Wondering if anyone else has been having troubles with their front pto seal. I had to put a reman t-case in.
(That in itself has been a nightmare, the first 2 I got, I didnt even put in because the 1st had a stripped drain plug, 2nd had stripped position sensor threads) I cut ties with that guy & tried another rebuilder, so now on the 3rd case, front pto seal leaked, the rebuilder sent a new seal, it leaked still, they warrantied that case, now the 4th front pto seal leaks, (the 1 currently in the truck)
Im wondering if this last rebuilder is just buying poor quality seals? Bad batch? Anyone had similar issues with the front pto seal?

Re: Transfer case troubles
1 faulty seal ok, but 4 in a row? Assuming it was installed correctly, has the shaft been examined to see if it is out of round? Is the leak between the shaft and seal or the seal and the case? It doesn't take much to crack these aluminum TCs.

Re: Transfer case troubles
The front seal has the highest probability of leaking due to the fact that it's submerged in oil. There's three main ways a leak can occur there:
I hope some of these suggestions help with your diagnosis.
- Oil leaking between the lip of the seal and the yoke (could be a bad seal or a groove worn into the surface of the yoke). The fix is to install a new seal and use a Speedi Sleeve to repair a grooved yoke.
- Leaking between the seal O.D. and the case (if someone wasn't careful removing the old seal and gouged the aluminum housing). The fix is to smooth the gouge and install a new seal with sealant on the O.D..
- Oil wicking between the splines of the shaft and yoke. The fix is to remove the yoke and apply sealant to the splines.
I hope some of these suggestions help with your diagnosis.

Re: Transfer case troubles
I fixed this a long time ago, but never updated the resolution.
I removed the front driveshaft, drove in 4x4 to rule out an out of balance driveshaft as the cause. Still leaked. The remanufacturer had sent me another seal, still leaked. Seal seemed pretty flimsy.
I asked the remanufacturer if they'd spot me on a new oem seal. They did. It was MUCH more substantial material. Problem solved & about 10k miles since then.

Re: Transfer case troubles
Oh ya, my front driveshaft had about 5k miles on it when i started the fiasco of transfer cases (new oem)
Re: Transfer case troubles
they cut corners to save $10. i dont even bother with aftermarket seals as alot of them are cheap junk
