Lights Out!

Today the truck started reporting "Break light out"... Wow this is cool. Went to the auto store and grabbed a pack of brake light bulbs so I'd be ready to dig in.

Had my helper check the brake lights, and to my surprise they were all working - yet same message on the console. Checked the bed cargo lights, which were working, and it dawned on me that the third brake light should be coming on, and it was out. How refreshing that only a phillips screwdriver is required to pull out the third brake light. Found the bulb had actually blown apart - never saw that before

Of course those bulbs are different in the third brake light than the actual left and right brake lights - so back to the auto store to pick up a Sylvania 921 pair of bulbs! Problem cheaply solved...

My 3rd brake light breaks like that when water gets in there. I figured that out by the stain on my head liner. I just replaced the bulb with an LED bulb from the auto parts store and put some 3M foam gasket around the lens to stop the water infiltration. I guess this is a common Ram problem. Mine is a 2016. FYI- It still gives me the message on the dash sometimes. I think because the LED uses less watts so sometimes it thinks the light is out even when it is working. I may go back to a regular bulb. I hate getting messages/chime on my dash.

Could put a resistor in parallel with the LED, pull more current to clear that fault.
