Guaging interest in a WFA class next spring

Post by Cactus Red » Thu Sep 10, 2015 12:36 am

Hello all,

After reading about an apparently preventable death in an off highway accident here, and knowing my WFA Certification has expired, I've been in contact with Glen Stilson, the owner of Independence Training.

http://www.independencetraining.com/

As well as providing excellent firearms training, Glen and his instructors also offer a variety of courses in specialized first aid training. He also does courses in Red Cross Certified Wilderness First Aid for groups/corporate entities.

This year's calendar is pretty much full for me. So, I'm interested to see if there is interest in setting up a class next spring. I'd prefer to do the class outdoors - it is after all, Wilderness based training. That also gives us time to plan, and for Glen to get it into his schedule. Saturday\Sunday classes are available with enough lead time for Glen.

Cost is TBD, but will be similar to other WFA classes.

Thank's,

Mark Longfield

HI ya Mark, we just had WFA in Prescott provided free with scholarships from the Sherriff's Office. I didn't take advantage but several of the members of our search and rescue posse did. I don't mind helping people in need but more training just makes you more vulnerable to law suits if something goes bad. The Good Samaritan law only goes so far in providing relief from litigation.

Condolences about your recent loss too.....

I'd be down for something like that, but I'm already a state certified EMT-B. Would the class offer anything beyond what I'm already certified for?

It might. How much gear do you carry in your truck or on you when hiking? You're used to having a hell if a lot of equipment and resources available. Does that translate to stabilizing and keeping someone alive for hours or perhaps longer in the field?

Thanks Michael.

My reasoning for getting training are two fold. First, my wife and I travel solo a lot. Secondly, I take groups for back country trail rides frequently, so I feel these skills are needed for that too.

Mark, you're too far away from me for this. I have training close to this at work where I'm a first responder. Also have hazmat, fire, and some DHS training too.

I carry a Level II first aid kit, with everything but oxygen, o-sat, and electronic monitoring. You're absolutely right though. I've been trained to keep someone alive until they get to the hospital, which is usually no more that 30 minutes. I'd like to expand my kit, but it gets expensive!

I think you'd enjoy the class - charge it to Professional Development on taxes.

Another class you might look into is Wilderness EMT cert. I believe it's offered in Flagstaff.

We've set the date for the class - 09, 10 April 16. It will be done at a facility yet to be determined. Once the date gets closer, and there is a better handle on participants, we'll get that set too. I've guaranteed 8 attendees, we can go as high as 25. I'd hoped to do this as an outdoor class, but the course material requires a portion of it be done inside. That's probably for the better anyway - early April weather is highly unpredictable.

Thanks,

Mark
