Dodge Ram Power Wagon Global Production Numbers 2005-2015

Post by PLMCRZY » Mon Apr 25, 2016 9:33 pm

My first post on the PW forum. It took a few weeks to get activated, but I'm in now.

Some may know me from other Mopar sites. I am THE modern Mopar numbers guy. (~1988 and newer) All data pulled and validated from internal sources.
I worked hard cleansing the Power Wagon data, so enjoy. I can drill deeper (color/options/etc...), but would need beer money support! (my direct email address is in the Power Wagon chart image.)

* I added the 2016 and 2017 model years to the charts. 9/5/2017
* I added the 2018, 2019 and 2020 model years to the charts. 4/15/2021

Yes. Also, the ST name got replaced with Tradesman somewhere around '14 or '15 (although almost a moot point).

Very neat info! Its almost unbelievable how rare these rigs really are.

I would like to see how many of those early ones had a manual trans.

So, Rusty, you have 1 of 34 & I have 1 of 70. I wonder how many in the USA had my exact options of: Red-PR4, G-56, Leather/heated seats, engine block heater, tow mirrors, plastic bed liner ?

'09 was the last year for the PW. :poke: at 4Gs.

I'd still like to find out what number my '05 was made during that production year. Had it not been for Dodge's claim back then, that they were sequentially numbered, the thought would of never entered my mind.

To me, none of those marketing ploys mean anything. I don't know a lot about the "sequentially numbered" PWs other than what I have read. Sounds like someone messed up. I'm not aware of any other model trying this angle. Plenty of the "badged" x-of-1000 (or whatever) "numbered" cars. These numbered badges are applied at an outsource shop in RANDOM fashion, so no factory sequence maintained. These gimmicks are basically sales targets, especially when they claim "limited" production. They will always attempt to make as many vehicles as demand. They are in business to make money, not constrain supply.

While we are on the subject of "sequentially numbered", I get asked all the time what the "build number" of a car is. If you have ever seen an assembly plant, cars are spitting out in random fashion like babies in a large hospital (or grass blades out of a lawn mower chute!). Maybe the "first born" or "last born" in a model year has some "trivia" factor, other than that, the build number is meaningless in my opinion. What "baby number" are you?

Cars are members of a model year and I don't get the significance if your car was the "387th" built. Just my opinion of course. :D

Wow, those are shockingly low numbers. Given how many Raptors that were sold, 24K or so with severe limitations on production....Whats the reason or reasons? Lack of marketing? Reliability concerns for the Brand as I have had? Or the lackluster appearance especially cartoon graphics? Other?

Chrysler's niche is low production specialty vehicles. If you look at Chrysler's history, it has always made specialty models. The Power Wagon doesn't really cost more to produce than a 2500 sans the winch and mount. Otherwise all the parts used are off the shelf and do not interrupt the production process.

Will FCA USA keep making the PW? I think so, they sell every unit they make.

I just told my wife we have a collectors item, 1 of around 500.

902614 is the sequential serial number of your VIN. Compared to the numbers made and that number I do not see how just the PW's were sequentially numbered. 615 could have been a diesel and 613 something else. I don't see anyway how they could have been sequentially numbered unless all the 2005 PW's were made at one time. That is highly doubtful.

Anyone have the overall production numbers on the 2500 series trucks? Or know where to find them? I'd be curious how the PW compares to overall totals.

I did a little "research" on this issue. I think I figured out what went down with the 2005 sequentially numbered Power Wagon.

They reserved a block of VINs starting with 5G900001 and assigned VINs from that block to Power Wagon orders only. The block sequence beginning at 5G900001 (through 5G902672) has only Power Wagons builds, but the VINs are not completely contiguous. The minor "holes" I'm sure are canceled orders and such. Again, there are only Power Wagons built after 5G900001.

Also, even though most of the Power Wagon VINs are grouped together, they certainly were not assembled in one mass group. 5G900001 was built on 11/17/2004 and 5G902672 was built on 5/6/2005 (these are not necessarily the first and last PW builds!)

Where they screwed up is when they built the Pilot trucks. There are 53 surviving Pilots that were sold to the general public. Problem is they were assigned from the standard block of VINs for 2005 which began with 5G700001. First Power Wagon pilot was 5G700027 and the last PW pilot sequence was 5G720063. Some of these PW pilots are grouped sequentially, but many examples of "other" trucks having a VIN assigned among the Power Wagon pilots. So the sequential thing does not hold up for the pilots.

Another marketing ploy gone wrong I guess.

Hope this helps.

I'm not surprised by the low numbers. Outside of the Southwest, these trucks are as scarce as hens teeth. Go into a dealership and most of the salesmen know nothing about them. They just think it's another 2500 with a graphics package added to it. That's not so bad, but most of the service techs have never seen one before either.
