I want to retire with good health. Not because of my health. I want to still be able to do things, and not limit myself. My dad had to retire early because of his health. I don't want to be like him in that reguard.azracer wrote:Nice!

I retired from the US Navy at 42yrears of age and have had a few meaningless jobs since. now on social security in addition to military retired pay. (67years old now) I've had fun, am still in good health and actually participate in search and rescue. It's funny to see the look on 20 something guys when it's us old foggys that come to their aid

Re: The END is NEAR ...
Thanks guys.
I should know better than to "never say never", but if I can, I hope to leave this March and never drive a mixer AGAIN.
I do have an upcoming appointment with Cal Fire about part-time seasonal employment as a driver of support type vehicles like water tankers and equipment movers, not on the front lines fighting forest fires.
I'm still amazed, considering between the ages of 13 to 35, I was making all the wrong choices.azracer wrote:Nice!

Up until the other day, by my own calculations, that were wrong, had me eligible in a year and four months from now, so it was a pleasant surprise. I'll turn 61 this March, so I need to think about a whole year before I'll get my Social Security at 62.RustyPW wrote:So Cruz, are you going to retire on that date? Or you going to work longer?

Re: The END is NEAR ...
Chuck Null, the one time head coach for the Steelers once said. "once you start thinking about retirement, you should retire." What he means is, that once you start thinking about it. You start looking for the exit. And your mind is not on the job any more. That is so true. Anymore, I'm just there collecting a pay check. Counting down the days. Teaching the younger guys my job. On my last day at work. The only thing they will see when I go though the front gate for the last time. Is a vapor trail.

Re: The END is NEAR ...
Hey Cruz!
Now that you can see the finish line, try to enjoy your last bit of time. I drove a mixer for 5 years and it wasn't much fun. Must really suck in that hot climate... I found winter easier to deal with than the peak of summer up here in Canada. Biggest issue in the winter was keeping your water from freezing up. Cleanup was easy because the concrete would freeze on the chutes and such instead of hardening. A bit of hot water would wash it off.
You might feel rejuvenated going into a different line of work, I know I did. Fire fighting equipment operator work sounds interesting. Whatever you do, once you leave concrete don't go back. Time is short on this rock and if you're not enjoying your job then change it. With truck driving experience, your options are vast.
When I bought a trailer in the States last year, I was amazed at how many retired US folk drive RV's up here to Canada for sales on our RV lots. They work on commission and largely control their own schedule. They use their own trucks and get to travel while making money. The power wagon might be a bit light on payload for such a task but hey...there are many options once you free yourself from full time work.

In a year, I make my decision on retirement. I'll be 60 in 3/16, So 4/1/16 would be my retirement date.
