Thinking about buying my old PW back.

Post by MustangBOSS9 » Sun Mar 30, 2025 5:31 pm

I sold my 06 Power Wagon a few years ago because I started a business and money was tight. My family and I have kind of always regretted letting it go as we have made many memories travelling and making our own paths in it, but it's gone. I have recently heard that the engine is toast in it and it my need some other interior and rocker repairs. The current owner isn't really able to get it back on the road, so I was thinking about making him an offer. but I'm not sure what these things are worth. They are rare enough running, let alone with bad engines. What do some of you 3rd gen think the value range might be for such a truck? The sentimental value may be worth more than the truck? Thanks for anyone who has any input!

Good morning,,,my $.02,,,a lot depends on how you intend to use it imho,,,mileage it has and past use& known repairs you made while yours are good knowledge to have. I sold Our 2005-“Laramie” PW & had kept her in top shape (235,000 mi) for $11,500, asked $12,500. It buyer w concerned about trans. So dropped price down). Used her a lot( not H/C off road but not pavement princess either). ,,was still my daily driver & good repair. Story is in trucks for sale. In 2020 ( 175,000 mi) replaced engine w remanufactured 5.7 hemi by Jasper. At that point in time $/- 5,500 for enigine & another $3,500 of new non engine related systems,,,u joints, wheel bearings, H2O pump, HD alt., new A/c compressor, F/R actuators, drained, serviced all other fluid systems. About only things that hadn’t been restored was transmission, but she had been meticulously maintained w OEM,,,,becuz they are not “production” models parts & pieces are hard to come by,,,check in w Retired BLM,,,,good source of info as are a lot of the Gen 3-4 members! Good luck,,,,🍀👍🌞

It’s a 20yr old truck with a blown engine & who knows what else is bad. I guess it depends if you’re planning on doing all the work yourself & how much time you have to dedicate to the project. As a gage, I just traded in my ‘14 PW with 50k miles w/ about $20k in mods for about $23k… I’d say maybe $5k-$7k

Drivetrain can be repaired and replaced. Interior can be redone. Lockers maybe an issue. Rust is another story. I traded in my '08 PW because of rust. The tail gate was shot. That's an easy fix with another tail gate. But the 6" x 9" and growing rust hole under the cab, under the driver side seat box area was it. Couple of body shops said between $4K to $7K to fix it. And couldn't guarantee that they could get all of it. So.......I bid good bye to it. My plan was to be buried in that truck. Well....that never worked out.

I paid $7,800 CAD for my 05 PW but since put close to $4,500+ in it just in general repairs and such but if I were to sell it I’d maybe get $9,500 if I’m lucky with 245,000kms and no major rust or issues.

I bought a loaded 2006 PW with seized engine out of NW OK a few years back for $2000. 180k miles, clear coat peeling, drivers seat wear, but the pickup is not beat to death or rusty. I am finally getting around to cannibalizing it, axles and suspension for my '07 G56 Hemi single cab, interior upgrades for my 2009 4500 SLT G56 6.7 work truck. Not sure if I will use the rest, but I will keep it around for parts no doubt.

I can understand the appeal of buying one back that you miss, but the reality of that deal may not be as exciting as the dream. I've had a few I miss, and have had the opportunity to buy one back (2004 diesel Dodge 766whp and everything else upgraded too, it was part of my wedding), but the truck itself doesn't really have a purpose in my life anymore, and it has some rust issues growing, so I passed it up. If your old PW has a useful place in your current life and you are up for the project, make a deal on it. Just don't pay too much. A shop is going to charge the guy close to $8000 for an engine replacement, remember to value your own time when settling on a price.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I'm still considering the truck if the price is right. Not sure if the guy really wants to sell it. If not, I'll just keep my eye out for that regular cab running around.
