I had an 1190R on order before the world fell apart. Did my research. Great bikes. I've had 1150 ADV BMW, 06 1200 ADV BMW, 640 ADV KTM, 950 ADV KTM, and 950 SE KTM. All good.

If you are set on an 1190, get going soon. They do not last.

Sorry, i have no experience with that bike.
I have a Suzuki DR650. Not even in the same league as a KTM. I bought it new in 2005, have 16,000+ miles on it & not a bit of trouble with it. Still has the original battery !!! Thats sayin a lot in NY winters. I just fired it up the other day. I change the oil & filter once a year & use full synthetic. Original chain & sprockets as well. Tires, gas, oil, filters & inspections is all i ever put into it.

Good luck with your purchase. My bike is what allows me to keep the Power Wagon. It has saved me enough to pay for the bike 2x over + insurance.

Very true about the cost of a 650 vs any KTM or BMW.

But let's be clear, they are not the same bikes. The closest comparison might be the 690R at twice the price of a 650, but agaun, not even close to being the same bike.

I'll admit, I loved my TW200 and my KLR 650 back in the day, but then I got a KTM 640, then moved to big bores like the 1200GSA and the 950SE.

I won't go back. And with the closest comparison being a Tenere, I'll still buy KTM or BMW. Every time. They just pure perform. :D

I decided to get an enduro myself but settled with a cheap ole 2014.5 KLR650 New Edition. The justification was to save from burning so much gas through the PW and I can splurge a little more on accessories and what not and still not break the bank. My friend has an `09 BMW and recently had to put a new fuel pump and have the ABS worked on and racked up almost $2k to fix it. At that point in time I was glad I went with the simplicity of the gravity fed carburetor KLR  It's a huge step down in power from my last bike ('06 Busa turned up a little  ) but I love the back dirt trails on the way home everyday kicking up sand with the knobbies.

I only do what the majority of the 4 voices in my head tell me to. In most cases, I ignore two of them because one doesn't speak English, and I suspect the other is talking to someone else.

As i stated; "not even in the same league as a KTM."

I am the "odd man out" at work. Everyone else has Harley's. I sat & listened to a guy once talk about all the things he had to have fixed on his to the tune of $2k+, the same year it was off warranty, for about a half hour. It only had 10k miles more than mine on the odometer. Then i said: "you know what i had to do to mine last year ?".....Same thing as last year: change the oil & filter & put tires on it & have it inspected !!! Then asked him: let me know when it has paid for itself 2x over. He then gave me some choice words & yes, he is still my friend. To each their own i say. It is all about what you want & can afford. I wanted a cheap, reliable bike that was good on fuel, so i could keep the PW by saving on fuel in ride-able weather. The results: A 2005 Suzuki DR650SE that was $4850 brand new, gets 50-60 mpg, is uber reliable & $100 a year to insure. I have achieved the results i wanted. Do your homework to make sure you achieve the result you want. You will thank yourself from that day forward.

My KTM 950 and 990 were both stellar on the highway, but the BMW was better IMHO. Between my crotch rockets, sport tourer (I had a Yamaha ST borrowed for a short while for a couple trips), the KTM, BMW R1200GS, and my current Harley, hands down the BMW for highway. I also dropped it more than a fe times offroad, so they can be trail ridden if you a determined! HAHA! ;)

IT comes down to need and budget. The big bikes are just that, big bikes. I love them. Addicted if you will. If you are a person that likes power to pass, keep up on an Interstate, you may find the smaller 650's lacking. If you want to ride around a lot of miles and putter on back roads exploring, ride it to work, around town, etc, they work perfectly. That being said, for a more highway exploring oriented bike the Tenere and the mythical 2016 Honda AT will be awesome. (the Honda may prove to be the best big bore endure out there, no one knows yet as far as I have heard)

And it's easier to load the lighter weight smaller bikes onto hitch carriers. You can take an 1190, but you better buy a solid rack and double check your hitch bolts! I carried my 905 Super Endure that way for a season to work and back, and it was fine. A buddy carried his with a BMW 1150 on it and it bent his hitch and I think wrecked some bolt holes in the frame of the truck.

A 990 Adv is on my short-list of vehicles to buy. Something that can haul around camera and camping gear a little better than my 525 can.
Honestly though, a short-track sled's higher on that list... 600 liquid-cooled 136" IQR. But that's just me.

Haven't heard a lot about the 1190s, but I don't lurk those boards often. I believe they lost some ground clearance and suspension from the 990's, and it's not like the 990 was lacking in power. :dunno

~25k on my '07. And yeah ... 11mpg vs. 50+ around town ... kind of a no-brainer. Not to mention i'm doing the speed limit before i'm through the intersection on the bike... :o

Love my 525 though. From this weekend...

You must be so excited about getting the new bike!

My higher mpg ride - XR650... 11+ inches of travel front and rear, 13 inches of ground clearance, 52mpg. It does get squirrelly with the knobby tires on the highway above 80mph ;)

Pics up shortly. lol. Gonna try and switch out the silly road tires for some TKC80's Monday or Tuesday. Then pics will be in order I suppose, after I test them out in Kananaskis.

I rode a buddy's 950 thinking the same .... I was rather surprised how well it carried its weight on the trails.
No, it's not a dirt bike, but for "adventure", it does a damn good job.

Know guys that have singletrack'd those things... Kind of a weird feeling, being on a dirt bike and seeing a 990 coming up hot behind you :jawdrop: A lot of what it can do really comes down to the loose nut behind the handlebars.

500lbs wet, bags and camping gear gets to 650lbs it, stuffed with 10 days worth. My first adventure bagger was a 2006 BMW GSA and it topped out at 750 loaded up. They are great for touring mountain back roads, forestry roads, mountain trails, etc. Next year I think we're planing a 14 day Moab/Grand Canyon trip. Dirt touring the back country. :D

I've run a 450 EXC before and when I had my 950SE I ran everything the dirt bike guys would and it weighed around 400lbs. I had this one out today with just the side bags and some day trip gear, maybe 550lbs. It eats everything aside form new deep loose gravel, but no bike likes that crap! ;)

On the hard pack trails I ran today it was fine, but they were not dirt bike single track hill climbs. If I have a decently hard trail (not a mug bog) and about 36 inches of trail, I'll give it a whirl. Loose rocks and roots cause issues but thats what 8 inches of suspension is for!

I've been riding these bigger bikes for about 8 years now I guess, and they are what you make them. Don't be afraid to crash and just trust the bike can do it and twist that damn throttle. ;)
