger tires, they can hold the truck weight with less pressure. Too much psi and you'll be riding on the center tread only.Bigdodge wrote:Definitely need more psi for that heavy truck. Just allows too much sidewall flex.

Re: Truck felt squirrely on drive back
your experience should be the disclaimer advertisment for 35+ toyo MT installations..
its just what mud tires do... you can carry those right on up to top speed and your ride will be the same. HOLD ON
what width rims or stock?
if you use too narrow of a wheel with a true 37, your going to float around unless you do the Chalk test and find the perfect PSI. or deal with it until you get some wear, but no way in telling how they will wear in the Long run.

Re: Truck felt squirrely on drive back
Well, you say “new 37’s” and you “dont remember it” with the stock 33’s. Still got the original tires to swap out for a test drive again? Are you still on factory suspension?
Im gonna guess it is mainly a characteristic from the tires. Hopefully some suspension improvements and tire psi adjustments will get ya going straight again!

Re: Truck felt squirrely on drive back
Another thing is alignment, I don't what tire you have, if the toe is slightly in or out, they will fight each other. Zero toe is best. Not sure if this is the squirrelly you're talking about but it can make a difference too. I've found factory spec is a little off, do dead zero and it'll track true.

Re: Truck felt squirrely on drive back
go run the 37 RT if road manners is more important. 3 of my 35 RTs have plugs from nails. 1 of them has 3 or 4 plugs. Ive rotated and balanced 2 times in nearly 15k miles. Just ordered Centramatics to try and minimize vibrations, but they run Daily on the highway at 90 MPH often. When im in Germany.
they will chunk and scrub if you subject them to MT style offroading but so do the MT..they still #ToyoWontPop and will go until you decide the traction is not sufficient, or you want a larger tire.
i remember 5+ years ago when the toyo and Nitto MT was all the rage and everything from jeeps to trucks would run them, wailing all the way down the road.
For a jeep, the MT was not a wear item. They are some of the sturdiest proper MT road going tires there are, but they have terrible handling/comfort/sound characteristics.

the RT or ridge grappler are now selling to the old MT crew, and they seem fine with it.

Re: Truck felt squirrely on drive back
I run the same 37x12.5R17 Toyo MT on mine. 42/33 pressures. Drive 80mph a lot to Moab. I don’t know if I’d call it squirrels but it definitely needs tire correction constantly, on fresh front end parts and an alignment.
Big lugs on these tires. Street handling will be sacrificed. Do the Thuren REAR trackbar no question, make sure alignment is good, check all front end parts.

I think the key word is ‘new’. Tread squirm is pretty noticeable for the first 5k miles or so.

Bingo, think about it, the "lug" is soft and leverage will make it move. New MTs always feel "loose" on handling.Rodeoflyer wrote:I think the key word is ‘new’. Tread squirm is pretty noticeable for the first 5k miles or so.
