Misfire - Cylinder #3

Post by TommyG » Mon Nov 25, 2019 3:39 pm

Just started stuttering this morning. Hoping this electronic and not the cam/lifters. Goes in tomorrow for diagnosis.

Coil tested bad on that cylinder. Going to replace it and throw new plugs in since it is about time for those too.

Maybe this....
https://youtu.be/dI93-Zdx_nY

I have a 2013 PW with the 5.7 Hemi. The coil pack on #1 cylinder keeps failing. I've replaced all plugs with OEM units and all 8 coil packs with MSD units but #1 failed again so went back to OEM on all 8 then #1 failed again so i parked it not sure what to do yet.
I'm aware of the lifter oiling issue causing failures but haven't been able to link that with repetitive coil pack failure.

Got the dreaded "hemi tick" on my 2012 PW with a Number 3 and 7 cylinder misfire code.
Currently at the local shop getting new parts i.e. 16 lifters, 1 cam, gaskets etc.
Heads are getting sent out to get checked and machined as well as the valve seats re-ground.
Tech will check timing chain and water pump as part of the cam job.
$5600....ouch.

***Update*** FYI....Lifter Part number for Gen 3 Hemi (2012) 0503 8784 AD. These are the updated lifters. Haven't confirmed but I believe they are similar to 0503 8787 AD with the larger needle bearings. Darth Hemis youtube video shows the differences in the needle bearings.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5MGGl_5tl0

The only thing making me feel better is a co worker had the same issue with his 5.7 Hemi 1500 Ram but had to replace the entire engine due to the lifter roller blowing up and sending needle bearings and metal fragments into his oil sump.
Dealer quoted him $18k for a new motor. After fighting with insurance for a month, he balked and bought a rebuild from a local shop for $2500 but wound up spending $5000 total after install.

Pics of his detonated lifter roller bearing.

We did one coil pack and all of the plugs and it has been good ever since. Figuring I'll have to do a cam and lifters one of these days given how many of them fail but this one was a pretty simple fix.
