2016 Getting New Gears noise, weird bearing?

Post by Luke Duke » Sat Jan 04, 2025 12:07 am

4.1>4.88

My guy has talked to Yukon a boatload of times and Rons Machine Shop a boatload as well…and we’ve learned a lot.

My 2016 has the front axle the same the 2013, we learned that from Yukon…no explanation.

We’ve bought a bunch of crush sleeves, bearings, and a second set of rear gears, same noise. My guy said he saw there was a conversion bearing and wondered if that was the issue because when he got a Timken bearing from O’Reilly the race was correct but the bearing itself was wrong. He said the new bearing from Ron’s didn’t fit exactly like factory either.

So, Monday he’s calling Ron’s and Yukon again. I was hoping someone here might have an answer.

Also, he asked if AAM had a 4.88 set and I said aid post it here.

Thanks in advance.

Yukon has a poor rep. Guys in the Jeep world stay away from them.

Perhaps order your bearing parts from Mopar Online. I've even heard bad things about Timkin 3rd party parts these days. If you order Mopar, at least you know you are going to get OE spec.

Spend some time reading through this thread: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3239
Toward the bottom of page #1 he talks about the conversion bearing.

Also this build thread starting on page #5 he talks about the parts he ordered and the install on page #7: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2348
He also talks about the conversion bearing.

Well, he talked to an old timer from Yukon that said he really should take down the shim and that got rid of the majority of it. He told me to do a break in cycle on the gears and we will go from there.

I’m driving it now to check out the noise and I hear it at 35mph and ~15mph but only during deceleration. It’s so slight he could told me it was from deeper gears and I wouldn’t have thought a thing about it. So I’m doing the “textbook break-in” on them.

I just got home and decided I’d check the lockers and neither is locking up. I then tried the sway bar and it wouldn’t disconnect either, so I am wondering if it’s the weather.

If I can’t get them to lock up before I change the diff. fluid what do I need to look for. Just trash in the carrier around the locker?

Also, the 4.88 didn’t send up rpms near as much as I expected!

Because the speed sensor can be flashed by the AEV Procal to 4.88 and it’s still deeper gears than 4.1.

RE the brand…AAM 4.88 seems to be missing in action. Neither me, my installer, nor Ron’s couldn’t get our hands on a full set. My installer has always had luck with Yukon gears being strong so I got Yukon on his recommendation.

Anything helpful you can add to the conversation would be appreciated.
