Long Range Optics
Hey all just built a custom rifle chamber in 30-378. It's time for optics! Night force, leupold LRT, not sure. Zero stop or not. So many decisions. Help! This will be not just target but a lot of hunting. Wyoming presents its self with lots of long rang opportunities.
Carl Scott: Black 2012 PW 35/12.50/17 Nitto Mud Grappler. Thuren control arms. Carli 3" Hmei coils. Carli Track bar. Magnaflow dual inlet/single outlet muffler. Front window tint. Clear Bra. Cold air intake. Hard wired lockers. All options but leather and dual climate

Re: Long Range Optics
There are so many options in that price range. Check out Trijicon 5-20 Accupoint. Brilliant optics, illuminated rectical, no batteries, lots of elevation adjustment, large turrets, and they are tough too. I'm using a TR24 on my AR, and am very impressed with the quality.

This is what I had on my 300 Kong. 300 kong is a 30-378 Weatherby with blown out shoulders. Hope you reload for the 30-378. The brass is $$$$

Re: Long Range Optics
The first (and only) 30-378 I shot was a light weight Fred Wells built rifle. At that time I was shooting a 300WM at the range, and heard something a LOT louder. The guy offered me a chance to take a shot, and I've never been kicked like that before or since. I had a good cheek weld, and it actually made my teeth hurt...
The guy had it built for an Elk hunt in Wyoming, and expected to carry it on a high mountain type guided hunt.

Budget is 1k-2k. The lower I keep it the sooner i get it! Cactus Red-Did the one you shot have a shit sprayer or not? The one on my rifle is integrated into the barrell with 90% off the gass porting on the top side. This keeps you from eating a dust cloud after the trigger is pulled and keeps the muzzel down too. Its not any wose than my 30-06 for sure.

Re: Long Range Optics
Nope, it was a 7+ pound with scope high country Elk rifle. Absolutely beautiful, very effective, but a brutal gun.

Re: Long Range Optics
Just found this, guns and hunting up my alley,
I have a Nightforce on my custom 300 win mag, can reach out to 1000 yard and have put it on paper. Have a custom 270 being built now, its a lite rifle and I will most likely go with the lightest Nightforce or Schmidt and Bender, just because it will be a back gun.
Don't get me wrong Leupold makes great scopes, but I would go through there custom shop and have one built to my needs.

Re: Long Range Optics
The 30-378 is a Weatherby round. If you blow out the shoulders on the case. You will have the better shooting 300 Kong. Which is what I built a couple of years ago. The 30-378 is not cheap to shoot. Even if you reload. 20 pieces of brass will cost you close to a hundred bucks. I spent over $4,000 building the gun. Hart barrel, Timey trigger, carbon fiber stock, Remington action. Ended up with a Nightforce scope on it. After trying a Leo. Sold it last year for $6,000. This is to give you an idea on the gun. Don't know what scottwagon1 has in his.

Re: Long Range Optics
After doing a lot of research on this round I decided on. A .30 cal bullet is all you need to do any hunting anywhere. For long range 500+ yards on elk for example I want a heavy grain bullet going fast. This is the fastest .30 cal ever built to date. Buying the brass is the worst part at about $70 for 20. Once you own the brass is not that bad cost wise-some where in the neighborhood of $3.00 a round. If you buy loaded ammo it's about $135.00 for 20. Big difference. I bought the barrel and action from someone in Colorado on armslist for $500. Barrel is a Douglas heavy fluted with break 1:9 twist and action is savage long action. He just wanted it gone because it had a break and "I hate anything with a break" he said. Paid $250 for a new stock and $900 for the scope and had a trigger job done buy the local gun smith. I load the brass as follows-103.5 grains of H1000, Remington magnum primers, and a 200grain Barnes LRX. 3185fps with this mix up. Gun is sub MOA.bstefanic wrote:ScottWagon1 wrote:
