PM and prep for moab

Post by jeep_boy02 » Thu Mar 10, 2022 12:07 am

Well I'm finally getting a little free time and the EJS trip is close so I'm doing a bit of preventative maintenance and such.

My (I assume) sunroof drains have been clogged up and every hard rain I get wet spots in the corners of headliner and drips out the A pillar grab handles.

So I dropped headliner, blew em out, ran some water through them(I definitely recommend doing both as the gunk didn't really come out till the water flushed it) and all seems to be better.

I also took out the rear seats and molded the "latch" bracket on back so I can fold them forward now.

The CB hasn't worked in awhile so I ran a mag antenna while the liner was down and wired up a quick connect so I can swap the gmrs between Jeep and PW. But now I gotta order a new radio antenna and base as I drilled out the base and ran my firestik through factory radio antenna location in fender.

Gotta start the install of synergy ball joints and troubleshoot the front locker next. As well as pull the water pump as it seems I've sprank a leak.

What say y'all that have dealt with replacing the WP gasket? Does it look like the case?

I would seal up your cab lights too. That's where mine would leak every now and then. Clear RTV between the gasket and cab. And clear RTV between the lens and the gasket. Then put a little RTV on top of the bolt heads.

I had to change my water pump, it was leaking from the gasket. I used a name brand pump and it started leaking from the gasket again within 2 years. The second time I replaced it with a Mopar pump and no more problems.

Yep, I've got silicone on the cabs and 3rd already. Going to replace those soon with blackouts so they'll have all new housings and seals and I'll probably add some extra sealant then too.

BLM, you think it's more than just the gasket? She does have 136k on her.

Lower BJ isn't budging... upper came out easy enough. Rotors and unit bearing were fully corroded on. Going to have rotors turned but all looks good otherwise. Going to clean up the mating surfaces and antiseize em

Mine was just the gasket leaking both times. The shaft and weep hole were dry. The Mopar gasket/O-ring is a little thicker. It gets flat over time and then starts to leak. At least that was my experience.

Lower ball joint. Crank the hell out out the press. Then start hitting the lower C around the ball joint with a hammer. Keep tension on the press. Spray some BP Blaster around the ball joint too.

Soaked her last night. Going to pick up a mo better BJ tool today and add in an air hammer most likely... what a pain!

Started troubleshooting the locker. It's weird. In the snow a few weeks back driverside wasn't turning, meaning not locked. In the air last night it took a few rotations but did start turning both wheels in same direction.

Wilsonsinak had a similar issue here. Turned out to be small metal chips inhibiting free locker movement. The pictures are gone but the text is still there and the video link still works. Proper function was restored after he cleaned it.

Geeze this lower is just not coming out! Bent ball joint press, heated with Mapp, hammered under pressure, air hammered under pressure, soaked in PB over night, heated with oxy/acty, hammered more under pressure...

It has came out a tad. Basically the thickness of the snap ring, so I thought it's hung on the upper lip that sits above snap ring. Ground that down with carbide bit on rotary air grinder. Still no further. It almost looks from underneath it was pushing out cockeyed but that could be an illusion from the uneven ears cause it sits level on top side where lip meets bore.... so IDK. Looking for beefier press now. Looks like it aint gonna be a quick balljoint job

Holy #$%^&*

Just got that sucker out finally...

Long story short, cut the ball joint out of cup, drilled 1" out of center, sawzall'd a splice in it from top to bottom at cardinal points and collapsed it enough to hammer and punch out....

Got it all done and put her back to work on Sunday.

As usual the run of mill ball joint presses don't have exactly all the adapters you really need. So I had to pound in the uppers with the shallow BJ cup adapter and a 2# sledge... worked easily enough tho but my right arm feels all Popeye like now.

I also found out that those crazy YouTube videos of diy torch plastic renewals actually work! Took my Mapp torch set to about 25-30% and renewed the F outta my flares and headlight lower facias. Didn't work on door handles though.

Alright first day on the road.... F Kansas and it's wind! 6.7 mpg!

The wind also took my trailer license plate, two dust caps on hubs, and the side mirror on the CJ!!!??? Wth all on the driver's side too, kinda crazy.

The license plate literally was ripped off, I still have two triangular pieces with bolts in them where it was mounted.

Other than not good milage the only problem was at the first fuel stop the PW died 3 times in 5 minutes. Only happened while stopped at an idle. No CEL or codes thrown. The next stop it was in my mind so I managed to avoid idling. The third stop I idled for at least 5 mins and it never happened again... ????

Night before leaving... New water pump, fan clutch, belt, etc... locker bypass adjusting, diff covers and service, a bit of wiring...

Had a worse leak with new WP which was done 3 days before leaving so this was all a mad dash thinking I was not going to make the trip since my ordered in WP was defective.

Thanks for the covers RustyImageImageImageImage

Hey rusty did you ever measure the capacity with those covers? I know they ain't high cap but the fill holes are higher so I just put in oem amounts but I've got a gear whine under acceleration going on now. Maybe I was a little short, going to add some today.

They hold the same as oem. If you go by the hole. The front is 3+ qts, and the rear is 6+qts.

Hold same oem filling to the hole!? The hole looks at least 1.5 inches higher... I thought front was around 2.25 and rear was 2.6... hmm
