Oil filter question (different part #)

Just did my first oil change (‘18 PW), and the dealer gave me a filter with a different part number than the one that came off of the truck. The original one is on the left ending in -AA and the replacement ends in -AB. I called the dealer and spoke to the parts dept guy that says they are the same filter and rattled off the numbers without even looking them up so seemed pretty credible. Both filters are identical in size, but one just looks bigger in the pic because of the angle. Just thought I’d check if anyone here has found the same or used both. Thanks in advance.

I started using the SRT Filters. Figure it's good enough for 700hp, it's good enough for my pig.

I believe that anytime Mopar makes an improvement to a part (gasket material, check valve, filter media) the superseded part changes by one letter, but the main part number stays the same. Unless there's a major revision which would result in a completely new part number. Also notice the three year difference in the copyright date on your two filters. Your old filter was old inventory.

For example, the T-steering upgrade for my truck is up to "AL" currently and it also started at "AA", but thats after going through a long recall campaign. It's preferred to get the newest part number with all the latest revisions. Maybe thats also an indicator of how flawed the original part was.

Another thing to keep in mind is that as parts go obsolete, sometimes you can search for an older part number and find it. This just happened to me, the current part number ended with "AD" but has been discontinued with no superseded number, but I found an "AC" part that was still available.

Everytime there is a revision on the part. The last letter changes to the next one. The revision could be from a different vendor, a change in the paint, a different material for the gasket, etc.

Thanks for the info guys. I tried searching but every pic and video showed the -AA filter. I figured it was just a newer model or re-design but always good to get some confirmation

one time i bought a bunch of different filters to compare. seems the mopar looked identical to one of the purolators from what i remember. still have them all in a box i think. walmart sells mopars and it seemed like it was slightly different than the dealer version. napas are wix. i use mopar from the dealer only because i never get the cold start ticking with it. early on i remember trying a wix , which im sure are as good as anything but i remember having ticking so i stayed with mopar ever since

Purolator makes many of the Mopar oil filters the Walmart filters are the same as from the dealer.

they were both bought on basically the same day but maybe one was a older version because they werent identical. ive got 2 purolators with same part # for the wagon, that i bought same day from different stores and theyre slightly different as well. the inside metal baffle holes are totally different style
