Anybody Into Long range Shooting

Post by neotech » Fri Nov 09, 2012 11:49 pm

Hey Guys. Just wondering if there are any long range shooters here. I've been practicing for a couple years now. As of this last summer I have passed the 1000yard mark and am working on the 1500yard goal. I am using a Rem 700 in 338 lapua in a Accuracy International AX Chassis.

Just wondering if anybody else shares this exciting past time

I share your passion. I just do not have the funds or the gun or the distances to do it. I have had my eye on this for a while, Savage Model 10/110 FCP HS Precision---or the Savage Model 10/110 BA. The scope would be as much or more than the rifle.

That would be a sweet Rifle. I have had to cheat on the scope a bit. I really want a Nightforce but as you know sometimes you cannot save long enough. I currently have a Bushnell Tactical 6-24x50 Illuminated FFP. It has worked very very well and at half the price of a nightforce it was managable. But It's not a nightforce. It has taken me almost 2 years to get the AX chassis. So far worth every penny.

What about a http://www.opticsplanet.com/leupold-mar ... m-tmr.html or one of their similar models ? I believe that this is pretty much the standard for military long range shooters. Or one of their new front focal scopes ?

I am not a huge fan of leupy as i have had many issues with the Mark 4 before. If I could I would do the US Optics. Also optics planet doesn't ship to me. So here the prices are extravagent. I'm just saving right now. At the moment this setup is still better that what i can do. When I finally make or pass my goal I will be looking to extend the distance and this scope will not take me past 1700 easily.
FYI though I am shooting the OTM 300g Bergers at 2840 fps and with that the rifle should easily pass 2000. But I can't see that far. But I would bet I could hit a barn at 1700

Yeah, it's been a while, but my dad and I got into it for a bit. 30-06 on sniper stock, stainless free floating barrel. We didn't have high enough scope ramps, hence the six foot marker board out of the top of the target marked at 1' increments. The numbered ones are my dad and the unnumbered ones mine.

Nice setup. It is definatly a fun hobby. And the best part is it is very challenging. Once you really reach out so much comes into play. In theory it is easy but it is so not. Looks like you have a nice place to shoot at

Wow! Congrats on the 1000 yd. shot. Not easy by any means. Have to take so much into consideration...coriolis, wind speed, trajectory, bullet weight, etc. Props  Have a friend that shoots 800 yds. with his Saiga 5.45. Can hit a person sized target. Would love to get into it but I don't have enough land. I love shooting. Into more of the IDPA pistol stuff as well as sporting clays (helps because I hunt waterfowl all winter).

Thanks Sparks. I too enjoy clays. But the long range is my personal preference. In fall I and my spotter were taking turns shooting a watermelon sized rock (looked like a watermelon but was almost 20" long and 15"height) at 1200 yards with a 300WM. 8 out of 10 hits Using a hornaday 208 amax at 2900fps. Its weird to shoot under 500 yards now. Rifle season opens up here on thursday and I already have a Hide setup at 750 yards exactly from a game trail that is very well used. Some fantastic animals here. I'm going to set up and wait. Hope for that perfect broadside shot and send a 300g berger into it's boiler. Or just lay in the snow for 8 hours.

No pictures to show, but I too am a long range junkie. My primary hunting/target rifle is my Winchester Model 88 .308. I really like shooting that rifle. My preferred rifle to shoot is my dads Browning Bar II Safari 7MM Mag. I really REALLY like shooting that rifle.

When I was 15 years old, I dropped a nice 10 point buck at 1100 yards with that Winchester .308. I'll never forget that shot.

My long range rifle is a Rem M700 police tactical, with a Nightforce scope. Was chambered for 300 RUM. Changed the barrel to a Hart. Now it's a 300 Kong. That's a Weatherby 30/338 that has it's shoulders reangled. It will send a 30cal. 165gr bullet down range at over 3,900fps. I been using Serria 220gr Match bullets mostly. Those I send down range at 3,600fps. using Reloder 22 powder. When you shoot a rifle. You think trigger control. With this thing. You think recoil management. This is NOT a cheap gun to shoot. 20 pieces of brass is over $75.00. Barrel erosion is a problem too. I'm already seeing it at alittle over 300 rounds. I like shooting my AR15 better. Cheaper and more fun. Thinking on selling the M700 for a AR10 in 308. Sell it cheap, $4000.

Seems like there are quite a few of you who know rifles and know how to shoot long range. Now my question to you (since I'm looking at possibly buying a nice bolt action rifle for target shooting and a SHTF scenario)...

What are your thoughts on Weatherby rifles? I've always LOVED the Weatherby rifle, ever since I was little. Just something about that design and look that does it for me. What do you suggest caliber wise? I'm not expert shot by any means, but I'd like to have something I can practice with and get better. I've got a .17HMR (I know, most of you think of that as a toy), but I've killed MANY groundhogs with that thing at probably 100 yards. So, I'm just looking at getting something with a little more power/reach.

Thanks.

I'm not into long range, but ive shot long range when i was much younger.

I just picked up, literally just the other day, a Colt LE6940 AR15 with the "Restricted" roll stamp. I haven't had a chance to fire it yet.

Working on what mods I want, especially a scope. Looking at one of the Trijicon ACOG 4x32 models, but they are pricey, but these scopes not for long range that you guys are talking about. I'm sure they're good for up to 800-1000 yards, I think.

Can hardly wait to find some time to shoot it.
